Peafield,

I like how the figures look like they’re desperately trying to come up with some reason why unions are bad.

Peafield,

Here is an interesting fact: Bananas are naturally radioactive. They contain potassium, and a tiny fraction of that potassium is actually the radioactive isotope potassium-40. This has even led to the creation of the “banana equivalent dose,” a playful unit of radiation exposure!

Peafield,

I have a 7900 xtx. I’m such a noob at this. What actually is the Rocm?

Peafield,

What is wrong with people. I was just telling a friend to go see that spot and that specific tree recently.

Peafield,

Why does this feel like it’s already out of date? I guess the Apple one is just more impressive.

gf wants total silence

It’s a sunny day, we’re outside, good mood, drinking a coffee. I try to strike a conversation, my gf says its too early for philosophical discussions. I tell her we can instead talk about whatever she feels like. She says she doesn’t want to talk about anything. We weirdly sit in silence for a while. I tell her it’s...

Peafield,

I struggled with this for a long time. I grew up in a house where silence meant something was wrong. My partner helped me understand that’s not the case. Sometimes it’s nice just to be together and do nothing.

Peafield,

I had the exact same problem with Ubuntu trying to get steam games to run. Unfortunately I could not resolve it and was advised to move to another distro. I chose Fedora and now everything works perfectly without having to make any adjustments. I know it’s not the answer you’re looking for, but it is a solution.

Peafield,

I’m not sure if mint is completely the same, but on Ubuntu you can easily make a bootable USB of another distro using this method: ubuntu.com/…/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu#2-requi…

You’d then back up your data, and restart your computer and then, depending on the computer, it might either start the distro installation or you’ll need to go into bios and configure your computer to boot from USB.

It sounds more complicated than it is, but there are lots of online tutorials to show you how to do it. Just make sure to back up your data first just in case.

Peafield,

I had this dread too! I thought it would be incredibly time consuming but it ended up being a 30 min job (when I’d spent at least 4 days trying to make steam work on Ubuntu). Distro hopping is definitely one of the best features of Linux.

Peafield,

I just finished Dust, the third in the dystopian/sci-fi Wool trilogy by Hugh Howey. The first two books are great but the third feels a little rushed. I can feel the publisher breathing down his neck to get the book out as quickly as possible. But overall I enjoyed the trilogy and the grand narrative is even more prescient with everything happening in the world today. I’d recommend it for sure!

Peafield,

Yours is so big it’s caused a black hole and sent us back in time.

[Discussion] Project Hail Mary - Andy Weir (Spoilers) (lemmy.world)

We are two weeks into the month of September now. I think this might be a reasonable amount of time for some readers to have completed this book if they started early this month. At least I finished it last week. I’ll leave this thread pinned for the rest of the month and next weekend I’ll create the poll for the next book...

Peafield,

One of my favourite sci-fi books of all time. I managed to have nothing spoiled and was stunned by the direction the book went in. Loved it.

Peafield,

Controversial opinion here, but I think it was the best Stargate. The mystery they were building was so captivating. Really sad it was cancelled.

Peafield,

I’ve started to feel dirty clicking on icons like some sort of peasant.

[Request] Server-side plugin that prevents mobs spawning above ground at night but allows mobs to spawn in caves?

Ideally I would like a spigot plugin that makes the game pretend it’s “daytime” for the purpose of mob spawns, even at night. If this isn’t possible, I would also settle for a fabric mod that disables hostile spawns above sea level. Does this exist?...

Peafield,

I’m sure you know but this is a feature of terrafirmacraft. Maybe check the modlist there to see if you can adapt it for your server.

Peafield,

Such an amazing experience. Worth every penny.

Peafield,

I have the Framework 12th gen DIY edition and I love it. I love not worrying that if I break any part of it, I won’t have to throw the whole thing away. I love that it adapts to what I need with the interchangeable expansion cards. I’ve had it for 6 months now and I still love using it. Definitely recommend.

Peafield,

I did, but only by installing another distro (Fedora).
