It perfectly symbolizes the relentless pressure of the boot of the tech bros on the workers in the industries they disrupt.

SlopppyEngineer, (edited )

Not really. Economies started to slow down and crash when warming gets over 2°C and CO2 production crashes with it.

SlopppyEngineer,

There isn’t one definitive paper I can give. They’re are of course also papers claiming the opposite.

I’ve seen multiple articles about this. Less yield from staple crops, productivity loss with heatwaves, storm damage. There are a bunch of papers too, usually about a specific region. But roughly above 2°C, the hurt really begins with the cost to the economy exceeding almost every country’s growth. Exact numbers differ per article.

SlopppyEngineer,

And Germany’s population, and with that the economy, would start shrinking without immigration. That’s what a fertility rate of 1.7 gets you. Things would go downhill fast enough.

SlopppyEngineer,

cartoonish caricature that’s so on the nose I should be a little embarrassed

Yeah, that describes today’s landscape. The Onion is feeling that one too.

SlopppyEngineer,

Nobody would talk about it if it was a standard square city. Masdar city is a square design of 6km² for example, also trying to be a hub of future technologies, and most people will go “mass what city?” The Line attracts attention, and with attention often comes money. At least they have the first part right, the second part isn’t working out as they hoped it would.

SlopppyEngineer,

Welcome to late stage capitalism, where billionaires are the pharaohs of old, doing huge constructions sacrificing countless workers just for vanity.

SlopppyEngineer,

Originally pizza didn’t have tomato either, because it only grew was on a still undiscovered continent. Now you can’t but a pizza without. Things change.

SlopppyEngineer,

Yes, the suits have taken over and switched the money squeeze to max.

SlopppyEngineer,

To be eventually bought up by a private equity firm that gives it the last squeeze before throwing the withered husk on the final Google Graveyard.

SlopppyEngineer,

It puts it in the same category as aspartame and mobile phones. That’s below the category with sunlight in it.

SlopppyEngineer,

“It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning. It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion.”

SlopppyEngineer,

climeworks.com

There you go. You got cash, they build the plant for you.

SlopppyEngineer,

1.5°C before 2030

2.0°C before 2050

3.0°C before 2100

That’s what I get if I skim a few articles. Dates are without mitigation.

SlopppyEngineer,

You have the Great Depression and 2008 financial crisis. That’s going to be the permanent state after 2050. Few jobs, high prices, that kind of misery.

SlopppyEngineer,

Of course not. You’re never sure if another war starts or when another COVID happens. Nobody can make quantifiable predictions. Those that do are trying to sell you something.

SlopppyEngineer,

That reasoning, if not the exact words about scientists being wrong, was also used by critics to say climate warning plateaued and no action at all should be taken. Turned out the critics were wrong.

I’ve seen a lot of the classics being brought up: There is no warming, warming is good, it’s not human made, it’s too late anyway, it’s just the weather, there are no ill effects, … So I’ll follow the scientists, they got a lot more right than the critics.

SlopppyEngineer,

Economists. It’s about jobs and prices after all. It’s even debated if economics is a science.

SlopppyEngineer,

(*) where is doesn’t stand in the way of profit

SlopppyEngineer,

And they protest in Germany, the economy that’s built on producing cars and who would happily keep producing more ICE BMWs. The same country that sees speed limits on the Autobahn as sacrilege.

SlopppyEngineer,

In Europe soy milk can’t legally be called milk anymore. It’s Soy Drink on the packaging. The farmers won that one. Now they’re coming after vegi burgers allowed to be called burgers.

SlopppyEngineer,

I think it now just says SOY or OATS on the packaging. Seems marketing figured out that if you stop the drink you can increase the font size.

Russia threatens Britain with retaliation if involvement in Ukraine war deepens (www.pbs.org)

Russia on Monday threatened to strike British military facilities and said it would hold drills simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons amid sharply rising tensions over comments by senior Western officials about possibly deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine....

SlopppyEngineer,

These days Russia mainly strikes with misinformation campaigns and hacking attacks. Sometimes they even sabotage underseas infrastructure.

SlopppyEngineer,

Netanyahu is indeed the type to drop an asteroid on his own city on purpose so he has a reason to go kill bugs.
