MrMusAddict,

From what I recall from one of their Directs, Digital Foundry corroborated another outlet’s finding that ultra settings (and I think specifically ultra shadows) are unoptimized. Tons of weird frame time jittering, and like a 15% drop in FPS compared to AMD. So, if you have shadows turned to High or lower, that’ll explain it. Otherwise, what they’re saying is an AMD equivalent would be getting 70-80 fps in your case.

MrMusAddict,

I finally broke the shackles of Baldurs Gate 3, and now I’m playing… Split screen Baldurs Gate 3 with my wife! It’s genuinely just so good…

MrMusAddict,

On Reddit, I was mainly subscribed to a few niche subreddits. By reddit’s standards, that’s still like 100k subscribers. But over here, even though there might be 1000 people subscribed to those same niche communities, the 90-9-1 rule still applies. Either the community has one super-spammy power user trying to boost life into the community, or there’s just no one actually posting anything.

I’m getting enough of a fix to stay on Lemmy and wade out the peace and quiet, but I do long for the engagement of 50k+ users on a truly niche topic. My willingness to stay on Lemmy has been helped by me starting to re-utilize off-site forums specifically to those niches. But I can totally understand how it just feels dead to a lot of the Reddit exodus.

MrMusAddict,

The traditionalist in me absolutely hates the idea of having weighted randomness to the output of quality - I would much prefer a guarantee of quality.

The engineer in me loves the idea of creating a mini factory that recycles low quality parts to create higher quality parts, and abstracting it to essentially give me a guarantee of quality.

On the fence, but leaning towards approving of the idea.

MrMusAddict,

I mean, I’m not going to ask you to doxx yourself, but I’m extremely curious to know where you’re seeing these homes that are, as you describe them, like 150 SqFt of livable area (10x10 studio + 5x8 bathroom) with an attached 3 car garage.

Edit: And to clarify, the 1500 was pulled out of an anecdotal average. My observations while shopping for homes here in the US have been; 2 bed / 1 bath, could be as small as 800 SqFt, but it’s cramped. Whereas in middle-class suburbia, it’s not uncommon to see 2500+ SqFt homes.

MrMusAddict,

Wow, what an awe-inspiring counter-example, lol

MrMusAddict,

Excellent point. The initial intent of my squabble wasn’t trying to deny that counter-examples exist, just that when comparing 100 houses to 100 apartments, that there seemed to be losses in living space for the apartment (law of averages and whatnot).

I had made another comment on that /c/FuckCars thread that calculated that if all of the homes had 1-car garages (which is not uncommon for a lot of dense low-density suburbs), then the homes would be 1740 SqFt with the garage / 1500 SqFt Livable, and the apartments would be 1009 SqFt livable. So a 33% loss of livable space in the image with what I would consider a reasonable assumption.

MrMusAddict,

Assuming the needs of a living space is the same across both populations, this graphic seems disingenuous. The pixel count of the apartment suggests it could fit 6½ of the homes per floor. Across 9 floors that’s 58 homes worth of square footage.

I assume the homes have garages, which would not account for living space. But garages don’t account for 42% of a homes’ size.

MrMusAddict,

For that to be true, you’d have a 2-car garage attached to at most 400 SqFt of living space…

Or in other words, for a home with a reasonable 1500 SqFt of living space, you’d need at least an 8 car garage…

MrMusAddict,

Then you’d be closer to genuine compared to what this graphic shows.

MrMusAddict,

True, but what I’m saying is that there are losses in livable square footage represented in the apartment. A home’s SqFt excludes the garage, so a 1500 SqFt home is actually 1740 SqFt with a 1-car garage. I.e. a 1-car garage only takes up 14% of the area underneath a roof of a 1500 Livable-SqFt house. Yet, the represented apartment has lost 42%.

That implies that if the the houses in the picture are 1500 livable square feet, then the apartments are 1009 livable square feet; a ⅓ loss in livable area.

Apartment Complex = 58 Homes' worth of area including garage (1,740 × 58 = 100,920 SqFt)
100,920 / 100 apartments = 1,009 SqFt per apartment

MrMusAddict,

One thing I can say so far after a few hours is that their advertising department and Inon Zur did a masterful job capturing a whimsical aesthetic that nostalgically reminds me of some educational TV space shows like Cosmos.

Now that I’m playing the game, it feels significantly more clunky than that, and I haven’t gotten as immersed into that aesthetic as I had hoped. Really just FEELS like Fallout in space so far, which is a bit disappointing.

There’s also significantly more load screens than I had hoped. I’ve been spoiled by No Man’s Sky, thought we’d be getting some seamless transitions to planets and cities. Seems bizarre that we just fast travel through the starmap.

MrMusAddict,

I can attest that my comment was made in isolation. I intentionally didn’t look at conversations or reviews and wanted a fresh experience all to myself. So I’m not parroting or trying to push some negative narrative.

Now that I’ve slept on it, I’m going to dive back in with my expectations reduced, and I’m hoping I’ll have lots of fun with it.

MrMusAddict,

The reduction in save file size is appreciated, but unfortunately it appears to be rather minimal. Just tested it on a couple of saves - after loading an existing file and immediately savings, looks like it went down from

 • End of Act 2 = 12.1MiB → 11.3MiB
 • Middle of Act 3 = 30.8MiB → 29.8MiB

So, only a 1MiB reduction it seems… So, still need to manage like 15 GiB of save files, lol

MrMusAddict,

Eh, yes and no. It seems to be roughly a 5% reduction in size. So that means that you’re only getting 1 extra save every 20. I was hoping for it to closer to halved, or more.

MrMusAddict,

Disqualifying a candidate is the intended legal protection. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that will ever be used effectively if it’s not done to Trump.

MrMusAddict,

Rioting will come and go. Assuming a disqualification is recognized by enough people, then the noise makers will go back into the woodwork for a time.

There’s a lot of misguided people out there who would vote for Trump if he was on a ballot but would not start a civil war if he was not.

I feel like it’s true to say that we are the closest we’ve been to a civil war since the last, but that doesn’t mean that the risk of civil war is high.

Is there a master list somewhere of compatible parts for the Inventor Hub (I think the same as Technic Large Hub 88016)

I bought my son a Mindstorms Inventor set back in like February 2021 thinking we’d be able to buy cool expansions for like at least a decade. But, he was a little too young both to build and program, so it’s collected dust since then....

MrMusAddict,

Funny enough, I’ve been looking into supporting my local retro game store after I found out that a PS1 was $70 on their shelf, and most PS1 games were under $10.

The only thing holding me back has been the god-awful ergonomics of the original controllers. So the thought of using my PS5 controller has re-piqued my interest.

MrMusAddict,

the company says its connection is lag-free.

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/e1ad1166-2c07-42ba-a66d-c11770dac8e3.jpeg

But seriously, this is awesome! I’ve wanted to go grab a PS1, but I definitely don’t need another controller on my coffee table (especially a wired one).

MrMusAddict,

I’ve had the original Pixel, the Pixel 4a 5G, and the Pixel 7a.

The only reason I ditched my 4a 5G was because my cell service seemed to be degrading (which was odd, because it was 5g).

Now that I have the 7a, I can honestly say I’m disappointed in its battery life. My 4a 5G could last 36 hours on a charge, even 3 years into ownership. My 7a seems to get down to 15% consistently by the time I get to bed each day.

MrMusAddict,

Definitely ironic to me that there’s so much fear about EV batteries spontaneously combusting. And in the end, one of the largest recalls for spontaneous combustion is from an oil regulator in an ICEV 😅
