How would you explain the need for three writing systems in Japanese to a person who only has had experience with one?

As an English speaking person who recently got into learning Japanese, I was intrigued by the use of the three writing systems: Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana, however I could not truly understand why it is that way. Just a learner of Japanese here. Japanese is difficult to read if written purely phonetically because there are a lot of homophones (words that sound the same with different meanings).

So typically kanji carries the root of words and kana is for all the grammatical parts, loan-words, and everything else. Hiragana/katakana duplicate each other but are no more redundant than lower/upper case.

Speaking as a learner, sometimes it’s easier to learn the kanji than the sound of the word so sometimes it can make learning to read easier.

Of course, yes, and that’s why I’m not much of an advocate for English spelling reform. Japanese has particularly a lot of them.

The annoying thing for me is someone posting a question, getting help from the community, and then immediately deleting all their posts assuring that nobody can ever be helped by it again. This is kind of a reverse of that which I would say is probably less common?

What’s so bad about that? Even on Lemmy I’m posting things in public, intended to be read by the public, and if somebody wants to train AI on what I’ve given to the public then good for them. I refuse to use a walled garden. Being proprietorial about online posts is probably not the most effective response to online surveillance. I agree that Huffman is a douchecanoe though.

I view it like open source where commercial and non-commercial are on an even playing-field, what matters is their contribution. The freedom afforded by a healthy open-source ecosystem should mitigate negative commercial interests, it doesn’t always work out like that but that’s the kind of thing I would hope for.

There are actually extremely valuable contributions to open source from commercial entities.

There was nothing in the post indicating what app this was and “Remind” is a generic enough word, even if upper-cased, to make the service not obvious. It could be a porn-site for what we know, in which case that date should naturally be rejected.

Why would we attack the author? That seems like an oddly specific request that makes me oddly suspicious of the author, if anything.

Yes, I was kind of being rhetorical there, I thought that would be enough to draw attention to what’s going on. Also a new Lemmy account that exclusively links to one unknown website is a big red flag.

Twitter in the old days and Mastodon now I treat as custom news feeds, you subscribe to people or entities you’re interested in hearing news from and there you have it. I find it much less useful as a platform for having discussions or browsing for pleasure than Reddit in the old days and Lemmy now, which as you say is topic-focused rather than individual focused.

How do you even start with breaking up with your gmail?

I have this bad feeling daily that for whatever reason I loose access to my gmail. Don’t think of anything shady but simply I just loose it. There is a very small chance to it but still. I frequently encounter people asking about moving from Gmail but I never understand, please help me understand if I’m wrong. Doesn’t Gmail still let you forward emails to a 3rd party address? In which case just sign up for another email service and you’re done. Email is a standard, not a service. I’ve changed email addresses probably about as many times as years I’ve been alive, it’s probably the least likely service I could think of that you could be tied in to. Am I missing something huge here?

Well yes, you move the accounts across to your new provider when you come across them or sign up for new ones (I presumed the problem was that you had so many accounts that you’d forgotten them, and for some reason you needed some legacy information from them). If a few inactive accounts die then no big deal surely, you sign up for new ones?

Absolutely, I post much more here because I know actual people will actually read it and may actually respond like they would to an actual human. It’s like the old days of the internet.

None of that is particularly the thing that worries me - Meta could be crawling Lemmy right now and getting all that information even if they weren’t planning on supporting federation, but it’s on the public web intentionally to be read, so it’s just like anyone else reading it. The only piece of information I’m surprised would get shared is IP address, and without knowing the technical reasons I’m wondering how/why they would get this and if it’s something Lemmy could fix in software.

The main thing that worries me is still if the toxic culture of Meta’s social networks floods into our communities.

Nothing is federated to Threads, they haven’t switched it on yet.

Sure, I wish them nothing but failure, but I’m intending to wait around and see what happens first. From what I’ve heard Threads isn’t going well for them anyway. I still worry that even if there’s mass defederation it would still poison the pool, because it would influence the culture of instances that are federated with it and isolate those that aren’t.

It’s always been a pet peeve of mine when TLDs get used for something other than their purpose. I get that countries have benefited from it, but that’s random chance and not what the system was set up for. I know this is a small thing to get annoyed about (so don’t take me too seriously) but if it were up to me, .ai domains should have to prove their connection to Anguilla.

That particular jurisdiction exists pretty unethically as well, which somewhat puts me off sites that use it.

The British Indian Ocean Territory was formed specifically to prevent the native inhabitants from gaining self-determination, allowing for a joint UK/US military base to be set up. The inhabitants were forcibly expelled in the 1960s, and ever since then the British government have taken active, sometimes deceptive, measures to prevent them from ever returning. You should look it up.

Yep, the strict marine reserve. But it doesn’t stop the military base from pumping sewage into it, and it doesn’t stop rich people with yachts from going there. Just normal people and Chagos islanders aren’t allowed. Also a difficult thing to note is that this was during a Labour government (which many liberal-minded British people consider a lesser of two evils). The only major politician who intended to do right there was Jeremy Corbyn, but he was slaughtered by the media for being not evil enough.
