They have a few others, I think. Their self-titled one was my favourite; there they were, at least, amusingly snarky. (I wanted to like Harry & The Potters better, but I was never as fond of the music on their earlier albums.)

If my wife wants to do something "computer-y" - pretty much anything - she'll reach for her phone.

If I want to do something "computer-y", I reach for my computer, for pretty much anything other than reading a short message or quick, casual browsing.

Yes, everyone is different, but I much prefer a larger screen and a physical keyboard for anything but the most trivial of tasks.

Are you a computer-first person, or a phone-first person?

alfvaen,
@alfvaen@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@neil
Definitely computer-first. I have a desktop and not a laptop, so I like mobile devices for their mobility--playing music, reading ebooks or ecomics, playing some (simple) games.

As I was listening to it i was thinking, "This is definitely one of World Party's best albums".
I mean, seriously, if when I first heard this somebody told me it was Karl Wallinger I would have believed them.

i absolutely miss the kai krause inspired homepages of the late 90s.

this western canadian ISP's splash page, circa 1997, features the kinds of bulbous, spherical buttons in a circular arrangement that enjoyed a brief popularity in that era ☺️

Not sure why I'm getting tagged here...I had nothing to do with it. I was still working for one of their (regional) competitors at the time. Only after it went under did I have to get a telusplanet.net email address.

Bring Me to Life by Evanescence is 20 years old this year. I’ve listened to it countless times.

If you’re like me and spent your late teens with music from the early 2000’s … I invite you to go read the lyrics to this song. Read every word. I’m reminded of what an absolutely beautiful song it truly is. ❤️

I’ll forever hold a grudge against the hotshot prick at the office I worked at for calling my name (Britt) “dumb” straight to my face.

It’s been like 4 years and I’m still seething.

This person was someone in a senior role too, but younger than me by at least a decade. Little prick.

@britt
The one time I saw George Carlin live...he was pretty good, actually, but there was one bit where he was just making fun of names. And what I remember is just him saying "Kyle" and making it sound really gay as if that was enough to make the name bad and him saying that way a funny joke. It did neither of those.

I love finding a function in a game that is literally just
void func(const char*){
}

No body. But it's called from 440 different places in the exe.

you can just smell the DEBUGMODE in the binary

I realised this weekend that what’s been my single favourite feature since my first iPhone is not universally known, which means I get to share it!

When you’re in the Calculator app and you rotate your phone in landscape, you get a scientific calculator.

Calculator app in landscape mode, with the many additional keys of a scientific calculator.

alfvaen,
@alfvaen@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@debcha
I remember the time when I knew that I'd gotten the scientific calculator to show up before, and was looking for the setting or button that made it show up... I may have actually had to search online to rediscover the rotation trick.

Astrud Gilberto has died. One of the musical styles that defined my generation was bossa nova. The most famous song in that style is The Girl from Ipanema. The song was written by Joao Gilberto, who is considered the father of bossa nova. Astrud was his wife.

The Girl from Ipanema is sung by Astrud, a girl who is not a professional singer. How did this happen? On the day the song was recorded, the intended singer didn't show up and Joao asked Astrud to have a go at it. The result is epic because the song benefits enormously from her innocent, ordinary, non-flashy singing.

An absolute legend.
