LA has a British - Cantonese popup pie shop called.. Dai Pie Dong

Ahahahahaaha

(Dai Pai Dong means outdoor street stirfry food. Colonial era Chinese British food with Indian flavors was definitely a thing of the empire. My grandfather’s comfort food was he was dying was, ‘hand pie with chicken curry’)

@skinnylatte I read these posts and wish I could follow you around and have you point at things I should eat. Maybe it could be a food tour?

If you think having the body of a man makes you a man, then you have absolutely no clue what it feels like to wake up every day in a body that does not match who you are.

I was raised as a man I was asked to conform and tried to conform. The only thing it has achieved is depression and that feeling of having to perform a daily lie to satisfy others.

I am way too old to worry about what others may think of me, and way too old to apologize to anyone for being myself. It took me more than 30 long years to unpack all of this, so if all you have to say is you have the body of a man that is who you are...

Please do me a favor and keep your mouth shut because you have no idea what you are talking about. And does any of this make me less relevant to talk about the subject of this account?

This is who I am and part of my journey to master the art of composting. If I had to make an analogy it would be a little bit like saying hey the pile stinks bad, well never mind put it on the soil anyway.

It is never good to assume things on a topic you have not experienced before.

@compost I am and have been happy to follow you on your journey. Following you here on Mastodon has kept the topic of composting and soil at the top of my mind for the past year or two. I've learned a few things too. I appreciate that. I hadn't given a whole lot of thought to who's behind this anonymous account. But it's easy to guess that you're passionate, kind, and an exemplar of a dozen different good qualities. I'm sorry that someone made you feel the need to make this post. Boo to them.

Does anybody have a suggestion for somewhere in to get a good masala that isn't just made with a shelf-stable carton of concentrate?

@joe Feels like Rishi's got that place sewn up. Maybe an Indian restaurant? If I were you, I'd be looking up recipes.

Why aren't pictures loading on my timeline any more? I have to click through to see anything, otherwise I just get the blurs. @trumpet

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet I'm using the browser (safari).

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet It's sporadic, maybe about 10% of images are showing up. Looks like most of the people I follow are on different instances. I checked my settings and it should be fine.

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet No, seems to be fixed! Thank you!

alex_galt,

@trumpet It was still an issue this morning. I hadn't been online till 15 minutes ago.

@trumpet The blurry boxes have returned. Sad trombone. (And it happens with both my laptop using WiFi and my iPhone on LTE, for what it’s worth.)

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet Nope, no VPNs and I did check the hide media setting. This is what it looks like on my end. They will load slowly if I click on them. And today they do seem to be loading, just taking about 30 second per image.

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet On my iPhone that took about 7 seconds to fully appear. Photos like that should be pretty near instantaneous. Is anyone else having issues like this?

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet This second photo loads almost instantly. The previous one still takes a substantial amount of time.

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet Image 1 took 15 seconds and image 2 was under a second.

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@trumpet It appears to be working!

Mayan Glyphs, Kabah, Yucatán / Kodak Double-X / Kodak Retina 1b

"Breaking the Maya Code" by Michael Coe is a thrilling book to read, I recommend it. Unfortunately, I still can't read the glyphs on the side of this plinth... except for the obvious one.

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@SCampbell It's really a gorgeous book that gets into some basics of how written languages are constructed. But really it's about how people's ideas get in their own way. In the case of the Mayan written language, racism really held back the progress of the decipherment for more than a century. It's one of those books that's about something specific, but if you read it broadly, it has a lot to say about human nature.

Codz Poop, Kabah, Yucatán, Mexico, 2024

(Click for panorama, I think that's how it works).

This is a stunning 'Puuc' style structure at Kabah. It's covered in 100s of 'masks' either depicting the Mayan rain god Chaac or the "Flower Mountain." There's some academic debate on that point. These are three film images stitched in Adobe Lightroom.

Photographic Tendencies of 2023

2023 was mostly about getting reacquainted with black and white film photography. It took most of the year to just regain a level of comfort with the process. I went through several different film stocks and developers before settling on Kodak Double-X as the right film at the right price. I still haven't completely settled on a developer, for now T-Max seems to be working.

@skinnylatte @u0421793 These look great too… what a quandary. The fact that the development time is faster with rodinal might be the thing that pushes me over. Hey, having read your post, I was wondering if you’ve ever driven across the US.

It is sad to see arguments about the future of cars (EV vs ICE, rural vs. urban needs etc.) where much of the argument is about utility, at the same time so much of the auto industry marketing is about selling increased social status and/or metaphorical penis enlargement. Technology and bad urban planning are big issues, but at the end of the day I'd say it's mainly a cultural issue.

alex_galt,
@alex_galt@mas.to avatar

@Jgmeadows Very much so... everyone seems to have convinced themselves they need a truck these days. The vehicles on the road are very different than they were even 15 years ago. (Speaking from a US perspective.)

I've had a few people who came on this account and searched for contention because they were unhappy with the content.

Here are a few reminders:
This account is a personal attempt to inspire people to compost at home and help them increment practical solutions. We are not an organization or a company.
I do this FOR FREE and on my own time because that is something I love doing.

So if you happen to be too unkind and you disrespect the work being done here you will be blocked and muted.

@compost I'm sorry that's something that you've had to deal with. I appreciate what you do.
