Manyfold v0.65.0 has been released! This release is all about , after our audit last week. There's a big pile of improvements around screen reading, keyboard navigation, colour, labelling, and so on, which will benefit everyone! More to come, too!

It's been great to be able to get some expert advice and then put time into this, thanks to NLNet and @NGIZero. It's a rare opportunity in open source!

I have noticed and have also been informed by some users of @3dprinting that the bot is behaving weirdly and also spamming some notifications.

I believe that I have found the cause of the problem. Something changed in the Mastodon API, breaking how I cleared and managed notifications, thus users were repeatedly responded to, as the notifications were never cleared. I apologize for this.

I have just pushed an update to the bot to update the new APIs. Please let me know if there are any other problems.

My take-aways from this video:

  • While not the best material, PETG is surprisingly wear-resistant, while ABS is surprisingly not, ASA is even worse, and PLA continues to be useless.
  • CF fills don't always help wear resistance: in some cases, a CF-filled filament is worse than its non-filled counterpart.

Needed a holder for paper towels in my new resin workspace, so I thought I'd print this one. I slightly misjudged how much black ABS I had left, so I had to finish it off with gold. Looks good though.

as a service will never be as profitable as services. As you can charge subscriptions and have constant income instead of these lifetime passes. They can't have enough new users build and buy lifetime passes and remain profitable, unless they literally become a bank and invest their money to grow. So they will need a way to milk already invested users with some kind of service

I wish I designed 3d objects that could go viral, but I spend most of my time designing little one-off parts for a hyperspecific need of my own.

Regular reminder to 3D printer minders: replace your fans with known good ones! Manufacturers ship trash fans by default, which make a tonne of noise, emit much less air, and waste power too.

Unless you're on a K1, in which case Creality royally fucked you and nobody has fans for you but them.

I haven't tried to replace mine yet. The blower fan on the side for part cooling has some generic ones on AliExpress, but I have not seen them locally. The back enclosure fan is quite generic, but the hotend is a Creality fan. I will use this as a reminder to keep an eye out and buy backups before I need to replace them, especially if I need to ship them.

Just another thing one should look out for when buying a printer.

The blower fan on the side has some generic models and is similar to the Bambu one. However, due to it being mounted to the side panels made of acrylic, you would want a perfect match.

The hotend fan is probably the biggest pain. My first K1 shipped with a dead hotend fan. It is a four-fin 24V fan, which is difficult to get from my local suppliers if I opt for a generic one. It also has a different form factor, similar to some of the previous Creality printers like the CR6 SE, Ender 3, and Ender 5. So, you might need to buy the official Creality one.

This is The Bull, a crazy little bullhead chronograph made by tiny Dutch microbrand back in 2015 or thereabouts. Last week I took mine a local jeweler to get a new battery put in... and they couldn't, because none of their tools could get the caseback off.

This week, I'll be taking it back to them, with a 3D printed tool sized exactly correctly to unscrew that dodecagonal caseback. I hope they're as excited about this as I am.

A 3D model of printer bed carriage. It's square, with rounded corners, some bent-up edges, and triangular cutouts in a radial pattern. There are eight holes in the middle, shaped to fit screws to MGN12C carriages. At each corner, these is a through hole for a screw. What’s a good polyurethane (TPU) filament that’s easy to print with? Softer is better, but softer is probably more challenging. I’m not particularly price conscious. Buying in/shipping to US.

On @amd 's advice, I'm looking into getting some hex drivers for my upcoming Trident build. However, I am unsure what to get, and my only reasonable source is Aliexpress.

folks: can you recommend anything? I found these: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003662715240.html , but I have no idea if they're any good or not.

I prefer to buy and use screw drivers with removable bits as I feel less restricted and you can add more bits and keep the set the same. But that is just a personal preference.

I upgraded my robot arm with 3d-printed jaws. This means that if I break or glue the jaws to something, they can be easily replaced.

I think this might be the first compliance I've ever designed. V2 will involve another bend in the gripper for a softer touch.

XPlus-3 herders: there's now a modified version of a custom XMax3 toolhead that should fit! https://www.printables.com/model/656620-qidi-x-max-3-toolhead

Gonna try and print this and see if it helps my overheating issues. It'll be ironic if it does, because it would prove, once again, that printer manufacturers either can't engineering, or can't be bothered to engineering. At any price point.

As the videos and articles are coming out more, as deliveries are finally made, I have come to the conclusion that the XL is an early access printer.

It is literally like buying early access games. "Here is a game at full price. The functionality is limited, and we promise we will release this in the future, but there are many bugs."

Prusa literally finalized the design, did some internal testing, and said to themselves, "Yeah. This is fine. Send it to manufacturing."

What I do like about the XL is that they actually use Gcode. For example the and printers have these built in Gcodes. So even with a vanilla install, part of the starting Gcode is hidden begind these macros, unless you completely re-write them.

The XL actually uses the slicer Gcode for stuff like toolchangea. So you are able to change and tweak a lot.

Gonna go out on a bit of a limb here and make a prediction. In 2024, or possibly 2025, Prusa will release a 'Mini 2' or a 'Mini S+' or something similar. It will be the same as the current Mini, with the following changes:

  1. The extruder will be replaced with the Nextruder, still in a Bowden config.
  2. The control board will be changed to the xBuddy (same as the MK4), and the screen will also be the same as the MK4 one.

This is an interesting idea, but even the has shown us that manufacturers will cut costs even for a few dollars. They would avoid using higher end screens, like the did, although the X1C vs P1P and screens are worlds apart.

Also using the same board would almost compromise the higher tier, providing less advantages for purchasing the "higher" tier printers. Although I do agree and build volume is a big thing in what determines the printer I would buy.

Bambu did the opposite by downgrading the screen, but keeping the volume and electronics the same for their cheaper printers.

The market is completely flooded for that range and there are many better printers which you could buy simply for the parts and upgrade the software, if you like, in that range. They really need to be innovative or just rely on customer loyalty and fan boys to buy it.
