I’m just your average Canadian wolf. I’m a siren enthusiast and railfan as my main hobbies. I run the Civil Defense Sirens Wiki, and am working on restoring a few vintage sirens (such as a FS&S Model L and a rare Sterling Siren MOD. F) as well as a 1970s Safetran mechanical crossing bell.

I’m a part of a small group of railroad crossing signal enthusiasts who run a site that seeks to document railroad crossing signals and their equipment across the US and elsewhere. The site’s been around since the 90s and was originally made by an enthusiast named Mike Hickok. He sadly passed away in 2011, so we keep the site and forum alive in his memory. The site’s Canada section hadn’t been updated since 2007 until I began documenting signals myself over a year ago, and it now has over 1200 pictures from 53 different crossings that I’ve documented. I’m proud of that, and I hope to get some more soon.

Russia threatens Britain with retaliation if involvement in Ukraine war deepens (www.pbs.org)

Russia on Monday threatened to strike British military facilities and said it would hold drills simulating the use of battlefield nuclear weapons amid sharply rising tensions over comments by senior Western officials about possibly deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine....

You don’t rise in the ranks of the Russian military by being competent, you rise by kissing enough asses and having the right connections.

[1952] BNCO Mobil Directo Air Raid Siren (lemmy.ca)

This is a 1952 ad for the engine-driven BN52 model Mobil Directo air raid siren, which used a 25HP Wisconsin air-cooled engine to drive both the chopper (the noisemaker) and two belt-driven pulleys to spin the siren around. Later BN44E models would switch the engine to an electric motor. It was one of the first rotational...

Civil Defense contractors who work with municipalities to install systems of sirens to their desired spec. There are still companies that do this today such as W.S. Darley and Edwards. City civil defense officials would also look at these ads when deciding which company to go with for a siren system.

Explains why this thread is nothing but tumbleweeds for me. Blocking Hexbear was the best decision I’ve made on Lemmy.

Then why bother even writing that comment? You clearly cared enough to do so.

Are you kidding? Speak for yourself. I loved retro cartoons like Looney Tunes and the Jetsons when they aired on Teletoon Retro as a kid. Everybody has their own tastes regardless of generation.

There is a whole lot more wrong with Hartman than what that article mentioned. If you have the time, Saberspark made an excellent (and long) video about Hartman and his fall from grace.

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

I said this on another thread posted by a very antagonistic vegan: Acting holier-than-thou, smug, and hostile is not a good way to convince people of your arguments. It pushes people away and biases them against you and the argument you’re making.

Far too often I see vegans outright shaming and harassing people for choosing to eat meat, or acting smug and superior because they are making “the right moral decision” and everyone else is lessor for thinking otherwise. I often see them call people “stupid” and “lazy” for not making the same choice they did.

Now, if I came here acting the same way, but I was championing eating only meat and shaming others for eating vegetables, I’m sure vegans would be upset for the same reason.

It’s gotten bad enough that a lot of people (admittedly myself included) are put off by vegans and their arguments. Not because the arguments don’t have merit (they certainly do) but because enough vegans have acted antagonistic or smug that they get shunned for it when the discussion gets brought up, because it’s what has become expected.

If you really want people to listen to you, you need to frame it from a friendlier and more down-to-earth position and not come across as hostile. The human mind tends to close itself off immediately when faced with hostility. This doesn’t just apply to discussions about veganism, but any discussion in general really.

Three-day old account, I wouldn’t be surprised if they had another one that was banned.

It’s almost like being extremely antagonistic and smug doesn’t convince people of your arguments and just puts them off…

This might not be a “stupid” question, but it sure is a loaded and leading one that for sure isn’t in good faith. Welcome to my block list, enjoy your stay.

I’ll second the recommendation for Tale of Two Wastelands. I think having the New Vegas engine makes Fallout 3 so much more playable. You can actually use the iron sights, there’s ammo types, etc. I play a heavily modded TTW and I’m having a blast blowing Swampfolk’s heads off with the Y86 gauss rifle.

Streetlight Manifesto is one of the few bands I go out of my way to listen to every song on every album, because they’re that good and have almost no bad songs. I can’t wait for the next album that’s supposed to drop this year.

Edit: Beast in Black too.
