Malgas,

written by Lewis Carroll of all people

I mean, he was a mathematician and a poet. Is it really that surprising he wrote a poem about math?

Malgas,

Yeah, she wasn’t even in the photo that went viral. It was of the dress hanging in a shop.

Malgas,

think it’s interesting, for example, that “handicapped” has become a slur in my lifetime

Hell, my mom used to work for an organization called ARC. When I was little it stood for “Association for Retarded Citizens”. The organization still exists, but stopped being an acronym in the '90s.

Malgas,

I think it’s What Do People Do All Day? by Richard Scarry.

Malgas,

The Oxford comma is bad. The “and” conveys the end of the list just fine.

"We invited the strippers, JFK, and Stalin.": a guest list with three items.

"We invited the strippers, JFK and Stalin.": JFK and Stalin are the strippers.

Malgas,

Definitely wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for simplicity though!

Or short install times. Compiling KDE takes forever. Or at least it did back when I used SourceMage, years and years ago.

Malgas,

Depending on the version of TC, a wooden part may cause the tool to regenerate durability anyway.

Of course, you'd still be better off using wood for the handle or binding and something else for the head…

Malgas,

I'm almost certain I've seen a woodworking community when browsing all.

I also don't think it's necessarily a question of subject matter so much as that Lemmy's user base is simply not large enough yet to sustain active niche communities, and it's an open question if we can get to that point without degrading the quality of the less focused ones, like /c/crafting or /c/diy.

Malgas,

Also, weirdly, a lot of people seem to use Discord for things used to be (and I would say should) be on a forum (or community, magazine, etc.)

Trying to follow the thread of a discussion about some obscure point you're interested in is much easier when it's in a thread, instead of an undifferentiated chat log with a bunch of unrelated cross-talk.

Malgas,

Untitled Goos Game - What's that goo? Do you really want to know? Well you're gonna find out, and several others as well.

Malgas,

This analysis has an inconsistency regarding pie:

A slice of pumpkin pie is listed as toast (starch on one side), but a slice of double-crusted pie is a taco (three sides), a whole key lime pie is a quiche (five sides), and a whole double-crusted pie is a calzone (six sides).

In all cases save one, side crust is seen as distinct from bottom crust. A slice of pumpkin pie therefore has starch on two sides, making it a sandwich.

Malgas,

Everything changed when the firemelon attacked.

Malgas,

Do they have any idea how little that narrows it down?

Malgas,

This is pretty obvious, since you can easily count from one member to the next.

I'd just like to chip in that it isn't necessary for a countably infinite set to have an obvious method of counting. Listing all of the rationals in numerical order isn't possible (what's the smallest fraction above 0?) but it is nevertheless possible to create a bijection with the naturals.

Malgas,

To me, the real benefit of growth is the ability to have active communities focused on niche topics, like discussion of a single book series rather than a genre or books in general.

I don't know if it's possible get there without creating an Eternal September situation in the broader communities, but it would be nice if we could.
