Anomalously high sea ice continued in the Sea of Okhotsk through all of February. But this is a region that melts out every summer, so it has little consequence for the rest of the region during the annual minimum extent

Last month averaged the 2nd lowest sea ice extent on record for the month of February.

This was 930,000 km² below the 1981-2010 average. Data from https://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index

@ZLabe I'm thinking we have already passed the Arctic Sea Ice Maximum Extent for this freeze season. What do you think?

ZLabe,
@ZLabe@fediscience.org avatar

@HapHazard Possible! But I always like to wait for more certainty before making the call, as local weather influences can be highly unpredictable this time of year.

February 2024 sea ice extent was statistically tied for the 15th lowest on record...

This was 690,000 km² below the 1981-2010 average. February ice extent is decreasing at about 2.67% per decade. Data: https://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index

Another region that has contributed to the higher sea ice cover this winter is in the Sea of Okhotsk, which has been particularly extensive compared to recent years...

sea ice extent is currently the 14th lowest on record (JAXA data)

• about 230,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 400,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 780,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,340,000 km² below the 1980s mean

Monthly mean sea ice thickness now updated through all of fall 2023 from CryoSat-2. This year is not a record low again.

Note the data length is too short to assess long-term trends, but reveals important variability. Graphic: https://zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice-volumethickness/

Weather conditions have been quite favorable for sea ice to expand in the Greenland Sea this winter. But it's also worth looking more closely into what this meant for ice export, especially of thicker ice.

@klimagarten That is very unlikely. This is just atmosphere-ocean internal variability in the climate system.

Due to contrasts in seasonality and sea ice characteristics between the two poles, there is a seasonality in global levels of sea ice extent. This year's minimum extent was well above the previous record from last year.

Last month observed a wide range in sea ice conditions along the ice edge. Large negative departures continued around the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Baffin Bay. Greater sea ice than average was found in the Greenland Sea and Sea of Okhotsk.

@ivy Scientists are still trying to pinpoint the cause of recent shifts in methane concentration trends (e.g., wetlands). Here are some articles exploring possible changes in sources/sinks during that time period: https://phys.org/news/2019-03-methane-atmosphere-surging-scientists.html & https://e360.yale.edu/features/methane_riddle_what_is_causing_the_rise_in_emissions & https://nature.com/articles/d41586-022-00312-2 & https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/150967/why-methane-surged-in-2020
