Do you still use big tech social media?

It’s 2023 and there are more open source, decentralized social media options than ever before like Lemmy, Mastodon, and more. However, I still find myself using some big tech platforms like Twitter and Google News fairly often. While federated social networks are compelling, the content curation and discovery on platforms like...

I have a Facebook account that I log in to to host a weekly video conference, and that’s that. I won’t ever go back to centralised corporate social media as my main social media

My partner and an ex partner have both done serious injury to themselves on scooters, so I’m not sure that I’d be too unhappy if they were gone…

Aphantasia... apparently 3% of the world has it. Any aphantasists in here, who've had success improving their condition?

10 years ago, I’d have put my ability to visualise at 0 out of 10. Practice and occasional halucinogen use has got me to 2 out of 10. It causes no end of problems in day to day life, so I’m interested to hear if anyone has tips or just experiences to share so it doesn’t feel such a lonely frustrating issue....

I don’t have mental audio, and the best way I can describe it is that I can think of words, but not in words.

I think in concepts that have words attached.

So, if I’m thinking about a dog, I have multiple words that can work for it. Dog and perro (spanish for dog) for example, both point to the same “concept”, and it’s that concept that I have in my mind when I think of a dog. But I can pull the word dog to mind when needed too. Hence thinking “of” words

Either way, I can’t hear any of it

Hi! ADHD and Aphantasia here :)

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yep, exactly.

I kind of have an inner voice, in so far as I can choose to think of words in a sentence, or I can “translate” the concepts in my mind in to words in real time, but those words have no auditory components. I can’t “hear” them anymore than you can “see” an apple in your mind. I just know that it’s there

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yep, but not in a good way. I basically fall asleep whenever I’m horizontal, even if I don’t want to

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I haven’t, because it’s not really a problem unless I’m laying down. I don’t struggle with fatigue or wanting to sleep or the like. It’s just that when I lay down, I fall asleep, even if I am trying to watch a movie or talk to my partner or read…

I’ve tried stimulants over the years for my ADHD, and they all stop that problem. When they’re still active in my system, I don’t drop off simply by laying down. But I avoid taking them late in the afternoon

When you’re trans, open federation is less likely to mean “fun goofy moments” and more likely to mean constant exposure to “rampant transphobia”

For you defederation is an inconvenience. For marginalised folk, it’s the only way to let us navigate these communities without constant hate.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I hope the irony of your comment was intentional, but I suspect it wasn’t

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Which still isn’t great, because it means each user has to be exposed to enough hate that they recognise a particular instance as being a constant source of it.

It’s a great reactionary tool, but sometimes the answer needs to be proactive action, not reactive

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’d argue that sometimes the issue is what people think normal looks like. There’s a lot of folk out there that think some really awful stuff is normal

If you were given the task of addressing that, how would you go about it?

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Honestly, just try and avoid aggressively using gendered pronouns as the default. It’s not the end of the world if you do, but if you just stick with using they/them and names until you’ve had a chance to pick up on the social cues, you’ll be fine. And if it’s in a situation where no one knows anyone else, and where the social cues aren’t giving you the answer, then yeah, that’s the time to lead with your name and pronouns.

But none of it’s a big issue. Trans folk feel it when you get it wrong. We notice, but we also understand that sometimes mistakes happen, especially in a society that has taught everyone to associate pronouns and assumed gender. What’s important isn’t that you get it right every time, what’s important is that you pay attention when you get it wrong, and do your best to get it right from then on.

@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

or would that generally be regarded as, well, something akin to cultural appropriation? or as malicious adoption, like “i identify as an attack helicopter”?

It’s none of those things.

It’s more akin to pretending your name is Matt even though your name is Tom. You’re not going to offend anyone, and if it turns out that Matt feels right for you, then go for it, you’re Matt now. But if you’re not Matt, and don’t feel like Matt, then calling yourself Matt won’t achieve much for you or anyone else.

Micro as in microblog. ie, twitter like instead of the threadiverse, which is reddit like

But my body and mind know if I’ve moved enough for the day, or failed to do so.

I wonder how much of it comes down to that. I never know when my body has had enough until after the fact. I’ve ran myself in to a stress fracture without even realising that I’m hurt, because it’s so hard for me to hear what my body has to say.

So, I used TrainAsOne, which builds a dynamic plan that adjusts to your fitness levels etc.

And when it generates a workout, it exports that to my Garmin. So then when I run, the Garmin has a pace range, and it shows my average pace for that leg, updated in real time, in a nice little interface. Green when I’m within the pace band, red when I’m not.

Also, given that it only cares about your average pace for the leg, it also takes in to account your previous runs and assumes you will run something similar in terms of gradient. It also adjusts for expected heat levels etc.

It will be wrong if you move to a location with a radically different gradient profile, but even then, once you’ve run it, it will take in to account the actual gradient and your pace, so you don’t get punished for running slower on gradients

Lets just say, I have 4 years to develop that ability then :)

I’m old and I used to run at a sub elite level. My PBs are all behind me, which if nothing else, frees me from the pressure to impress random Strava users :)

I’ve banned the bot for now. If and when we get the ability to silence instead of ban, I’ll change it over to a silence, so people who want to follow repost bots can.
