This was a really interesting look into the ways that board game mechanics can represent real-world systems in a way that provokes understanding or empathy.
There were also a couple of references to Gloomhaven that really made me laugh:
In 2021, researchers analyzed the ten thousand games with the highest rankings on the Web site BoardGameGeek, and found that, between 2000 and 2020, the average number of mechanics in new games had increased from roughly two and a half to four. The 2017 game Gloomhaven, which held the highest rating on the site for years, utilizes nineteen mechanics.

“Not everybody enjoys killing monsters in dungeons,” said Isaac Childres, the designer of Gloomhaven, which is about killing monsters in dungeons.
This video really made me realize how disconnected I’ve gotten from the top 40. I’m not one of those that is gonna go on a diatribe about pop not being real music, people are allowed to like whatever they like and music doesn’t have to be complicated or deep to be good. But I hadn’t realized how little I was listening to the radio these days. A decade ago I would have still probably been listening to radio stations in the car most days and so I would have some exposure to the top 40 as I was switching between stations, but I didn’t recognize a single song on this list, with the exception of the two really controversial ones - which I only recognized because I saw some of the backlash against them. I also noticed that Todd pointed out several times how much less it takes these days to get a song on the top 40. I wonder if that is because of how fractured the general listening public has gotten as radio has less sway when it comes to making hits. If anybody has any articles/videos on that I’d love to see them.
I can sympathize. I’m not sure I agree with you that Hbomb did anything wrong, but I did leave that video feeling pretty shitty in general. With the Tommy Tallarico thing it was so absurd and Tallarico is such a huge figure that it was just kind of funny, but this last video felt like watching somebody’s life being dismantled. It needed to be done, because Somerton was hurting folks and being dishonest. And I’m not sure that somebody with less clout than Hbomberguy could have done it. There were several examples of smaller creators calling Somerton out with little to no effect other than getting backlash from Somerton’s fans. But honestly the whole thing just kind of made me feel sad, I didn’t get much satisfaction out of it.
Yeah I’m with you, I don’t think there was a better way to do this (and it needed to be done). I don’t think Hbomberguy did anything wrong. But the whole episode has just left me (personally) feeling bad and I don’t love how much joy some folks seem to be getting watching somebody get taken apart. Not accusing anybody in this thread of that, I’ve just seen it in other places.
I’m not sure that I agree that we should dehumanize people just because the do something wrong or commit a crime. I think all sorts of people deserve sympathy, even those that have done wrong. I’m not saying at all that Somerton shouldn’t have to face the consequences of his actions or that what is happening to him is worse than what he did to others, but I don’t think that justice and empathy are mutually exclusive.
I worked for many years (hundreds of hours) locating, remastering and uploading content for a fan-based YouTube channel named ‘R.E.M. Archive’. I did 99% of the work and was happy to do this for the huge fan base. I believe the channel existed for about 6 years or so....
Dude, “from the data he provided” is a screenshot of a concert video from Nov 9, 1998 in Stockholm Sweden which (based on a quick search and look through their website) the “REMVideoArchive” site/channel you linked hasn’t uploaded. Neither was an official channel, the one you linked says in their about section that they’re a fansite that archives R.E.M. footage. Don’t accuse somebody of impersonating someone or stealing their work when you have zero evidence of it, that’s absolutely wild that you would do that.
I’m trying to expand my library of classic game/game-inspired music. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I’m including some music that I particularly enjoy for reference....
I don’t know how “pure” you want your chiptunes to be, but for my money Master Boot Record is some of the best stuff out there. I would definitely say it’s at the very least gaming inspired if not pure chiptunes, and it kicks all kinds of ass. They’ve done a lot of covers of classic game music - Bloody Tears is a great one, as well as their cover of the Doom theme. But I really love their original stuff too. Internet Protocol is a 10/10 album to me.
Slightly less chiptunes but still absolutely gaming inspired is their side project Keygen Church. Tenebre Rosso Sangue from the Ultrakill soundtrack is probably their best known track. It’s sort of a chiptunes adjacent castlevania-metal vibe? It’s hard to describe but it absolutely destroys.
Yeah IMO the more famous and respected Kojima has gotten, the worse his writing has been. And I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, he badly needs editors. I think it’s kind of like George Lucas in that they have a lot of ideas, some of which are really good and some of which are absolutely batshit. Sometimes those types of writers need someone who can ground them and tell them that they don’t have to put all of their ideas in.
