I was also, initially, a little bit confused with how this was being framed. I understand now having read it more closely, but on first reading of the line “The idea is to provide one more alternative – beside the Tor Network – to browse the internet with more privacy” because of the word “alternative” I thought you were suggesting it as a replacement for Tor.
I sometimes post news articles that examine possible problems in society. Some may agree with the author, some may disagree. I often see these posts being downvoted if many disagree with the author....
I’m not familiar exactly with your posts, but I wouldn’t necessarily assume the downvotes are for the reasons you think they are. Sometimes I’ll downvote a post because I don’t think it’s relevant to the topic or that it’s simply not interesting (and I really do view it merely as a vote, nothing personal). Then the OP will sometimes respond with “I can’t believe I was downvoted because of x, y, z” where x, y, z really had nothing to do with the downvote. If I disagree, I try to upvote because it’s on-topic and reply with my disagreement (which I have just done right now).
This whole “Nessie” thing counts as mildly infuriating to me at this point. The whole loch ness monster thing was a fun thing to wonder about as child, but are people really taking it “seriously?” I’m not even sure if this article was written as a serious news story or not, it’s certainly light on substantial new evidence, but then it’s a BBC article not presented as satire - are we supposed to all be in on the tired joke or is there really something new and substantial there?
Sure but Loch Ness is on the 3rd most populated island in the world, it’s comprehensively explored, there’s nothing newsworthy to say about it unless there was a vast oversight and that would be the head line, not the “monster”.
I only have a phone due to social pressure, it’s only an absolute last resort for me. Desktop/laptop, where I can actually see everything and have a proper keyboard and shortcuts, all the way. I’m told I’m a dying breed but it amazes me how so many people can stand to use their phone as much as they do, because to me it’s infuriating.
Just as a separate follow-up comment (if you’ll excuse the double posting): I’m surprised the response here has been generally so anti-smartphone so far, given that the mass-migration from Reddit to KBin/Lemmy has been characterised as a reaction to Reddit killing mobile apps.
Same, yes, for me it just woke me up to how the quality of Reddit had been declining over the previous few years. It was like a boiling frog until then. I think the spez AMA was ultimately the final straw since it showed he just didn’t care about users or improving anything.
It’s the same concerns that get repeated over and over again, given how incredibly important Mozilla is and the good they do, giving undue weight to its flaws is unhelpful.
Not to say you can’t mention them, just avoid undue weight. Back on Reddit r/firefox turned in to a massive anti-Mozilla circlejerk which is the last thing we need when it’s so important to encourage people to use Firefox.

It does go to show the necessity of adblocking software though. It’s not just a trivial convenience at the expense of sites’ ad-revenue, it’s necessary for online safety.
It was ~20 years ago so my advice to myself then would be pretty irrelevant now. I messed up my laptop, and my advice then would have been don’t start with a laptop (because laptop compatibility was lacking back then compared to desktop, different times).
By “established” what I really mean is it’s already gone through the difficult part (i.e. while it’s not dominant I think it’s passed most of the hurdles that most attempted platforms have failed at). If something’s going to do better than Mastodon, it’s going to have to have something that people want that Mastodon doesn’t have, which I’m not seeing here, but maybe I’m wrong.
Does it even have a web version? It doesn’t seem to be available for my Linux distro of choice, jumping through hoops to install some proprietary app would make it a massive fail.

Observers on a boat using acoustic equipment reported four unidentified “gloops” but then realised their recording device wasn’t plugged in.
OC Do you use a desktop, phone, or both?
I am curious how many people do not use desktops in this day and age. I do not. I use my phone for everything (online) tech related in my life....

I start: the most important thing is not the desktop, it’s the package manager.
