Hmm, just noticed that info.gigaset.net is no longer resolving. It was the backend for some services provided by Germany's last manufacturer of and mobile phones, , to users of its IP phones. Gigaset had gone bankrupt last year and was bought by earlier this year.
They have recently fired a quarter of employees.

I guess, they are more interested in Gigaset's manufacturing capabilities in Europe than the phone business.

@philpem Here's a 15 year old post describing how to provide custom RSS feeds to a phone by having info.gigaset.net resolve to a local web server. Includes a Ruby script. I haven't tried it yet, however.

I liked people posting annoying commentary as quote-tweets a lot better than when they do it in comments. Quotes were easier to ignore - because it felt that they were meant for their followers, not for me to react to and to manage (esp. if I don't want to be flooded with notifications). Can't wait for the feature.

(Because this is : you may feel different about this. It is obviously fine. Be civil, don't mansplain - even if you are not a man.)

RaphaelWimmer,
@RaphaelWimmer@hci.social avatar

@vicgrinberg
While I'd ❤️ quote toots, I feel a little bit different. Replies under my post are like people coming into my house. It is my responsibility (and right) to counter or amplify their arguments.
With quote tweets, I lose control over the interpretation. It also can feel like being dragged into a hostile crowd.
I once had a professor quote one of my tweets with "That is nonsense" and his followers agreeing with him [1]. I felt bad the whole day.

@vicgrinberg Side note: your warning against mansplaining makes me slightly uncomfortable in a similar way. To me, it also conveys the not-sohidden threat: "take care not to disagree with me too hard, otherwise I might label it as mansplaining and tell everyone that you are sexist.

I'm pretty sure that you don't intend this interpretation.
But your warning causes me to be extra careful with my wording and maybe even avoid commenting. I wonder if others might feel the same or if it is just me.

RaphaelWimmer,
@RaphaelWimmer@hci.social avatar

@vicgrinberg Yeah, I guess it depends a lot on who and how many people visit your house.
For me and my account, the chance to foster a good discussion outweighs the minor inconvenience of addressing the very few problematic posts.

RaphaelWimmer,
@RaphaelWimmer@hci.social avatar

@vicgrinberg Yes, indeed. :)

Uncomfortable thought of the day (via [1]):

Have there already been sightings of LLMs asking questions on forums like StackOverflow?
Seems like something that some hot AI startup should be doing right now.

"ChatGPT not giving you good answers? Let us ask your question on fifty programming forums in parallel and generate a response based on expert consensus! To reduce latency, we'll identify the hottest upcoming questions and pre-post them!!"

En route to ACM in Cork, Ireland together with @vitus and 100 kg of equipment for our TipTrack demo.
Travelling by train and ferry, of course.

RaphaelWimmer,
@RaphaelWimmer@hci.social avatar

I'm again very lucky with - no delays so far.

And I finally found out why my laptop could not access the internet on ICE trains: The WLANonICE wifi network uses the IP range 172.18.0.0/16 - which is also used by my local Docker installation by default.
So, all DNS requests to 172.18.0.1 hit my Docker network instead of the wifi network.

Fix: change Docker's default IP range:

Arrived in , France, yesterday evening - train ride went by without major problems (only 10 min delay in Paris, down from 20 min that accrued iin Germany).
After a stroll through the city center, we hopped onto a bus to the ferry port.

RaphaelWimmer,
@RaphaelWimmer@hci.social avatar

Check-in to the ferry (Irish Ferries' W.B. Yeats, built in Flensburg in 2018) was quick. Only a few passengers boarded by foot.
The security check was security theater at its best. There was an x-ray machine and a metal detector but they were not in use. The guard asked me to open my backpack but not the suitcase or my carry-on bag. I had to put my small Leatherman Micra scissors into the suitcase instead of the backpack - but we then carried all our luggage to the bus and into our cabin.

Now en route to through the night and through calm sea on the W.B. Yeats.

Closing in on Ireland now.

In 2019, I have pledged to stop flying until mankind has stopped global warming (not really counting on that).
But is travelling by ferry really more sustainable than flying?

Definitely. A one-way flight MUC-DUB emits about 300 kg CO2 whereas travel by train (~13 kg) and ferry (6.5 kg for foot passengers) emits only 20 kg.

@RaphaelWimmer Hello (ferry port)! Waiting to disembark with about six other foot passengers.
Taking the ferry by foot instead of by car causes only 10g CO2e per km instead of 100 g.

@RaphaelWimmer By the way, sign language interpreters have become a common sight at HCI conferences now.
(Even though I cannot understand them, I love watching the expressions and gestures.)

@RaphaelWimmer The first papers session includes data probes, mixed-reality prototyping, the router of all evil, makerspace reflections, knitting, and a creepy receipt for personal data.

The conference program is available via https://programs.sigchi.org/tei/2024/program - including links to papers and videos in the Digital Library.

Thrilled to announce my new position: I've gone to bed.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to focus on my dreams for an extended period of time. Exciting times ahead!

@andresmh I had considered posting this on LinkedIn but then people over there would have noticed that I haven't posted about great achievements in a while - which would have damaged my brand.
In other news: I have switched positions again to a more fast-paced environment (sitting in the train right now)
