If I leave for , I'll definitely miss seeing THIS. :/

(as opposed to:
~ $ mount |grep -vie ext[0-9] -e btrfs |wc -l

🫠)

@skyglobe

Oh it's not ZFS itself that I'll miss (although I do like it), it's not having tons of mountpoint spam 😂

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@teamtuck

Linux has a real mountpoint spam problem. I don't doubt that all of the various mountpoints have a good purpose, but it's annoying to have to filter through the list of mountpoints for actual disk volumes.

It's a silly criticism, but it still annoys me.

It's also the #1 reason I steer clear from snap -- you get a mountpoint per installed snap, whether it's being used or not.

That is STUPID.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@teamtuck

Not anymore, because there's various devices: USB (sda), nvme, and others.

I do have a 'showvols' function that filters out all the tmpfs, sysfs, kitchensinkfs spam, but I have to constantly update it to filter out the latest mountpoint spam added to Linux nearly every year 🙄

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@royal

Yeah. I can deal with /proc /dev, /sys, and /tmp, but it's getting really out of hand lately.

Has anyone had any luck getting the digitizer on their "tablet" (mine's an X200t) working under ?

I followed the steps in the wiki, but no dice.

Today I'll be hosting the first staff Bible study. I. AM. NERVOUS.

This is NOT my strength. My strength is staying behind the scenes and making everything work for SOMEONE ELSE.

30 years ago, one decision altered the course of our connected world

On April 30, 1993, the World Wide Web was released into the public domain. It revolutionized the internet and allowed users to create websites filled with graphics, audio and hyperlinks.

    lol sorry XD

    I used to work with some z/OS folks, and that's where I'd hear the term. I've been out of IT for just about a decade now. :(:

    That's another term I haven't heard in a long time, "Tape Operator."
    I think I knew some Tape Operators once, like 20 years ago.
    Man, that's really getting into the recesses of my brain.

    Pretty sure some government offices were using 9-tracks into the mid-naughties if not until this moment 😂

    They need to quietly reintroduce spinning 9-track machines into modern SciFi and not tell anyone what they are 😅

    One of my favorite childhood memories was of the 3270s they put in the Perry-Casteñada Library at UT Austin in the early mid eighties for the library catalog.

    I would play on those things for what seemed like hours even though it was nothing but a catalog.

    The image of those crisp green screens is etched into my memory.

    It's still my favorite mode in cool-retro-terminal 😅

    Is anyone using the @PINE64 yet?
    Is it ready for early adopters, or is it still dev-only status?
    It's almost a couple years old now, and I'm not seeing much in the way of status updates AFAICT.

    The problem I always have with partially drm-free stores is that the stuff I want is almost never drm-free.

    What their current state and differences are?

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @orbifx

    My totally n00b opinion is:

    : a more traditional unix, very focused goals (similar to ), broad architecture support
    : more geared towards the enterprise, more feature-complete (bhyve virtualization, linux executable compatibility, ZFS), a little better hardware compatibility on the one PC (Thinkpad) I tried both of them on.

    To be fair, I spent very little time on NetBSD (only because I couldn't get suspend to work).

    ...

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @orbifx

    ...

    You should also consider OpenBSD. It actually had the best hardware support, resuming from suspend much faster than FreeBSD on my Thinkpad X200. FreeBSD is the most Linux-like, and the most feature-complete BSD, though.
