@aallan I watched Adafruit try to determine what connectors the Raspberry Pi 5 uses today, and was sad to see there’s no documentation online describing the connector part numbers and mechanical positions. Can I assume those are forthcoming? Schematic, too? I see in the Pi 4 schematic, the connector part numbers aren't specified either. Would be super helpful to have that information! TIA!

@JetForMe Product hasn't even been released yet, just announced. Yes, there is documentation coming. Not all of it will be available immediately.

I know some of you have been waiting for this one! In today's Development Diary, Eben, Gordon, and John sit down and talk about industrial design. https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/designing-the-perfect-case-and-cooling-for-raspberry-pi-5/

…and if you're interested in heating and cooling, and haven't seen it yet, go take a look at my own post on thermals from last week. https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/heating-and-cooling-raspberry-pi-5/

There are 181 lines of green on @rpilocator right now. That's 3 full pages of in-stock boards. I'm sort of calling it at this point, the days of shortage are behind us. https://rpilocator.com/?instock

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@LabSpokane @rpilocator Yup, and DigiKey ships worldwide!

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@LabSpokane @rpilocator The scalpers lost a shit ton of money, they bought above retail and now can't sell for more than they bought. The thought of them holding a bunch of boards they can't sell on for anything like what they bought for fills me with joy.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@stuart @LabSpokane @rpilocator There's no chance of there being a sale! 😂 We still sell every Pi we make, if we could make more we would.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@Sknashville @rpilocator I shared it around internally. We all had a good laugh, although I hope nobody is taken in! Still availability for the October batch! https://rpilocator.com/pi-5.cfm

Right. That’s it. I hate all of the live train time apps for British railways. I’m going to have to write my own that does it properly. Urgh.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@dans Normally it’s excellent, and I use it a lot, although I hate mucking about with a browser on my phone. But right now it’s showing my train on time when the station boards and every other app is showing it as 15 minutes delayed. Also doesn’t show reasons for delay which I know the National Rail API exposes.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@dans I’m joining it at the second stop, which is only 4 minutes down line to the train’s origin. So the reason for the delay is pretty important, because it’s not enroute yet.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@dans I was using an app that exposed the delay reason (which is why I know it must be an API field) but it was unmaintained and has just stopped working for one of the stations I use regularly (it just mysteriously dropped off the list of existing stations, while I was standing on the platform no less!)

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@dnnybrks Oh, that's an interesting one. Looks like they also have an API, so that's going to be worth digging around in as well. Thanks!

For everyone that's been saying, "Oh, what about CM4, I can't get CM4!" when I'm saying supply of is normalising, go look at https://rpilocator.com/?cat=CM4. There is plenty of CM4 in channel, yes, including the US🇺🇸 where Digikey has literally hundreds of units in stock!

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy @homeassistant There’s even some CM4S available. Which isn’t really supposed to make it out to the retail channel. 🤷‍♂️

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@Sknashville CM4 is our industrial product aimed at business, not individual users. While it is sold in retail channels, it’s possible Microcenter have just chosen not to stock it. As a bricks-and-mortar store they have limited shelf space.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@sad_electronics @geerlingguy @homeassistant The Compute Module is our industrial product, and aimed towards businesses. The CM4S was specifically designed during the supply chain shortages to fill a gap because of the shortage of CM3. The fact it's leaking into retail channels at all tells you how much things have improved, and how far out or shortage we now are!

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@burtyb @geerlingguy @homeassistant Honestly nice to see it out in the wild, I have a bit of a soft spot for CM4S for reasons.

@geerlingguy Yup! I'll poke a quick sentence into mine pointing to yours for more information where I was talking about overclocking. We were pretty pleased to see the Active Cooler wasn't sweating overclocking to 3.1GHz.

aallan,
@aallan@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy It's possible. I'm physically in the office next week, so I'll ask about and see if I can find out.
