Porcupine,

My work phone is an iPhone. It’s fine. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The camera is great, even compared to my pixel. The thing that drives me nutty is all of the ads. I love having ReVanced and xManager on my personal phone.

Porcupine,

Planet Zoo.

As a kid who grew up playing Zoo Tycoon, I was STOKED for a new Zoo management game. I even built a whole new computer to run it.

Turns out it’s more of a 3-D modeling program than a management/simulation game. And I don’t have the time or patience to figure it out.

Porcupine,

Every. single. action. is. so. tedious. The second I tried to place my first path and build an enclosure, I knew I was in over my head.

I understand the finicky controls are what allow people to build incredible, elaborate structures. But I don’t want to spend 12 hours designing a crystal monkey enclosure.

“Derry Girls” and “Pen15” are both hilarious and perfectly capture the awkwardness of being a teenage girl. I actually had to ask my husband to leave the room during Pen15, because it felt like he was watching footage of my most embarrassing moments.

Edit to add: if you have HBO, we’ve also really been enjoying “The Righteous Gemstones”. It’s about a family that runs a megachurch. “White Lotus”, which is about rich people on vacation, isn’t really what I would call a lightheaded comedy… but it’s definitely funny! Especially the first season.

Porcupine,

Upvote when it’s a hot take I agree with. It’s gotta be a hot take though. Not the most popular opinion.

Aaaaand that’s it. Literally everything else I just read and move on.

Porcupine,

Honestly I just order from Target. I know the products are legit, and I can usually do same day pickup.

(Lately I’ve preferred to shop in person. The stereotype is true – once you become a mom, getting a Starbies and walking around Target becomes your self-care.)

Porcupine,

One. I am a dumb dumb and don’t quite understand the point of being on multiple instances. Also so many of them are weirdly… ideological??

Porcupine,

Huh. I call Lemmy users “Lemmers”. Is “Lemmies” the agreed term?

12 reasons to stop using Goodreads - selected by Goodreads staff (help.goodreads.com)

It could be kind of lame to poke fun at a site that I don’t use (anymore), but I find this funny enough to share: Goodreads has started changing and updating their site last year, but apparently they’ve broken a ton of things in the process, and now they’ve published an announcement with the list of 12 bugs they’re...

Porcupine,

Tbh good reads has always been a little garbage. The tracking features were nice, but I don’t think I ever found a decent recommendation through Goodreads.

I’m at a point in my life where I almost exclusively read cheesy historical romance. Romance.io has been a great resource for finding books and tracking my tbr/completed books. You can also search by trope, which is great when you are in the mood for something specific. I wonder if other genres have similar sites.

For non-romance reading, I hate to say it but booktube and booktok have been the best resources. There was a trend for a while where people ranked classic books, and I was able to find some great booktubers whose taste aligns nearly perfectly with my own. I know someone who ranks Franny and Zooey at S tier and The Scarlet Letter at F tier is going to have some great recs for me.

Porcupine,

My heart says unsweetened black iced tea, but after a bout of kidney stones I guess I’d have to go with an iced herbal tea. Maybe something minty.

Porcupine,

Unfortunately black tea is high in oxalate, which in excess amounts can cause calcium-oxalate stones (the most common type of kidney stones). It’s recommended that kidney stoners keep their daily oxalate intake below 50mg, and a cup of black tea can have up to 15mg.

Porcupine,

Do you add milk to your tea? When oxalate is consumed with calcium, it binds in the bowel and the calcium-oxalate is passed through the stool. When you consume oxalate without calcium, your body leeches calcium from your bones and it binds in the kidney, creating stones. So just try to have a bit of calcium-rich food with your tea. 😊

The only foods that should be avoided 100% are spinach, almonds, and rhubarb. The oxalate content in those foods is insane. Like five almonds has 110mg oxalate! That’s why a lot of people who go on diets get kidney stones. They think they’re being healthy by eating big handfuls of spinach and almonds, and then wind up in the hospital.

Haven't played for a while, what new DLC are worth getting?

I stopped playing around the time the My Wedding Stories pack came out (broken). The High School pack that launched after that was also broken (and as an aging off player who does worldbuilding it is not in the least compatible with my playstyle). Are the new Generations pack and the Horse pack interesting/worthwhile? Or at...

Porcupine,

All of them. 🏴‍☠️

But seriously, I feel like Seasons is an essential. If you like building, Tiny Living and Dream Home Decorator are great. Gameplay wise… idk they all kind of suck and feel samey after a while. And all of them are broken in their own way.

What are you Reading? (August 2023) (lemmy.world)

I’ve put together a collage of some books from last months What are you Reading? post. It’s mostly random, but the more discussion something gets the more it stands out to me. Going forward I’m going to make a new post every month to talk about what people are reading....

Porcupine, (edited )

I just finished reading “Fair Play”, which is a book on the division of unpaid/unseen labor in households. Next up we have “Thriving with Adult ADHD”, “The ADHD Effect on Marriage”, and “Organizing Solutions for People With ADHD”.

Can you guess the current issue in the Porcupine House? 😅

Tell myself to quit being such a piece of shit and to get it together.

The results are variable.

Porcupine,

Thanks for this recommendation! I’m always looking for simple and fast recipes. 99% of the time they start with “pull out the slow cooker” or “open up a can of Campbell’s”. This looks more up my alley.

Porcupine,

I recently made the NYT caramelized shallot pasta and it is SO good. I haven’t bought a subscription yet, but I may need to get on that…

Porcupine,

This is such a good recommendation! I like BudgetBytes but find myself having to doctor up a lot of the recipes. I already see like ten things I want to try from RecipeTinEats.

Porcupine,

A little dull tbh. I still pop over to reddit when I’m on my desktop to visit my favorite subreddits (especially my bumper group). Hopefully Lemmy gets better, but I think step one is the community needs to stop being so goddamn meta and focus on building active communities.

Porcupine,

He's still going on about vaccines? Most antivac folk I know have fucked off to their echo chambers. Or died.

Porcupine,

Whelp. I guess that means I’m playing the Sims 2 for another ten years. Hopefully one of the other life simulators turns out well.
