    Curious, certified in what way?

    I mean, it's a certified Unix™️, but that doesn't mean much.

Man, good times. I miss the Tennant-Smith era. (Not hating on Capaldi or Whittaker, it's just that that era was special to me)

Why is it that people's reaction to is either cult-level positive or Ted Cruz-level disgust?

I don't think I've heard more than a single person basically say, "Yeah, Rust is ok, but I like X better because Y." ;)

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @MadMike77

I think the negative reactions are against the rust hype, rather than the language itself, but I'm speaking as someone who isn't particularly familiar with the language itself, nor its community, so I have no judgements about it along those lines.

This week I pushed updates to the @XOrgFoundation MAINTAINERS file at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/doc/xorg-docs/-/blob/master/MAINTAINERS giving better information about the status of the various X.Org packages and sent out a mail to packagers and distro builders making sure they knew which packages are no longer supported upstream and which they should consider retiring as well: https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2023/05/02/3

Oops, I'm still using xdm on a couple boxes (mostly because it made me feel nostalgic -- (re?)-discovered it because it's default in #OpenBSD.

I guess I should migrate to lightdm :/

I like how simple xdm is that to configure, though

    Dreams like that are wonderful!

Years ago I had a dream of a beautiful song. It had melody and accompaniment, backing vocals and the whole nine yards.

It filled my heart with joy and I scoured the internet looking for it -- it only existed in my dream.

The only part of it I could remember is, "There's a promise in the morning sky."

I just honestly love both late nights and early mornings, ergo my circadian rhythm has PTSD from me 😆

In other news, I've been using full time. I can say I'm as comfortable with out-of-the-box Gnome as with my built-from-source, very-personalized . I get people are sometimes pretty opinionated and even argumentative about their digital environments, but I guess I've learnt to Stop Worrying and Love The Get Things Done. XD

    Junkyard programming language?
Depends on where you're coming from.

If you're comparing it to something like Rust or Nim, maybe.

But with all of its dangers aside (good Perl requires self-discipline!), I'd call Perl the queen of the scripting languages, in a hot minute.

Holy mackerel, I read that as HOURS of PTO at first.

You'd need nothing less than 30 years of tenure in a U.S. corp for 30 days of PTO, if at all.

About a month and a half as an intern junior dev. It's been a rollercoaster so far. One day every problem is solved and everything works, the next day the tiniest stuff is seemly broken and there's no way to fix it. In other words, one day I think I can make it, the other day I blame myself for even thinking about trying to make a living of something I'm utterly inept for. Programmers are supposed to be problem solvers, but what if the problem is the programmer, like, myself? XD

Be confident of your ability to grow, learn, and adapt.
That is how to stay sane when you know that what you don't know is 100X bigger than what you know.

Have grace for yourself as a person that is growing and learning.

Don't judge your "Self 1.2" against others' "Self 9.87."

We're always trying to push the boundaries of our limitations. If we don't, we're effectively dead.

Don't discount yourself. You still have a lot to contribute, and your challenges are just that -- challenges.

Me in 1990: Do you guys still use ascii in the future?
Me in 2023: Well, kindasorta. We use a mostly ascii-compatible character encoding called UTF-8 which includes every symbol from just about every language known to man, so there's no need to change sw/hw to view something in Japanese, for example.
    1990: Wow, that's amazing!
2023: It also provides characters called "eh-mo-jee" which consists of smiley faces and symbols which is slowly replacing intelligent written speech.
    1990: WHAT.

Macs were barely able to handle "full-screen" 320240 videos doubled to 640480 by 1994 or so. (unlike DOS machines, macs had no high resolution modes to make things like games, demos, and video playback easier)

Probably videos in early CDROM games. FLI had a pretty low CPU overhead compared to something like MPEG -- more like very early QuickTime.

    Yeah, it's nuts.

Part of what made the first Macintosh models so amazing was the Assembly-optimized graphics routines and Bill Atkinson's brilliant algorithms.

Those graphics routines on a lowly 8Mhz 68000 were nearly as fast as C-compiled ones on high-end UNIX workstations at the time.

My Mac SE took about a minute or two to decode a 320*200 GIF, and several minutes for a JPEG.

It's good to take time off for self-care. I'm still trying to find my balance as well, as I'm working with family, and the needs and roles there are quite different than a regular corporate environment. It's easy to get burned out.

In a fanfic I started writing years ago, my character's room in the was decorated like a summer cottage, complete with holographic back porch facing a wintery forest.

I like to imagine myself there from time to time.
