Because they’re really different. People who don’t eat rice as a staple aren’t aware how much varieties there are and how different they taste. There are three specific varieties used just in my own house for lunch, breakfast dishes and dinner respectively.

Japanese or Thai rice are totally different in taste, consistency and texture.

It would be like trying to bake using whole wheat flour instead of refined flour.

Weird color banding in Jellyfin Media Player

I’ve been a long time jellyfin user but I haven’t been able to ditch plex completely because of this problem. On my linux system with nvidia, with hardware decoding enabled/off/copy or with any of the codecs, I get this weird color bands in video when I use JMP. It doesn’t happen with the plex app or when directly using...

Quad9 Blocks Pirate Site Globally After Sony Demanded €10,000 Fine * TorrentFreak (torrentfreak.com)

Following another setback in its legal dispute with Sony Music, Quad9 has decided to block pirate site Canna worldwide. The court-ordered block was initially restricted to Germany but the music label complained that VPNs and a mobile network still allowed Germans to access the pirate site. Quad9, meanwhile, has appealed the...

Of course, if they went head to head, both cloudflare and Google would have the resources to fight back while quad9 is just a non-profit.

I’m not one of those people, especially since I don’t live in the US but is it so hard to envision having different views on different issues?

All of the stances taken by one side need not resonate with you.

I for example am not in support of social media witch hunts when someone is accused of being racist/sexist/classist and and so on. I firmly believe that we should be instituting bodies that have the power to investigate issues like this and take appropriate actions, with more freedom than the typical judicial process. This however does not mean that I don’t support gender equality, climate action or social welfare measures.

Another example would be affirmative action. I find it horrible that the supreme court gutted it the way it did but I also find it quite unpleasant that the elected representatives, in all this time, did not try to replace it with grassroot level measure such as food security, free tuition, books etc. higher school and teacher density in lower income or low performing areas. I feel that affirmative action was a stop gap measure, but it ended up being the prop used by politicians to not act on more fundamental issues.

Honestly, I would rather forgo the label altogether. In my experience label makes people into tribes and tribes aren’t really conducive to nuanced dialogue or individual opinions, rather, they’re good at collective action.

You know I get that you don’t see 100s or even 1000s of comments on each post but I’ve found that on lemmy people are actually willing to talk to you and listen. You don’t have to worry no one will see you or reply to you because you don’t have enough upvotes.

Are we also getting DDoSd? I’m getting constant timeouts and json errors here over the last one hour or so.

Pretty much. This is far beyond what an LLM can do as well.

Radio waves are light too. The article says that they’re planning to use near infrared range for Lo-Fi. It will basically be mostly limited to short distances and line of sight. I also wonder how natural light in those frequencies from cooking, exhaust etc. would affect the signal.

Hey, don’t know if you’ll see this but thank you for all the work you’ve been putting into making sure this platform is not on fire :)

In my own life regarding similar conflict of needs and responsibilities, I’ve often found it useful to just decide what amount of time I’m comfortable commiting to a thing such that I still enjoy doing it and it doesn’t ruin the rest of the things I want to do in my life, and stick to that hard time limit, come hell or high water. This might not suit you or might not help in this situation, but hopefully it helps a little.

I understand the arguments given by many of us regarding why knowing the demographics is important. Maybe I shouldn't feel this way, but I bear the burden of having to deal with the crap that comes with being at the intersection of many of the categories that are discriminated against in real life, and reddit/lemmy was/is a place where I could engage with others while not having to shoulder most of that. So it bothers me a little that it is being brought up here too, albeit indirectly. On the other hand I can imagine how this would be different if there was actual discriminatory behaviour in beehaw itself.

Better iOS apps for Lemmy?

I’ve been trying to use mlem now for about a week and I just find that it lacks a lot of very basic functionality. Don’t get me wrong, I understand it’s all new and everyone’s scrambling to build and improve, I’m not faulting the mlem devs here. But until things like copy/paste work and notifications exist, the mobile...

It is hilarious to see this happening. Option A, he could have just shut up, released a press statement and waited till this blew over, he didn't do that. Option B would have been to do an AMA, engage with people and say nice but meaningless things to placate people and do whatever he wants in private, he didn't do that either.

Instead he choses to host an AMA, copy pastes canned responses, edits his comment when someone caught it, ditches the canned response when a question is asked about the Apollo thing and doubles down, and finally leaves after answering 14 questions.

You really can't make this shit up 🤣

Something that seems to be missing: Someone is working on an API compatibility/translation layer to help in porting reddit apps to lemmy and have already got some basic features working in RedReader. The RedReader (opensource Android reddit client) dev has expressed some interest in this along with the user base.

Following remote communities is hard.

It's easy to discover communities on my instance via the dedicated page in the hamburger menu. But let's say I want to follow a community on another instance, such as !lemmy . I might have found its name mentioned in a post or comment. When I click on the provided link, I'm thrown on that instances web page, from which I of...

Parsnip8904,
@Parsnip8904@beehaw.org avatar

I totally agree. Something I've found that works for me: Go to the communities page or tab if you're using the app and search for the community without the @thing. Communities with all matching names from all federated instances will show up there.

Parsnip8904,
@Parsnip8904@beehaw.org avatar

I see a lot of people saying let this happen. I acknowledge that reddit has also sort of lost their point but a lot of people have put countless hours into building stuff both on communities and as devs building apps like redreader and rif. I don't want to see all of those people basically lose all their effort and work because a company decided to make money.

anders, to lemmy

Lemmy is booming

I have never before received so many reactions and comments on my Lemmy posts before, so it's obvious to see, that there are many new members here.
Welcome to all the new! And I'm looking forward to see more of you here.
Cheers!
