TimBoote, to Birding

This is so true. I’ve been an environmentalist my whole adult life, but has given me a connection and depth of knowledge that I struggled to acquire previously.

“For many birdwatchers who have adopted the hobby in adulthood, there is a strong delineation of life before being a birdwatcher, and life afterwards. I think this is because changes the way you look at the world. Intentionally placing your attention outward to your surrounds becomes habitual. That’s the joy of this hobby. “

“Academics Soroush Vosoughi and Deb Roy, both of the MIT Media Lab, along with MIT Sloan professor Sinan Aral, recently conducted a study that reached the conclusion that false news spreads faster than the truth. "AI models don’t contain reality. They rely on the complex statistical abstraction of digital data. This limits their real-world creative significance and their capacity to produce “eureka” moments.

To differentiate AI-driven creativity from old-fashioned creativity, I have proposed a new term: generic, or g-type, creativity. It formalises the fact that while AI models are capable of provoking new thought, they are limited by the underlying data they have been trained on."

Real talk: I think a lot of "return to office" executives are just people who never learned to type quickly enough to use Slack comfortably.

TimBoote,

@seldo @eichin @mcc Likewise. Learning to touch type in my early 20s set me up in the late 1980s for what was about to come. At school only girls were allowed to learn type… imagine the school’s reasoning back then.

“In contrast, the claims made to support the “no” case are largely misleading. Many of the claims simply ignore the existence of contrary facts and history.”
