My recent COVID infection has been a real olfactory roller coaster.

I didn't lose my sense of smell at any point...if anything, it's become very sensitive to particular smells.

I accused my family of leaving one of their gross scented candles open, but it was actually a tree blooming outside.

I couldn't really smell my hockey equipment, but my body wash has now become a 20/10 in scent power.

Going for wings tonight, should be fun.

@johnefrancis
Back in Feb 2020 when I had the mystery sniffles, I had a wonky sense of taste & smell for about a week. Last year when I had a really nasty bout of Covid, I only had the "everything smells like snot" phase like any old flu.

One of the things that has fallen to the way side with the past few years is the idea of brand loyalty. Yes for certain items I have a preference (I’ve had some clothing etc for 5-10+ yrs) in terms of durability and quality but beside that? Fuck no. Price. Patagonia? Nope. Canadian brands? Not really. If it’s not on sale then won’t even bother. I have mostly had the same clothes for the past five years, repairing them, maintaining, which I’ve always done but now with earnest

I can relate on the weight fluctuations. I have a entire wardrobe that's a size smaller that's waiting for me in my closet.

I don't judge people who don't have much of a choice on where they buy their groceries. But CBC running such a piece when the impacts of the boycott are not even known yet sure is something. No reason for the national broadcaster to run defensive P.R. for a huge corporation.

🌶️ take on the announcement of "in -office 3d/week" for public service employees.

The federal govt still has a 50% reduction of office space planned.

Most of the goals of the return-to-office policy can't be realized, because team members aren't even in the same province anymore, and they don't have actual office space to return to.

The policy is optional and low level managers will have the final say, not TB.

It's a fake. Nobody wants it to happen. RTO mostly won't happen.

ShaunOttawa,
@ShaunOttawa@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis
Optional? You wouldn't know that the way most executives talk. 🤣
From what I've heard, there hasn't been much enforcement for those not showing up.
Found out today our current office space usage is at 66% capacity with the current 2 days RTO. Add a third day. Remove exemptions. Reduce overall portfolio by 50%. Good look to Accommodations to figure this one out!

Wednesday: TB announces new RTO policy increasing on site presence.
Thursday: Info comes out that the secretary of TB works remotely and regularly flies into Ottawa costing us tens of thousands of dollars.
Friday: Secretary of TB resigns for "health reasons"
That was quick.

Get back to the office and beat those carbon emissions records, public servants. Beat them in the wrong direction, that is. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-carbon-emissions-ghg-inventory-1.7191765

At least you're probably safe since you were WFH before March 2020.

You know what, I really hope the IT people who threatened to go private actually do it.

ShaunOttawa,
@ShaunOttawa@mastodon.social avatar

@stephanie
Doing this after we started putting a squeeze on hiring consultants (with no plan to replace them with FTEs). Some IT services are gonna suffer if people start leaving.

ShaunOttawa,
@ShaunOttawa@mastodon.social avatar

@stephanie
In a field that already struggles to attract and retain talent, and already has vacancies all over. We've been plugging those holes with consultants for years. 🤷‍♂️
Sigh... another 10 years of this to go.

ShaunOttawa,
@ShaunOttawa@mastodon.social avatar

@Auxonic @stephanie
Because of some recent scandals, and budgetary constraints, a bunch of contract renewals for consultants got put on hold. We have a team of specialists that is losing 80% of their staff for at least a couple months. It's more than an inconvenience that might delay some projects, it's a damn security risk if there's not enough people to support a critical function.

ShaunOttawa,
@ShaunOttawa@mastodon.social avatar

@Auxonic @stephanie
And if RTO pushes out the remaining FTEs in these specialist toles... we are so fucked. Out of desperation some consultant will make bank off our poor management decisions.
Kicker is that some of these pricy consultants might be former employees!

Ah yes, a connection to a building that isn't even built yet.
It wouldn't piss me off if it wasn't for the fact that we already have many missing connections between existing stations and existing destinations.

I'm always so confused by these articles. Are people honestly going through life with their phone making any noise? I almost always have my phone on silent, with strict DND hours.

The only notifications I have on on my phone are phone calls, which vibrate, and texts and reminders, which only appear and otherwise make no noise. The reason why is because fuck my phone.

ShaunOttawa,
@ShaunOttawa@mastodon.social avatar

@casseagull
Day/evening: phone calls only
Night: do not disturb
I've had it setup this way for years, ever since I started using a smartphone. Getting constant pings got old real fast.
I've been going further in recent years and even disabling notifications altogether for certain apps too.
