@WMan22@silversword.online

I'm WMan (pronounced double-u man), My interests are VR, Linux, Video Games, Music, Anime, Action media, and Quality of Life; Not just quality of life in software, QoL in everything. If you can tell me about something that will uncomplicate things and/or make a facet of everyday life more efficient and painless, I'm interested. I find a lot of that on github these days.

Looks like nobody is interested in $3500 headset… https://www.macrumors.com/2024/04/23/apple-cuts-vision-pro-shipments/

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@darth I'm actually a huge VR enthusiast, like, I'm above a majority of people when it comes to VR interest, in fact it's the one reason I even still dual boot windows instead of just going full linux.

Even I wouldn't pay $3500 for a headset. It could literally perform fellatio on me and I'd still think it wasn't worth $3500. When I think $3500, I think "oh cool, New bed/I can buy a used Buick Century for myself".

Do you consider borrowing the same as pirating them? If not, then what do you think the negative effect of pirating is?

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@darth We used to just do "borrowing", it was called going to hollywood video and renting a game, $5 for 5 days with it.

As for pirating, I think at least enough people have to crack for archival due to bad DRM, but only partake in piracy after a game is no longer being sold anywhere and has become effectively abandonware, where it becomes fair to play free.

Unless you're streaming services, where you chop up one series across 5 different services, each worse than the last, in which case, F U.

When people who have a different opinion from mine mute me because they cannot handle opinions different than theirs, is it okay if I mute them back? I love a good argument, but talking to a wall is not my thing. I am on Fediverse because I like the conversation.

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@darth I've quietly muted plenty of people without telling them just because I'm here to enjoy and talk about my hobbies and a few oddities thus want to avoid political discussion at all costs especially since it's unproductive. I have a wordfilter that is 109 keywords long just to do this.

It's okay to curate your own experience.

WMan22,

I mean, how many internet arguments have actually made the world a better place, I can't think of any. So yeah, it's unproductive.

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@darth at least when I run it in VMWare Workstation, yeah. I was trial running it because I had the thought of:

"what if I baremetal debian for stability, but do most of my system operations in an Arch Linux distrobox?"

Partake in media that has shit fanbases. It doesn't mean you have to associate with said fanbase or even be ashamed that you like the same thing they do, but the reason they're shitty is because they're passionate enough about the media to infight with one another and be obnoxious about it. Not naming names, your imagination is doing the work.

I don't know about you but I'd take that any day over the uniting ideology surrounding something being "I can't fucking stand this, I hate this so much".

I'm a tech enthusiast, I know a lot of advancements in tech, especially in the open source space, are never a question of why, but why not.

But really, there's a lot of why and not a lot of why not when it comes to the case of building humanoid Like, if you're going to do it for assisting around the house, there's better form factors than humanoids that can be easily knocked over. Combat? Same case. Manufacturing? Same story. Surveillance? Smartphones. Social? A screen+audio works.

Trying out #PopOS #Linux today. I really appreciate the auto tiler window management, and the system seems to run pretty well out of the box on my RTX 3060M card (until I tried to use Pop Wayland and watched steam freak out all over my monitors), but it's painful to have to manually add and modify GRUB to dual boot from a separate drive and also I'm still really not a fan of how claustrophobic GNOME feels.

I would rather just get the auto-tiler, dGPU, and super key menu configurations in KDE.

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

Additionally, it would be nice if apt get actually saw distrobox in its default repos on PopOS, and if nala was installed by default since it is much prettier than apt get, though granted, I recognize that pop is not really made for terminal users coming from arch like myself.

I'll stick on this distro for a while since it's gone better than OpenSUSE, but I feel like the search for a stable "Just works out of the box (and also suits my needs)" distro is still ongoing.

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@rootcompute See the thing is, you can put KDE plasma on it, I've already done this, but I think that there are features innate to Pop Desktop's modified GNOME that I don't want to trash entirely, it's not an all or nothing thing for me, the super key menu that's similar to (or probably is just literally) Rofi is something I like a lot, I like the auto tiler, I like all the sane defaults, it's just minor tweaks I'd want and Pop would reach "Ideal distro" territory.

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@rootcompute I recognize what the GNOME developers are doing and respect it, they want a unified design language, an efficient workflow, and a small list of anomalies to track. I hate to use GNOME, but I "get it"; Like an opinion you can see the pragmatism behind but simply don't agree with. I just want my desktop to not look like a cross between a mac and a smartphone, and I want DRM leasing for VR.

