Nonnus: spends 3 pages describing how Ampelos wrestles with Dionysos among the flowers

Manuscript: missing some lines

Nonnus: describes Ampelos and Dionysos taking a refreshing bath

Translator's footnote: "Hmm, something is missing here, whatever could have happened, we'll never know..."

Everyone is so hyped about Hades and Persephone when Dionysos and Ampelos is right there

Folktales about Climate Change

I collected some traditional stories about taking care of our natural home, and what happens when we don't.

The more research I do into , the more I dislike Odysseus.

TarkabarkaHolgy,
@TarkabarkaHolgy@ohai.social avatar

@szakib sources vary, but

  • it's his idea to abandon Piloctetes when he is injured
  • he frames Palamedes for treason and has him executed while pretending to be his friend (because Palamedes is smarter than him, but also honest and liked)
  • he suggests they kill Hector's infant son in case he'd grow up and try to take revenge
    So... yeah
TarkabarkaHolgy,
@TarkabarkaHolgy@ohai.social avatar

@dnoate yeah. I keep thinking how we learn about him as "the smart one" a hero that is more likable than those in the Iliad...

TarkabarkaHolgy,
@TarkabarkaHolgy@ohai.social avatar

@szakib this is what makes his story with Palamedes exciting. Palamedes is smart, and definitely a showoff, but an honest guy. Odysseus is smart, sneaky, and ruthless.

Today's #mythology moment:

The Greek army sailing to Troy stopped on the island of Delos. The king of Delos, a son of Apollo, foresaw that the Trojan War will only be won 10 years later.

So, he invited the Greeks to spend 9 years in his kingdom partying, instead of fighting.
They declined.

Imagine, they could have saved 9 years of war on a technicality...

I would ace that so hard.

Was Sleeping Beauty/Briar Rose's kingdom, castle, or town receive names in any major adaptation?

Neither the Perrault, Grimm, Tchaikovsky, or Disney versions had names for the castle/kingdom/town.

Disney's Maleficient did name the kingdom "Ulstead", but spin-offs doesn't count, and anyways, it doesn't name the castle or town.

TarkabarkaHolgy,
@TarkabarkaHolgy@ohai.social avatar

@buherator @zhuowei maybe the Pentamerone does?

Finally watched and I think it was great. It was lovable and fun.

I also think that people considered it a fail for the same reason some hated Turning Red:
Because teenage fangirls are seen as cringe. While teenage fanboys are Spiderman.

of the day:

Reading a legend about how emperor Franz Joseph's wife was a witch who used to turn him into a horse and ride him every night.

As a reminder that traditional storytellers often used everyday spoken language, here is what the wise advisor says when the Emperor confides in him about the matter:

"F*** hell, Joe..."
