Almost every human disease involves inflammation in some form or another, so being able to detect inflammation biomarkers in sweat would make it easier to monitor a person's health.

And now we can.

Estrogen plays many important roles in health and fertility, but monitoring its levels in the body requires a patient to have their blood drawn.

A new wearable sweat sensor aims to change that, and can provide the user with real-time monitoring beamed to a smart phone.

The secret to making it work? Synthetic DNA.

Nearly every material, whether it is solid, liquid, or gas, expands when its temperature goes up and contracts when its temperature goes down.

There are a few exceptions, but by and large, materials conform strictly to this principle. There is, however, a class of metal alloys called Invars (think invariable), that stubbornly refuse to change in size and density over a large range of temperatures.

For over 100 years, the source of this unique property has remained a mystery, but now, researchers have finally discovered the mechanism that causes Invars to behave the way that they do.

It's my latest for work.

In their quest to develop a process for 3D printing nanoscale structures, Caltech researchers succeeded, but also discovered something unexpected: The things they printed were coming out stronger than they should have been.

Now they know why.

Most medications have side effects because they are active throughout the body -- not just where they are needed.

New research aims to change that by creating a drug delivery system that activates medication only in targeted areas using ultrasound and microscopic protein capsules derived from bacteria.

I hear there's a photoshop going around of a cybertruck with faux woodgrain paneling on the sides, so this seems like a good time to remind people of this photoshop I did a couple of years ago.

Does anyone out there know what this connector is?

I don't think it's proprietary because none of the other ones are proprietary, but I don't know what to search for.

It's on an e-bike.

I got the mostly-salvaged-river-parts e-bike, aka E-xpand-o-bike, into enough shape this afternoon to take it on a ride around the block.

I still need to fabricate a mount for the battery and the controller and do all the cable routing, but it works!

And it looks peak mad scientist on meth right now, so I had to show a picture to the Fediverse.

Five years after giving humanity its first glimpse of a black hole, the astronomy team responsible is back with a new image of M87*

The new image, made with new data, helps confirm the team's original findings and serves as additional evidence for the validity of the theory of relativity.

"Jellyfish can't do much besides swim, sting, eat, and breed. They don't even have brains. Yet, these simple creatures can easily journey to the depths of the oceans in a way that humans, despite all our sophistication, cannot.

But what if humans could have jellyfish explore the oceans on our behalf, reporting back what they find? New research conducted at Caltech aims to make that a reality through the creation of what researchers call biohybrid robotic jellyfish."

I just found one of the outdoor ants on my arm after I came in from outside. She was looking pretty lost, so I took her to the back yard where I know many of her compatriots have well-established paths and set her down on the path.

She ran around in complete confusion for a few seconds and every ant she encountered seemed to sniff her to scope her out.

But after a few encounters with her sisters, she looked like she got her bearings and went running along the path with the rest of them.

My brother left some drops of water on the leaves of one of his house plants that he left outside overnight and now these marks are permanently part of the leaves.

I asked him if the sun caused it, but he assured me that the plant was only outside overnight. The marks have been on the leaves for a year now

Both grass and ants had barely started to evolve by the Cretaceous period, when dinosaurs were at their peak.

A world without grass or ants means that the dinosaurs never got to have an authentic picnic experience.