Anyway, if you install KDE, expect some (fixable) things to happen to Pop-Desktop.

Never mind, Tumbleweed kinda sucks so far. I remember why I stopped trying to use it.

-Proprietary Nvidia drivers are a clusterfuck of information, and sudo zypper install-new-recommends --repo NVIDIA as per the manual doesn't work even though I added the repo
-They make you make your own bash script for prime-run after you install suse-prime
-Applications I install don't make shortcuts in KDE
-I had to use a GUI to install cause the repo isn't in by default

Oh well.

I really hope I get that call back today after the interview, my ambivert ass is one of those weirdos that actually likes work cause it gives clarity, purpose, and stability to my life, and if I just stay at home all day it feels like being in a hamster cage where I do the same shit every single day.

Not that I wouldn't be doing the same shit every day at a job, but at least I'd be getting paid to run on a hamster wheel and can upgrade that hamster cage's furniture with the money I get.

I feel like a fucking idiot for not trying on sooner. My god, I can just... pick a distro with sane out of the box defaults but do all the obtuse shit I want to do with and the AUR.

I know I'm super late on this but I feel like a caveman discovering fire.

If I had any complaint with it, it's that it is a hassle to do this thing where you can add it to your login manager with a desktop environment like a VM. Should just be a regular command. https://github.com/89luca89/distrobox/blob/main/docs/posts/run_latest_gnome_kde_on_distrobox.md

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@mforester I main arch but I've been getting tired of using it for a while and bloating packages, or having to set up sane defaults any time I reinstall it on a new PC. The AUR has a better version of some stuff that I can get on other distros (like ani-cli-git from the AUR, which is the most consistently stable version of it), and is generally a very accessible, easy way to get programs.

If I feel as if something's gotten too messy, I can just delete it and start over from a previous export.

WMan22, to linuxgaming
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

Since getting into 2 years ago I keep trying all these other linux distros but keep coming back to Arch Linux simply because the other distros give me some kind of problem that arch or a variant of it like EndeavourOS just doesn't.

I don't understand, because Arch is supposed to be like, a "beta tester distro" or like, prone to frequent breakage, but it just hasn't been for me outside of the times glibc breaks DT_HASH for Easy Anticheat, but that's a glibc thing not an arch thing.

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@mforester I can't stand GNOME and variants of it like the one Pop!_OS has, it reminds me too much of a smartphone interface combined with a mac, which is the opposite of what I want. If they had a KDE Plasma/XFCE version I'd use it.

I'm considering getting an immutable distro and then setting up an arch linux distrobox for gaming, because pretty much the only reason I even consider switching off arch is when I feel like I have too much package/dependency clutter and want to start from 0.

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@mforester I would hold off on Bazzite, I'm currently facing audio issues with it. Bazzite would be my favorite distro in the way it's structured if it like... didn't have any issues for me at the moment. https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite/issues/785

Did you guys try any game in the Steam Next Fest this month?

WMan22,
@WMan22@silversword.online avatar

@boilingsteam I love next fest to death, I think it's one of the greatest achievements valve has ever had (Yes, I'm including half life and steam deck in this) since I always come away with at least 2 more games in my wishlist, but 7 days is not enough to play all the demos, it should really be extended to 2-4 weeks. There was a lot I wanted to play but had to deal with some pretty serious IRL bullshit so I only got to play like 3 demos this month.

Hey game publishers/developers, can you like, NOT use licensed music in games if you don't plan to perpetually renew the fucking license? Thanks.

    @darth "in the EU"

    I honestly find it bizarre that this is even a problem to be solved for iPhone users to begin with, on android all I have to do is just enable "install unknown apps" and bam, instantly using Aniyomi, Grayjay, and F-Droid.

    That's not meant to be read as android fanboyism (cause fuck knows it has its own problems) so much as "Damn dude, iPhone users live like this? That's depressing."

    @darth I love Death Stranding and even that game needed fast travel.

    I agree with the SPIRIT behind the sentiment however; Fast travel is a feature in the Yakuza series, but I never use it, because there's just so much to see during your back and forth around the place, I think they mean something like that.

    But kamurocho is small-ish and dense, this philosophy doesn't work for big open worlds that take 30 real life minutes to go back and forth between the place.
