The ugly truth behind ChatGPT: AI is guzzling resources at planet-eating rates (www.theguardian.com)

Despite its name, the infrastructure used by the “cloud” accounts for more global greenhouse emissions than commercial flights. In 2018, for instance, the 5bn YouTube hits for the viral song Despacito used the same amount of energy it would take to heat 40,000 US homes annually....

Orvanis,

Here “consume” means far more than just “drank”. If you take a shower at home, you are consuming water. Wash your car? Consume water. Water your garden? Consume water.

Orvanis,

To be fair AI models are being replaced multiple times a year these days… So yeah, in 2 years it should be killed, because improved models should exist.

Xbox's biggest crisis right now isn't games. It's hardware. (Opinion - Jez Corden) (www.windowscentral.com)

"Today, PlayStation revealed that its PS5 has sold 40 million units. Microsoft doesn’t share hardware numbers typically, but court documents, math, and slides from an ID@Xbox in Brazil seem to suggest the Xbox Series X|S line-up is around 20-23 million units sold globally. That essentially puts the PS5 at a 2:1 advantage...

Orvanis,

Exactly. Microsoft also has the benefit of double-dipping - they have Xbox, but they also get a healthy cut from PC as a vast majority of gamers are going to be running Windows.

This article feels very much like a fanboy wanting to keep the stupid “console wars” going, when really Microsoft is happy to just rake in the cash.

Orvanis,

Summed up: convenience, and curiosity.

I can lay in bed and ask if to turn off the lights, and all lights in the house shut off (including the ones the kids forgot to turn off). That convenience is phenomenal.

And my kids who are too young to own their own devices can ask it questions. Whatever is on their random little minds, which very frequently leads them to a topic that they then come to us to discuss in depth. I love that it helps them foster their curiosity about the world around them and often enough leads to healthy conversations with Mom or Dad.

Orvanis,

Usually by the second or third question they got as much out of Google Assistant as they are going to get (because they just keep asking variations of the same thing, but don’t quite grasp that it is really the same question, or they have now gotten to a hyper specific question). By question 5 or 6 they typically are done with Google and come to us to discuss further.

Orvanis,

By all accounts the past couple seasons he just shows up drunk to record his lines, be obnoxious in the office for a couple hours and then go home.

The actual writing and content hasn’t really involved him. So assuming they can find a voice that isn’t too jarring, odds are the average person won’t know or care and the show will be just fine.

Orvanis,

I bet Disney loves having Bluey and Bingo right next to fuck spez and My Little Porno.

Miyamoto wonders why Pikmin hasn't sold more and why people think the games are difficult (nintendoeverything.com)

Seems like time and time again, Nintendo is always trying to sell games to an audience of people who do not wish to play video games. For a sequel, I figured Nintendo should focus on their core audience of Pikmin fans but it seems like they’re always changing things to appeal to people who don’t play games while in return...

Orvanis,

I absolutely loved the Pkimin 4 Demo. Having played all 3 prior games, 4 resonated better with more emphasis on exploration and removing the “you have X days” pressure. Made it far more enjoyable personally.

The only thing I really wish they hadn’t eliminated was proper co-op. My son was very disappointed that all I could do was throw rocks and items rather than run around the world with him.

Orvanis,

Technically Pikmin 3 also didn’t have co-op when it first released, that was a feature added with Pikmin 3 Deluxe. However definitely extremely disappointed they removed it for 4. Maybe it can be added later, but likely not until they release DLC or another Deluxe version…

Orvanis,

One of the few games I’ve Platinum’d. It was exceptionally fun to play, with a huge variety of movement, and I desperately wish they would make it into a full blown sequel.

Orvanis,

Oh boy, between the writers strike and actors strike we are in for a year of reality shows being shoved out the door…

Orvanis,

AirBNB is only good if it is an extremely unique/convenient location and there are no hotels reasonably nearby. Otherwise Hotel absolutely > AirBNB

Orvanis,

The article lists an awfully long laundry list of things the funding will go towards, including adding battery storage to the grid.

Is $21 million (15m federal, article says about 6m from state funds) anywhere close to realistic…? Or is this like “1 battery here, check that off the list, bury these 3 cables here and check that off the list…”

Orvanis,

In all seriousness, is the Dev using the build date as the version number…? July 8th, 2023 at 12:34am - vYY.MM.DD-HH.mm

Unusual approach for sure as you have no clue if it is a major version change or minor bug fixes.

Orvanis,

Thank you for the web link, TIL it is much more common than I was aware!

Orvanis,

Tried it with 5 adults around me, 5 for 5 it was accurate. Most that agreed it was art had the stipulation that it looked like Children’s art, but that still was technically art even if they didn’t think it required much skill.

Orvanis,

This is insanely cool… I don’t know why it never occurred to me that bots on other platforms could work here due to federation, but it makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing!

Orvanis,

"Probably half of our football team comes from Minnesota, so that’s kind of a big deal to us,” College of Science President Rod Flanigan said.

Ahhh yes, the reason for the College of Science to exist… Sports. Honestly proud of my state for the changes they have been making, I hope the momentum keeps going.

Orvanis,

I would check out the Genki Covert Dock. It is a game changer when bringing the switch outside the house, but absolutely could be plugged in most of the time at home.

Its a wonderful grab and go dock, and they extensively tested switch compatibility - have had zero issues with mine.

Orvanis,

Not shocked that the FAST model has unpredictable revenue downturns. But I was surprised to read that Plex has roughly 175 employees - that seems way, way higher than I would have expected.

Orvanis,

This is fantastic... Was the color pallet a part of your prompt? They all seem to have tones of red and translucency to them.

Orvanis,

Thank you for sharing! Just getting into AI images, and the prompt crafting has been a steeper learning curve than I had anticipated.

Orvanis,

Came here to say this. The admin of lemm.ee is quite worried about exploding storage prices, and as such enacted the 100kb upper limit for uploads.

Orvanis,

I feel like suspending the specific rules is the only viable long term protest. As much fun as John Oliver pics are, eventually people will tire of the meme.
