It’s considered a slur when you call a person that who doesn’t associate with the term. It’s no different from going around calling straight people gay. Do we or do we not respect people’s right to choose what they indentify as? It’s not like you get automatically banned for using the term. Context matters.

This article also seems to conveniently ignore the fact that all the actual slurs are considered slurs on Twitter aswell. It’s also an obviously and openly biased opinion article intented to provoke rage rather than objectional journalism.

Of all the social media platforms Lemmy seems like the least likely place for me having to speak against misgendering people. Can you really not imagine how a transgender person would feel when the term CIS is forced upon them from the outside?

Yeah it’s not a slur just like the words male and female aren’t either but they can be used with the intention to insult when directed at people not identifying as such.

I don’t agree with labeling the term as such but I do agree with the core intention which is to prevent harrasment. I don’t quite see what the issue is here. This will not cause trouble to anyone using the term appropriately.

How can you know? Just because a person looks and acts male it doesn’t mean that’s how they feel inside. There are plenty of closeted trans people that would find that offensive. And what does it even matter? If a person doesn’t want to be labeled then any decent person would respect that wish instead doubling down and calling them “cissy” instead.

I don’t think it necessarily matters even if the label technically does apply to them. I can very well imagine a black person for example taking issue with someone bringing attention to their skin color. Not because they’re not indeed black but because they don’t want to be described in a way that might diminish other features about them that they actually take pride over.

Or in my personal case while I’m technically part of LGBTQ I still don’t want to be associated with what I consider a political movement and when asked I’d wish not to be described in that way and would absolutely be offended with people dismissing my request and labeling me as such nevertheless. Labels often are inaccurate and overly simplifying so plenty of people rather describe themselves with sentences rather than abbreviations/generalizations.

The point isn’t really wether it’s a correct term or not but ignoring the wish to not be called that and instead doing so with the intention to insult.

Yeah but if a person asks not to be called that but does not elaborate on why, then there’s a chance that they may not identify as such and forcing that label on them is then potenttially misgendering them. There’s plenty of closeted trans people living their lives pretending to be someone they’re not.

I’m against death penalty even for the most heinous crimes for several reasons but the main one being that you’ll never going to get a justice system that’s 100% accurate in their convictions. Jailing an innocent person is already awful enough but just imagine the sense of injustice when sitting on a death row for a crime you didn’t commit. This is an issue especially on cases that provoke strong emotional reactions on people. The default is to believe those accusations and defending yourself just makes one seem more guilty. The mere accusation of rape can already ruin a person’s life let alone when the victim is a child.

The prevelance of social media makes many fringe groups seem much more numerous than they really are. I’d be willing to bet that racism is on the decline but now the actual racists have a platform to make their voices heard and there’s also the fact that a ton of people get accused of being a racist who infact aren’t but the masses are willing to take these accusations at face value especially when the target is a person they already don’t like. The term itself has suffered a major inflation in the past decade or so.

The main issue I personally have with the idea of an AI friend that you can talk with, no matter how convincing, is that I’ll always know that it doesn’t actually care. I’ve noticed this same thing with chat-GPT; it might ask me questions about a subject I’m passionate about and in a normal situation could easily spend hours rambling of. With AI it just seems pointless. I’m not teaching it anything it doesn’t already know of and I’m painfully aware that it just pretends to be interested.

I really don’t mind that it’s not actually another human, I just want it to actually behave like an human and not just pretend. I really don’t know how to solve this. I guess we need an AI that actually knows less than our current models.

I mean it doesn’t really matter wether they actually care or not as long as they’re convincing enough that you think it does. However with LLM you know the lights aren’t on so no matter how convincing it is it still wouldn’t make a difference. Interestingly though if you don’t know you’re talking with LLM then it’s a different case. Maybe to actually have a fulfilling relationship with AI you need to be somehow tricked into thinking it’s consciouss even if it’s not.

Yeah that’s true aswell. I guess I was thinking something like if I had an AI friend I probably wouldn’t want it to know everything there’s to know about mountain biking because I’d much prefer it asking me things about bikes and stuff and it actually mattering how well I can explain it back to it. I wouldn’t want it to act curious as if it didn’t know but then in the next sentence demonstrating it knows more than I do. I think that especially for men it’s important to bond over solving problems together and figuring things out. It’s different to be an expert on one field but if you know literally everything about everything then it’s just more like an assistant/search engine.

Even in that case they would still be consciouss individuals. I’m not sure if “caring” is even the the correct term here. For example I talk to my pet gerbils despite the fact that I know they don’t care. They don’t even understand a single thing I’m saying. It doesn’t matter. They’re still individuals with personalities that have some sort of an subjective experience of the world. They look back at me and know I’m there and I know they can hear my voice too.

This is not the case with LLM. There’s no one there. Not only does it not care it doesn’t even know you exist. Talking to it is not talking to an individual. It’s like asking a group of scientists how they’re doing today. Any reply you’re going to get back is completely meaningless so why bother even asking?

I think it’s cosciousness that’s the relevant factor here. You need to atleast get the sense of talking to something that can experience things even if it was infact not consciouss. Otherwise it’s just a more advanced version of a stereo that is programmed to say “hello” when you turn it on.

Takes quite a bit of mental acrobatics if that’s the conclusion one pulls out from that. That’s motivated reasoning and partisan thinking. I seriously doubt even he is dumb enough to suggest for someone to use nuclear weapons literally on their back yard. That doesn’t make any sense. What he said is stupid as it is. No need to start making shit up.

It’s attached by two “leashes” and if you yank it a bit the other rips off making it pretty much what you described but it’ll still tangle all over your face when you try to drink straight from the bottle and also now you have the sharp bit poking you every time you screw and unscrew the cap. This is not the only design we have. I just happen to shop at LIDL and their bottles are all like this. Some other designs are slightly better.

Mid-size city in Finland. I moved away after my relationship ended because 740€/month was too expensive for a single person to pay. The single room apartment in the middle of the city I had before that was around 450€/month.
