Ok starting a new art thread for 2023! Here's the deal: a mostly daily thread with a different artist every day (sometimes I repeat from previous years if I feel like featuring other work/projects), primarily modern and contemporary since that's my thing. I'm even making a hashtag for it in case that makes it easier for folks to follow. Enjoy!

Ceramic candelabra sculpture by American artist Graham Marks, 2020s, who was an influential artist and teacher in the 70s and 80s, but left to pursue a career in healing and acupuncture. He has recently taken up clay again in work like these pieces inspired by French decorative arts.

Works by American sculptor Harriet Hosmer, 1850s-60s, known for her Neoclassical depictions of Greek and Roman mythology and history. She was one of the first professional women sculptors, spending much of her career in Rome due to restrictions on women in the US from using live models. She was also an inventor, patenting a process for making artificial marble, and designing a perpetual motion machine.

Carved marble bust of Medusa, in the middle of transforming into a Gorgon - the snakes are making their way across her hair.
Carved marble sculpture of Zenobia in chains, standing regally in a loose draped gown, wearing a crown and stepping lightly
Carved marble sculpture of a sleeping faun, a nude youth lying back against a tree stump with his legs crossed and an animal skin draped across his lap

Stoneware vessels by Danish ceramicist and illustrator Axel Salto, 1930s-50s. He was also the founder of Klingen magazine, an important proponent of Modernist and avant-garde art in Denmark from 1917-1920.

Oval-shaped ceramic vessel covered in a bulging maroon texture, with an undertone of blue and a small spout on top
Ceramic vessel with a rounded, wide shape, a rich brown shade, and forms in relief that suggest leaves and fruits bursting out of the stone

Obsessed with Buster Keaton and Sybil Seely's cubist af house in One Week.

The house after the storm, looking saggy and depleted but still wacky

I keep meaning to post more of my artwork here, will gradually be adding some of my faves in the next few weeks just so folks here can see what my deal is.

Here's a poster I made in 2020 for Greta Gerwig's Little Women, digitally illustrated using a watercolor brush effect. This was a mother's day gift for my mom, who worked in publishing her whole career before retiring a few years ago
