There were extremely large temperature anomalies in the highest latitudes of the Arctic in February 2024...

[Plot shows zonal-mean surface air temperature anomalies, where latitude = y-axis (not scaled by distance). Data: GISTEMPv4 using a 1951-1980 baseline]

Have a great week! Here's your Monday ice update - sea ice extent is currently the 15th lowest on record (JAXA data)...

• about 290,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 290,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 680,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,140,000 km² below the 1980s mean

Latest data: 🥺

  • Carbon dioxide (new monthly record)
  • Methane (new monthly record)
  • Nitrous oxide (new monthly record)

Last month observed the warmest temperature anomalies in the northernmost parts of the , especially close to the North Pole.

Graphic updated monthly at: https://zacklabe.com/arctic-temperatures/

ZLabe,
@ZLabe@fediscience.org avatar

@Gurre It is still well below freezing this time of year near the North Pole, so I don't think there will be any large impacts.

ZLabe,
@ZLabe@fediscience.org avatar

@Gurre Not necessarily, as very strong warm air advection events can reduce ice growth in the marginal ice zone especially. Just another reason that monitoring Arctic climate change is complicated :)

Happy Friday! Have a great weekend! Here's your latest ice update - sea ice extent is currently the 12th lowest on record (JAXA data)...

• about 70,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 490,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 850,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 1,350,000 km² below the 1980s mean

Last month observed above average sea surface temperatures around the edges of the Ocean. I just added this graphic to update for my monthly Arctic climate updates... Hope it is useful.

🚨 Update. Methane also reached a preliminary new record high value in November 2023 (1934.2 ppb).

November 2022's global methane abundance was 1923.6 ppb.

Note there is a seasonal cycle. Data available from https://gml.noaa.gov/ccgg/trends_ch4/

Yet againnnn, last month set a new record for global sea surface temperature, which was the warmest February on record...

Graphic using NOAA ERSSTv5 data (https://psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded/data.noaa.ersst.v5.html). Methods detailed in https://doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D-16-0836.1.

@zleap This period is highly uncertain due to a combination of internal variability and uncertainties in the sea surface temperature record around WWII as a result of methodological changes and a lack of observations. https://journals.ametsoc.org/view/journals/clim/34/11/JCLI-D-20-0907.1.xml

Compared to last year, recent weather conditions have contributed to an earlier increase in sea ice extent after the annual minimum was reached.

• about 20,000 km² below the 2010s mean
• about 620,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 960,000 km² below the 1990s mean

@lymphomation We cannot make any assumptions about accelerations at such short timescales due to internal climate variability which acts to temporarily slow or enhance long-term trends.