Totally expect to see a sea of “Nazi Sympathizer” comments, but look. I don’t think we should be Doxxing anyone so that we don’t invite folks to Doxx us....
The Vice article was a news article that was reporting on this leak, but it didn’t name any names and didn’t link to the leaked database. The post in question also wasn’t a beehaw post, it was a federated post from lemmy.ml. Maybe I’m misunderstanding how federation works, but I would expect lemmy.ml’s mods to handle moderating those posts.
And, frankly, I’m not sure I disagree with the screenshot you posted elsewhere in this thread. I don’t think it was wrong for a person to leak the IronMarch forum database a few years ago, which exposed a bunch of Atomwaffen members in the US and neo-nazis elsewhere, and I’m not sure I think it’s wrong for someone to have leaked this db either.
This isn’t “it’s okay to dox people you disagree with” or calling people with different political opinions nazis. These are actual nazis.
@Scary_le_Poo and @jarfil: if the two of you have a disagreement on another thread, please work it out between the two of you like adults there; don’t spill it over into other, unrelated threads.
@Scary_le_Poo, these types of personal attacks are not acceptable on beehaw. It is possible to disagree while still being kind and without resorting to angry or abusive language. Please try to remember beehaw’s guiding principal when interacting with others in the future.
Hi, can you clarify what you mean or provide a source? I’m not away of any widespread examples of this but it could be that I’m misunderstanding or misremembering.
I’ve been playing Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria with a group of friends. It’s pretty janky at times, but the vibe is pretty fun and we’re all LotR nerds to some degree, so it’s been fun arguing about where the devs were lore friendly and where they colored outside the lines. It’s also nice to play a survival crafting game like this that has no PvP so the balancing can be entirely based on PvE play, which means the grind isn’t anywhere near the level of Ark or Conan. I’d say it’s a more janky little brother of Grounded with a LotR coat of paint and some pretty cool level design.
I got to play Apiary last week and really enjoyed it, although we got a rule wrong having that I think probably would have had a pretty significant effect on the flow of the game.
I also played a game of Tyrants of the Underdark last night that was really interesting. Because of the decks we used there were almost no cards that generated influence, which led to spies and assassination (plus discard) being the main way we were interacting with each other. It was neat how drastically the marketplace deck affected how the game went.
Hi @lolcatnip, we have one rule on Beehaw: Be(e) Nice. If you disagree with another user feel free to express why, but low effort, drive-by insults aren’t really in the spirit of this instance.
So this is a bit of a meta-question. I was going to post a question about tech (for context I am looking for a tablet/iPad to read journal papers) so I headed to the technology community. But all the posts are news articles and the description is along the lines of ‘post happenings and innovations in tech…’ so I chickened...
Hey, https://beehaw.org/c/technology mod here. We mostly get tech news and articles, but personally I have no issues with questions or self posts that promote discussion. Some communities do have more guidelines about how and what to post but !technology is fairly lax as long as the post is tech related and not spammy.
All that to say, please feel welcome to post your question there and see what folks recommend.
Hi @Leafeytea - I’ve removed this comment because a lot of folks are reading it as threatening toward Meta employees. I don’t want to assume that’s your intention, though. If you’d like, shoot me a DM or reply here and I will restore the comment if you would like to edit it to clarify what you meant.
Why the US is falling behind- a lack of R&D, particularly around computers, emerging technologies, and education. And how we are starting to reinvest in critical R&D again for things like vaccines and chips....
I can pretty much guarantee that on beehaw at least, at least one mod will look at any report. As far as what the mod action would be, I think it would depend on the situation. For misinformation that is deceptive and harmful in some way, we have and likely would continue to remove it. For something that is not intending to be deceptive and/or isn’t actively harmful, I think I would be more inclined to leave it up and leave it to the community to hash out in the comments. For example, I’d be likely to remove disinfo about Covid vaccines or conspiracy theories about 5g or something, but I probably wouldn’t remove a post just because somebody called Linux an OS instead of “GNU plus Linux” or something. But that’s just how I would tend to treat this sort of thing. For most mod actions that aren’t straightforward, we tend to try and discuss them and get multiple perspectives.
Mod tools weren’t a priority the last time we heard anything from the Lemmy devs about it. It’s possible that has changed since then but I doubt it.
We have had a few people from beehaw working on contributing some things, but from what I have gathered (as someone who isn’t a software engineer) the lemmy codebase is very difficult to work with.
