I'm reading Eugenie Clark's memoir The Lady and the Sharks about starting her marine laboratory in Florida in the 1950s.

My favorite story is that they accidentally sent (for IDing) a box of snails to an plant expert and a box of plants to a malacologist.

They both identified them correctly, but the plant guy asked why he had to scrape plant matter from snails, and the malacologist asked why they included so much plant matter with that one little snail 😄

The traditional stories we call fairy tales were, before the Grimm era, usually told by adults to adults.

Which means (among other things) that if you can find uncensored sources for them, they can contain a whole lot of swearing.

🤷‍♀️

I saw a meme that asked people that if they could insert one f*** into Lord of the Rings where they would put it. Now I asking myself the same question, but with folktales... 😆

Hungarian : A prince goes out to win a princess, and discovers that the princess already has a secret lover... a twelve-headed dragon.

Sometimes folklore is its own parody. 😆

I just went back on IG because my publisher told me so, and literally every second post I see is an advertisement or a "recommended for you" thing. Is this normal? I am not used to this anymore.

Dr. Jane Goodall visited Hungary recently, and she stayed at a hotel that gives guests bedtime stories (instead of mint) on their pillow every day. I worked with them to create their folktale collection.

So, I had the honor of making a personalized selection of bedtime stories for Dr. Goodall 😊 😊 Which is honestly one of the highlights of my storytelling career 😄 ❤️

Another fun fact:

The Hungarian version of "the tables have turned" is "visszanyal a fagyi"

Which literally translates into

"The ice cream licks back"

🍦

Fun fact:

The Hungarian version of "I have absolutely no idea" is "halványlila gőzöm sincs"

Which literally translates into

"I don't even have light purple steam" [about this]

FB keeps advertising a "Lewd D&D" rulebook for me. "Adventures for Couples."

Dude. All the couples I know already play D&D together.

In the 10th century, Persian traveler Buzurg ibn Shahriyar wrote in his book about a jinn market located in Kashmir.

According to local informants the jinn marketplace was located in luscious gardens among running streams. The jinn could be heard around the gardens buying and selling, but no one ever saw them.

Sadly he doesn't record more than that. Even though, it sounds like a fascinating setting for a story. 🧞 🧞‍♀️

Very relatable from Hungary:

The hero, on his way home from meeting the fairy princess, stops to go to the bathroom, and accidentally drops the magic item she'd given him into the toilet.

Hi, I'm a professional storyteller, and here's today's PSA:

"Folktale language" only sounds archaic because many stories were written down and thus canonized a century ago.

Folktales in a living oral tradition always used contemporary language.

Case in point: a Hungarian folktale I just read, collected recently, that opens with "So, there was this king, and he managed to knock up a handmaid."

For those of you who have a soft spot for Cassandra in Greek mythology:

There is at least one Classical source that claims that she survived, and that she - along with her twin brother Helenus, her mother Queen Hecuba, and Hector's widow Andromache - started a new life in Chersonesus.

There's your happy ending for today.

I'm reading South American indigenous folk stories.
In the "fire theft" legends of the Mocoví the villain who hogs all the fire is the viscacha.

Usually in these legends the fire-hogging creature - that a clever thief has to outwit - is a giant, or a monster, or a predator of some sort.

But the Mocoví decided to go with this guy.
(And honestly, he looks so done with everyone's BS, I can see why)

December 15.
Anansi and sorrel

Jamaica. Anansi the spider-trickster wants to go to Christmas market but he has nothing to sell. He picks some roselle buds to barter. But since he's a well known troublemaker people think he's up to no good, and start chasing him.
Fleeing, Anansi dumps the roselle into a cauldron and the water turns red. People taste it and realize Anansi has a good thing. They add their own ingredients... and they invent sorrel together.

A roselle (hibiscus) plant. Long stalks with narrow, bright green leaves and thick, deep red flower buds. Photo from Wikimedia.
