Ok, but like… You’re talking about people who’d waste money on buying a “cyber” truck in the first place. At that point it’s like people buying Apple products; it’s less about having the best possible version of the thing and more about having something from Tesla/Musk.

Me and some friends were discussing about all the layoffs we were hearing about from every major game publisher, and the tech world in general.

Major layoffs, that is, despite also reporting good profits. Record high profits, in some cases.

I said it might me likely due to these companies looking to replace a portion of their workers with AI. Looks like I was right.

So, hey, isn’t this like that one time where you guys thought he had no way of winning but kinda sorta won anyway?

Tattorack,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. I’m running Ubuntu and I have recently changed the desktop environment from Gnome to KDE.

DDG seems to still function nicely. And I’ve never stopped using bookmarks. Didn’t know people weren’t using bookmarks anymore… I mean, what do you? Search for the same website you frequently use or just make a button that can do it in one click?

DuckDuck Go took getting used to for me due to it lacking all the convenient algorithms from Google that… used to in the past… contribute to getting better search results.

The lack of these conveniences is why I switched to DDG years ago in the first place. I realised Google was essentially helping everyone build their own Internet echo chambers and I didn’t want to be part of that.

It does mean you actually need to be good at searching for what you want because DDG is very bad at “guessing”.

Or to put it differently; I call you complaints skill issues. :)

I’ve managed to switch from GNOME to KDE, removing GNOME afterwards, and it was quite painless.

KDE 6 isn’t available yet, though. The first one to get the new KDE is the distro it’s made for, so Arch, I think. Everyone else gotta wait, and it could be a while.

I don’t get people who drink tea with a fuckton of sugar. At tyst point it’s damn near impossible to to even taste the actual tea anymore.

As someone who didn’t have a computer and had to install everything on a USB drive at some point, I absolutely LOVE portable .exe’s. Don’t see why anyone would have a problem with it. Don’t see a problem with aopimages either.

Tattorack,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Both, actually. Genes and experiences are both responsible for elements inside human behaviour.

Likewise. Basically can’t see anything rainbow like anywhere without immediately assuming it has something to do with gay.

And everyone else assumes this too, so one can’t use a rainbow for something anymore either without everyone else assuming you’re making a statement.

Groups of multiple OS’s will henceforth be called OS’s’s (pronounced “oh-essessess”).

Both community and content are created by people. If people come here there will be community and there will be content.

Tattorack,

Yes, I agree. And it needs to be open bloody source!!

Tattorack,

I haven’t yet. Sounds like I should add to that statistic.

Sorry, I don’t smoke. No, not even in code form.

I’m 30 years old and still don’t have my own apartment. Being rendered homeless in your teenage years fucking sucks, and things onæy seem to get progressively more inaccessible.

The same answer to both:

Religious indoctrination.

I’m really bothered by this line of thinking.

Just because something “looks” like it is a certain way doesn’t mean it is. For anything to be considered fact there needs to be evidence. The hypothesis that the Earth may have plate tectonics existed decades before it became fact.

This leads people to make connections between completely unrelated things, despite scientists, or professionals working in fields of science (i.e. doctors), saying, and often proving, there is none.

The robot dystopia will not be caused by evil AI enslaving humanity.

No matter how advanced or how self aware, AI will lack the ambition that is part of humanity, part of us due to our evolutionary history.

An AI will never have an opinion, only logical conclusions and directives that it is required to fulfil as efficiently as possible. The directives, however, are programmed by the humans who control these robots.

Humans DO have ambitions and opinions, and they have the ability to use AI to enslave other humans. Human history is filled with powerful, ambitious humans enslaving everyone else.

The robot dystopia is therefor a corporate dystopia.

I always roll my eyes when people invoke Skynet and Terminator whenever something uncanny is shown off. No, it’s not the machines I’m worried about.

I don’t get it. I wouldn’t need to have Linux preinstalled. I could just get… Literally any laptop and then only ever boot up Windows to download my preferred distro, if I don’t already have a USB ready.

In my experience, unless it’s the professional version of windows, laptops with windows tend to be a little cheaper than blank laptops. Pretty sure Microsoft actually pays manufactures to use Windows.
