To support the release of the latest version of Raspberry Pi Imager, that'd be version 1.8.1, which comes with much better support for configuring your installation, we've totally rewritten our Getting Started documentation. Enjoy your new ! https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/computers/getting-started.html#raspberry-pi-imager

I've seen some folks posting they've already received shipping notifications, or in some cases hardware, over the weekend. But today is the day. 5 is now available! https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/raspberry-pi-5-available-now/

It's arrived! The new @Raspberry_Pi 5
I've had chance to have a quick look this weekend and I'm impressed. I did find a slight problem with the 64-bit version of the OS, but works well with 32-bit.

We did some benchmarking with Raspberry against its younger sibling 4 to show you just how fast it can go.

@gadgetoid Nothing controversial. The Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) of the Raspberry Pi 5 implements the USB-PD standard which allows higher voltages and currents to be negotiated via software. USB-PD specification R3.1 v1.8, see Table 10-2 footnote 2 for instance "The Fixed PDOs Maximum Current field Shall advertise at least 3A, but May advertise up to RoundUp (PDP/Voltage) to the nearest 10mA. Requires a 5A cable if over 3A is advertised."

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@gadgetoid 🤷‍♂️

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@gadgetoid @wow_elec_tron It’s a USB-PD compliant supply. So you’ll need to do USB-PD things to get 5A.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@gadgetoid The thing that really annoys me is the folks that say it’s breaking the UDB-PD spec, it’s not. It’s a profile that isn’t commonly implemented, but it is compliant.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@wow_elec_tron @gadgetoid We have a blog post that’s coming up as part of our Developer Diary around that talks about the PSU. Look out for that!

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@gadgetoid “My phone charger doesn’t support it!” I guess I’m just getting tired explaining the difference between a charger and a power supply.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@gadgetoid Just wait till you see the curves on ours as it switches load. They're so pretty.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@piofthings @gadgetoid If it can negotiate 5A at 5V, yes. If it will only do 5A at other voltages, no.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@Workshopshed @gadgetoid How did you get into the office?

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@Ryanteck @gadgetoid 🤷‍♂️

@aallan I watched Adafruit try to determine what connectors the Raspberry Pi 5 uses today, and was sad to see there’s no documentation online describing the connector part numbers and mechanical positions. Can I assume those are forthcoming? Schematic, too? I see in the Pi 4 schematic, the connector part numbers aren't specified either. Would be super helpful to have that information! TIA!

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@JetForMe The connector for the UART is documented in https://datasheets.raspberrypi.com/debug/debug-connector-specification.pdf. Document includes the part number.

Debian 12 bookworm released, I just upgraded my Raspberry Pi from bullseye to bookworm, and wrote a blog about it :)

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@megamatt @fernvenue We really don't recommend you do an upgrade in place on your @Raspberry_Pi between Bullseye and Bookworm. Considering the large architectural changes between the two releases it's going to be almost impossible to have a running system coming out the other end that isn't in some way a bit broken.
