For decades, scammy "book doctors" and vanity presses spun a tale about how Big Publishing was too conservative and risk-averse for really really adventurous books, and the only way to get your visionary work published was to pay them to fill your garage with badly printed books that you'd spend the rest of your life trying to get other people to read:

I've got that first edition cover and I didn't notice it at first, and then I was "Wait..." Read it back in 2019

Found the second book as an ebook a couple of years ago and since have read the rest of them. Second and third books are amazing. (First and fourth books are also good, but didn't blow me away quite as much.)

I mostly just knew them for the one song on the "Brain Candy" soundtrack, but stumbled upon this album on eMusic and really liked it. It hangs together really well.

Wtf of the day so far: I finished reading a book, went to open the Goodreads app on my Kindle Fire. And all I get is a screen that says "We no longer support the Goodreads app on Fire tablet." and tells me to go to the website.

So...like...Amazon's own tablet is no longer using the app that they bought? But the website still exists, and my (old) iOS version still works...why just their very own platform? The Google Play store just says that the app is not available for this device.

Kind of pissed off because I liked having it on a portable tablet-sized device. But mostly bewildered because it makes no sense.

(And Bookwyrm has no Android app or I'd switch to that...)

Yesterday's typos found: in the same file, "Profix" and "Cashfflow".

Now I want to see the adventures of Profix the Gaul and their Cambrian friend Cashfflow. Probably they teach children facts about money.

A while back I did a project where I watched some old music videos on Youtube. I started in the A's (ABBA, AC/DC, ABC, The Adventures, etc.) and went through The Alan Parsons Project. I barely remembered the video for "Stereotomy", so I was pleasantly surprised by it. Basically, they would film a bunch of dancers and then loop a few seconds of it over and over. I found it quite striking. (As compared to the action-figure "animation" of "Don't Answer Me", which was less impressive than I'd remembered.)

Song: What About
Artist: Janet Jackson
Album: The Velvet Rope (1997)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oIGV_kxWLY

I gotta be honest, I was kinda off Janet at this point. I liked "Control" and "Rhythm Nation 1814", as a teenager, but they were a little outside my normal range. As I watched fewer and fewer videos (mostly trying to avoid rap, which I was always deeply dubious about), I just didn't hear her as much. But I did try this album from the library, and taped a few songs, and this one has grown on me over the years. The subdued verses transitioning suddenly into the intense chorus, as her outrage bubbles over... It's really quite striking.

These are the kind of carrots I would eat Almanzo Wilder-style (knaw around the outside bit and then eat the inner core).
