@aegir@toot.wales

I live in Carmarthenshire with my husband, I make things, draw things, play with tools and techniques and enjoy my garden.

I design software for schools, doing research, systems design, illustration, ui and graphic design.

I believe things can and should be better. The economy, internet, politics, are made by humans and in our power to change, they aren’t laws of nature.

Politically left, morally Quaker-flavoured animist humanist

I’ve noticed hardly anyone seems to put content warnings on news now. At a time where it’s more needed than ever, it’s here, have some triggering shit in your timeline. So, disable boosts it is.

Conveniently enough the Guardian has put this up on how to avoid secondary trauma. Seems obvious but often hard to remember. Setting boundaries and selecting reputable news sources seems relevant to here. 😬 https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/31/distressing-images-and-videos-can-take-a-toll-on-our-mental-health-how-can-we-stay-informed-without-being-traumatised

Commentators are all “New Zealand can hold their heads high…” Their captain got sent off with a red card! That’s not “holding head high” territory.

Woohoo!

I mean, not very woohoo, it’s a boring final, but I don’t like the way England play. Dirty, cheaty.

What’s funny about being non-binary is that, to me, I’m the normal one. I think our whole thing just kind of works, no? You’re all just being silly about colors and stuff. We’re the main characters of gender, just admit it.

aegir,
@aegir@toot.wales avatar

@ryanhoulihan Same for me with ‘atheist’. People invented all this nonsense and I have to be defined by my opposition to it? No. I usually use ‘non-participant’ for that.

Ok, steady on, this isn’t Taken. It’s just some cheese.

Did squats. Didn't die. New PR!

Every damn site: “get 10% off your first order” popup covering everything the moment you get there.

There won’t be a first order because of that, fucknuts.

We should trust all this complex tech stuff, meanwhile this is the level our civilisation has got to with a “just pull the tab” easy open envelope.

aegir,
@aegir@toot.wales avatar

@nathanlovestrees It’s so rare it works! It feels like at some point we need to give up with this design and maybe use perforations? 😅

@paddyduke Yes!

Kept being nagged to go paperless on something. Opened the app for that and they’ve decided “by continuing to use this app you agree to go paperless …” is a good way to not seriously piss off a long time customer. I don’t have any choice but to use the app, so I get a thank you email as if it was a choice I’d made. I go back into the app and the “paper only” option is gone, but there’s a “paper and online” option.

Accessibility is important. I need these docs even if my net connection breaks.

@aegir@toot.wales avatar

Also getting nagged to install a smart meter. No. It’s too important to use flaky hardware with software done by a “just use npm” software sausage factory.

You know when I was a kid I was told being stubborn was a negative personality trait.

There was a thing recently like this with my Grandma where my Dad had to make a complaint that they’d not made their service accessible. She’s very old and has never used a computer, doesn’t have a mobile phone (she can barely hear the landline these days either) and is Very Tired Of All This.

“Oh, no, Mrs H, it’s very simple, you just go to our website and log in…” said to her face, in a place where anyone could just do the thing she needed for her.

aegir,
@aegir@toot.wales avatar

@paddyduke This is exactly what I’m expecting to happen. They demand I give them readings anyway, so why not do it with less tech garbage.

aegir,
@aegir@toot.wales avatar

@paddyduke Oh it has to use your own wifi!? They don’t even use the cell network for it?

aegir,
@aegir@toot.wales avatar

@paddyduke Phew. Wouldn’t want any of that shonky crap on my network.

I miss people using politics content warnings. Its just “look at the horrific shit they’re doing now” toot bombs. My mental health isn’t good enough to deal with that now.

Ah, there’s the whataboutery about the tree. Yes, we know. Shut up.

aegir,
@aegir@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 I wonder what they’re expecting to achieve with it, but I don’t think someone who understood the significance of any of it would toot like that.

Bulb goes in desk lamp. No problem! I have loads of bulbs because I’m super organised and bought more of all the ones I need! E11, E14, E27…

Wait this a bayonet fitting

aegir,
@aegir@toot.wales avatar

@James I had to look up what that was! That’s weird looking. At least B22 is the old British standard so is still common.

An unexpected thing about this garage → workshop thing is that LED versions of tube lights are mostly fittings with non-replaceable tubes. The light goes, you have to replace the fitting. Like , what the absolute wasteful end-of-world bullshit is that about?

I’ve found a couple of places selling the proper fittings, but LEDs were supposed to improve things.

Also, we always called them strip lights, but that now means those tapes with LEDs you use in cabinets.

@James It’s so unbelievably wrong-headed
