Since my career direction moves more to the futures direction, one thing that kinda bothers me is the fact that most of the professional conversation seems to be happening over at LinkedIn. But most of the conversation over there seems to be poisoned by the general vibe of the LinkedIn and I keep thinking about ways to build a community to talk about those things in here.

So the main question in my head is how I can do it or anyone here is interested in something like this?

ahmetasabanci,
@ahmetasabanci@mastodon.social avatar

I want to do something like this for two main reasons.

First one is to build alternative spaces and communities to think and work on futures, especially in a critical sense, and to do that in a place that’s more fitting to it. Sure, LinkedIn has some importance in a professional sense but that also leaves little space for that kind of futures work.

ahmetasabanci,
@ahmetasabanci@mastodon.social avatar

@adamgreenfield ahahaha, I ended up deciding to go with critical futurist as well, big thanks to Johannes Kleske, who even encouraged me to use it. :)

Not sure if I can find but while trying that, I just decided to try creating as well because that’s who I am. :) Not sure if I end up creating bunch of TAZ or one with a long life. Guess I don’t have to say that you are more than welcome to join anything I try. 👊🏼

Sometimes I wish I had enough free time to create an annoying alt account to mess with the reply guys and their kind, because some of you insist on not learning how to be a decent human being online and communicate with other people. Maybe tasting your own medicine will help.

    Yo, @dymaxion -- are you aware of any good (and not-too-technical) work on data (gathering, structure, formatting, management) as pertaining to migration that you could point me toward? Or of someone better suited to answer that question than yourself?

    @Daojoan I’m usually just using its own PDF export but heard good things about Obsidian Enhancing Export plugin. It also seems to be actively maintained.

    @tchambers AFAYK, has there been any Threads API or federation news in last month?

    @shoq @tchambers Mosseri posted this one three weeks ago saying they’re planning to achieve early fediverse progress in the next few months. I haven’t seen anything else yet. https://www.threads.net/

    How much better designed are Airpods than knockoff brands?

    Lumafield took CT scans of them all to see

    Their verdict: Apple's engineering is much more tightly packed -- allowing for bigger and possibly safer batteries, and better-quality audio components

    (I'm still afraid to buy them because I know I'll immediately lose them 😅 )

    @clive I was also afraid of it too but after the day one, putting it immediately back to the case has become a natural habit.

    I only lost a bud one time and it was because one of my brother’s cats knocked it out of the table when we weren’t around and one of the buds flew under the couch. 😄

    If you have any doubts about the corruption allegations against the NYC mayor Adams, you can safely assume it true because all of the pro-government media in Turkey completely ignores the news.

    ahmetasabanci,
    @ahmetasabanci@mastodon.social avatar

    “Federal authorities are investigating whether Mayor Eric Adams, weeks before his election two years ago, pressured New York Fire Department officials to sign off on the Turkish government’s new high-rise consulate in Manhattan despite safety concerns with the building, three people with knowledge of the matter said.”

    DO NOT BOOST THIS I DON'T NEED MORE ANSWERS

    So ... our 42" Panasonic TV (mostly used by @feorag) turns out to be over 12 years old and only does 1080p. We probably want a 4K screen in our near future, as a dumb display for the 4K Apple TV box. Can go to 55", maybe larger (we need to measure the niche). Won't touch Samsung, Sony, or anything that refuses to work without an internet connection. How are LG these days?

    ahmetasabanci,
    @ahmetasabanci@mastodon.social avatar

    @cstross @feorag afaik LG is one of the best options around. Ours is also getting old and all the options we found so far are LG models. People I know are also generally happy with theirs as well.

    So I know I'm pretty late to this particular party, but that German series, Dark? Holy crap, that's some clever writing. Myself and L____ are nearly at the end of the first season, and I'm still really engaged with it. So many of the temptations around a time-hole plot gimmick successfully avoided! The urge to explain and infodump largely suppressed! The cinematography, always expressing the nominative determinism of the whole thing! The cast of deeply melancholic and miserable rural Germans!

    ahmetasabanci,
    @ahmetasabanci@mastodon.social avatar

    @PaulGrahamRaven In case you haven’t watched Mr Robot had the same impact on me with its directing and scenario, and I feel like it’s one of the real gems which doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.

    (Btw I totally agree Dark wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t made in Europe. Plus we never managed to finish the first episode of Stranger Things but can easily rewatch Dark today.)

    Helpfully left myself a note in my thesis draft last night to "Continue here with a cite of IM and brief summary", the only problem being: I can't for the life of me remember who 'IM' is!!

    (Best guess so far is that it's 'Ian Bogost', and my fat fingers managed to hit not just the key to one side of the B, but the one two spaces along)

    One thing I noticed about the most active Bluesky users and people hyping it is that they just want to recreate Twitter before Musk, without actually realizing how many problems it had or doing anything meaningful to make something better than that.

    I wonder how long does it take for them to realize what kind of place they’re building. Or whether Bluesky will ever become something more than that.
