Mane25,

Hate to be stupid but where’s the animation?

Mane25,

OK, I would say “thanks” normally but that doesn’t seem to quite fit. :P

Mane25,

What’s wrong with Mastodon? It’s already established.

Mane25, (edited )

GNOME and KDE both have a built-in nightlight feature (reducing blue light after a certain time). Not seen one that will turn the screen greyscale myself.

Edit- Actually I think I’ve found exactly what you’re asking for: fostips.com/gnome-bedtime-androids-bedtime-mode-l…

Mane25,

Well the different car is free though?

Mane25,

The “if you don’t value your time” argument applied 20 years ago. These days it’s mostly plug-and-play for typical users, you spend far less time troubleshooting than you would dealing this type of BS like OP does. My time is too valuable to be using Windows even if it has some advantages.

Mane25,

Assuming compatible hardware, what kind of problem would you hit that would be easier to troubleshoot in Windows?

Mane25,

I’m going to go against the grain and say I don’t like them - I think they can reduce quality of discussion (i.e., encouraging laziness, much easier to hit the down button than explain to someone why they’re wrong and risk getting downvoted yourself).

If we have them though I think you should be able to see who gave them out, the facelessness of it is the biggest problem.

Mane25,

You’ve just reminded me of something that used to happen around 20 years ago on smaller forums which is “forum affiliates”, where two or more forums with overlapping discussion interests would simply agree to link to each other to drive traffic.

I’m not sure how common that ever was or if it just happened with the types of forums I would visit, but it worked and there’s nothing really similar in the Fediverse. Normally as a rule I tend towards the “stay separate” camp for communities - but something to boost visibility of related communities might at least help with the perceived drawbacks.

Mane25,

According to my memory web rings were a bit earlier than the time-frame I’m talking about, but similar thing.

Mane25,

Never heard of a box cutter.

Mane25,

I’ve always called it a Stanley knife, I guess I’ve never come across the generic name.

I have one.

Mane25,

Thanks for your feedback, please follow my blog for more posts like this.

Mane25,

I’m a fan of darker shades on flags, I’d say it’s best to pick colours a touch deeper than you’d think when designing a flag. It stands out better when flying against the daytime sky.

Mane25,

I don’t think anyone is offended or “getting all triggered” (projection, maybe?), I think OP is annoyed that the community isn’t properly moderated (and I share that annoyance). Moderator action only became “oppressive” when we had centralised social media; in the old days of forums if you didn’t like the moderators you just made your own forum, you’d complain about the old moderators but to complain about “oppression” would be laughable because they can have their website and you can have yours. Thankfully both OP and I have that option - if what the people here want is low-quality off-topic crap then that’s what they can have, I could make my own mildly infuriating if I cared enough, and if others wanted they could go there - it’s totally democratic.

Mane25,

It’s not bread, there’s no bread in that picture.

Why do people still recommend Thinkpads for Linux when there are Linux-oriented manufacturers now?

I’ve noticed in the Linux community whenever someone asks for a recommendation on a laptop that runs Linux the answer is always “Get a Thinkpad” yet Lenovo doesn’t seem to be a big Linux contributor or ally. There’s also at least six Linux/FOSS-oriented computer manufacturers now:...

Mane25,

First of all I wouldn’t use a pre-installed OS (I would always wipe and install my own for security reasons).

Secondly: Thinkpads (at least when I bought mine, last year) let you buy them without an OS and don’t charge you for it.

Thirdly: the linked manufacturers above tend to be either US-centric and/or more expensive than Thinkpads.

Mane25,

In English we call it “Marshmallow”.

Mane25,

Now you have me curious since this is the second language, why bacon?

Mane25,

How can it be abused and to what end? You can go to any (instanceurl)/instances to see what it’s federated to.

Mane25,

Only works with Lemmy instances I think, I’m not sure what the technical reasons are.

Mane25,

Actually you’re right and kbin.social works as well, I should have checked.

Mane25,

I think it has mostly friendly and mature discussion there. I’d have my account there if they federated more, but that’s my choice as it is theirs.

Mane25,

I think it’s probably the most important piece of information to have when choosing a server.

While a lot of people have said “it can be used for harassment”, I’ve not seen any information yet on how that could be. On the contrary, I think being open and up-front about federation policies is important for a healthy community - it avoids arguments about going behind people’s backs.
