If you're making software for actual end-users, you HAVE to give it a goddamn GUI, or else you suck, your software sucks, and nobody is going to use your damn software.

You see this shit SO much more often than you would think. And the infuriating thing is, it seems to be most common among programs that are INCREDIBLY complex and sophisticated....

MicrowavedTea,

True a UI doesn’t have to be pretty but it has to be usable/provide a good experience. To me at least a bad GUI is much worse than a terminal interface. Which is also a UI, just not graphical. I don’t write desktop apps with GUIs so I’m not sure how complex it is but it probably depends a lot on the language. If the initial project is using C for example I’d expect adding a GUI to be more of a pain than if it was written in Visual Basic.

MicrowavedTea,

I feel that’s more of an unpopular opinion than the original post. I absolutely care about the size of a program, especially if there is no reason for that size.

MicrowavedTea,

Fair enough there is a reason but you’re still trading ease of development for the dev with something on the side of the end user, who might not consider it a good tradeoff. I haven’t filled my hard drive with games and movies, I’ve filled it with programs that bundle a bunch of libraries for things I may not use. A user won’t say that the program makes up for functionality by being small but they may not install it at all if it’s too big (which I’ve definitely done).

You’re right it’s about priorities but I don’t think ignoring size and loading times is a tradeoff most people would accept.

MicrowavedTea,

Not exactly a long line but super slow. It was for a university examination where we just answered some questions about a project we did through the semester, so it shouldn’t have taken this long. They didn’t have a good place to host this so we were about 100 people waiting in 2 hallways without any chairs. We were split into groups based on our student id number. There was a general disorganization but our group seemed particularly slow. I think my initial time of examination was 6pm. I went second to last in my group and ended up leaving at 9:15. The university officially closes at 9. There were actually people who had assigned times in the morning and had to wait longer so it turns out I wasn’t that unlucky.

MicrowavedTea,

If you exclude the progressively smaller furniture I think I’ve been to some IKEAs that felt like this.

MicrowavedTea,

Maybe because you hear your voice every time you speak but rarely in recordings so the difference is more jarring. Most people don’t spend all day looking at a mirror but probably see photos of themselves more often than they hear recordings.

MicrowavedTea,

I’ve chipped part of my teeth at least twice bringing a bottle to my mouth. At this point I’ve accepted the sides of my front teeth will always look a bit messed up.

MicrowavedTea,

I say that too then never follow it. In my defence it’s usually a beer bottle

MicrowavedTea,

Cables are already pretty cheap without being of super questionable quality. I wouldn’t risk my electronics trying out a cable I thought was fake.

MicrowavedTea,

That probably depends on your use case. But also what level are you on those other languages? How many do you think you can learn at the same time?

MicrowavedTea,

As a general suggestion then, for something easy I’d go for a Scandinavian language (Danish, Norwegian or Swedish). You only need one of them to kinda understand the others. For something harder Finnish or Estonian is interesting because of the many noun cases but not very useful. I don’t know anything about Asian languages but Korean and Japanese would be next on my list.

MicrowavedTea,

I’ve been learning Norwegian on and off for some time now. What I always found interesting is how much I can understand from written Swedish and Danish (+ Nynorsk) while still having difficulty with even basic spoken Norwegian if it isn’t the most common Oslo accent.

MicrowavedTea,

That’s some perfect timing as I came across Kongen Befaler like three days ago. It seems the reddit links also have subtitles which is really useful, thanks. And yeah I’ve also noticed a lot of actors and singers seem to have a more western accent. Duolingo definitely doesn’t prepare you for that.

MicrowavedTea,

I like most songs by Carla’s Dreams (Romanian/Moldovan + Russian). From eurovision, Shum (Ukrainian) and My sister’s crown (English+Ukrainian+Czech+Bulgarian) are pretty good. Slavic languages just sound nice in songs.

Also most pop in catalan (eg. La sortida, escriurem, Ara!).

For something rarer check out Pat Boy who sings in Mayan.

MicrowavedTea,

Not sure if this applies to the US but for most things you buy from a supermarket the generic supermarket brand is usually just as good or even better than the big brands. And it’s usually much cheaper.

MicrowavedTea,

Adult second hand clothes are fine too even if you’ll wear them longer than a child. There are many people who give away clothes in perfect state just because they don’t wear them as much. I’ve had similar luck with brand new 40€ jeans and second hand 5€ jeans.

MicrowavedTea,

Until this article I thought you could swap eSIMs between phones, exactly like normal ones

MicrowavedTea,

Eh that’s not really the same. And reading this thread it seems many providers (including mine) don’t support online QR codes.

MicrowavedTea,

Not the person you asked but I have a couple of sims by different providers that I swap between phones/sim routers when I need to make calls or use data from that carrier. Popping the sim into an old device and configuring whatever I need is super convenient.

MicrowavedTea,

But I don’t necessarily want to use my main phone as a hotspot.

MicrowavedTea,

Maybe about a year ago. It was an actual offer from a site I knew already and was too lazy to go and check it manually. Never making that mistake again as for months afterwards every ad I got was from this site. I now use adblock on my phone as well so I don’t see anything but I bet I’d still get ads from that site if I didn’t.

MicrowavedTea,

With a quick search it seems to be a translation specifically targeting Android 8.0 (API 26) but I only see it in the TBLauncher project. Some small details here but not sure why there is a separate translation for it github.com/TBog/TBLauncher/issues/90.

MicrowavedTea,

I’ve also had problems with Firefox on mobile. For some reason it’s just very heavy on my phone, slower than chromium and has frozen android twice. I go back to it every now and then to see if it’s changed but until then there are many browsers that support ad blockers. Kiwi works great for me

MicrowavedTea,

The best that comes to mind is Crimes of the Future. There are people growing new organs and altering their digestive system to eat plastic.

The book Borne was supposed to get a movie or TV show adaptation at some point. I really hope they make this well cause that’s one of the best examples in my opinion.

MicrowavedTea,

Interesting, so blinking yellow obviously means the same everywhere but where these are placed varies a lot. In Greece I’ve never seen green for both cars and pedestrians either, but there are many cases where pedestrians get green and cars yellow for the same part of road (usually when cars turn right at intersections). From the answers I take it the original comment probably meant cars turning into the path of other cars, not people, which sounds a bit better.
