I’ve generally taken people’s complaints about the ABC becoming a right-wing mouthpiece with a grain of salt, but the other week we got valuable advice on what we should think about the economy from the CEO of Amazon Australia, the CEO of JB Hi-Fi & after 5 secs from a housing welfare person, a whole segment from the head of mortgages at a major bank giving us the correct way to think about the housing crisis. Today we had a piece about mortgage stress, but the people interviewed had a mortgage on their apartment AND A HOUSE!
I don’t own and never will be able to own a house.
Another weekend, another sideswipe at #Mastodon in the weekend press.
This time, its Ian Leslie (FT) in an article on X, collective action(s) and the alternatives to #Musk's sh*tshow... while focussing on #Threads, Leslie says in passing that like other rivals Mastodon 'requires a degree in computer science to use'!
Nonsense!
Once again, a journalist/writer dissing the #fediverse by making out it's much more complex to use than its actually is.
@ChrisMayLA6 i think the "it's too hard" is due to the algorithm (or lack of). Corporate solutions push things to you and "learns" the keywords that trigger engagement from you.
With Mastodon that engagement is driven by you. If you don't engage and like and follow and curate, then your feed looks either a bit barren or just full of shit that don't interest you.
But yeah, it's a bit of an exaggeration to say you need a degree to use.
My friend (Jasmina) is doing some research into how emotion affects language learning. Helping her out by increasing her sample size by sharing her project link here; it should take around 20 mins and is basically just pattern matching interspersed with different imagery.
I ain't a brain technician so I don't know the details, but if you got any questions I can forward them on to her.
I’m having a very annoying chat with someone at work right now. They have been a huge pain during this project. They are trying to explain why they want to cut corners. This is what just happened.
Colleague: Can we have a call? I want you to understand.
Me: Not right now.
C: Why?
Me: Not now.
C: I don’t understand.
Me: You don’t need to know why I am not going to take a call right now.
C: Why, though?
Me: BECAUSE if we have a call right now I will not be happy and we will just have a bad talk and frankly I don’t want to raise my voice this morning.
C: Oh….
The National Library of Australia further reduces accessibility with its new catalogue system. "Request this item" doesn't work in Windows XP. This follows on from Trove search failing under XP from April last year. Other institutions can release new catalogue systems without cutting off their XP users. (Issue reported to NLA.)
