The fact I can directly send messages to the president of the united states I think is a great good, even if Threads has downsides. Sure, ideally they'd be running their own Fediverse instance, but ANY ActivityPub supporting social media > non-activitypub social media tbh.

Federation should IMHO be enforced on any social media; doesn't mean you have to federate with it, but imagine if none of the email servers in the world could talk, that'd be bad.

(inb4 I get blocked by @/potus for this ayy)

apalu,

@anthropy Facebook one-way federates, your toot is only visible on fedi.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the eclipse here in #Indianapolis. It looks like the cloud forecast is partially cloudy at the beginning of the eclipse, with things getting clearer near totality. Of course, this all could change. #eclipse2024

If anybody tried selling girl scout cookies here, our equivalent of the FDA would put them behind bars so fast.

There's definitely precedent for them going after small fry, there was a pretty famous incident of a priest who tried selling some famous pastries that the Polish Pope liked, and he was quickly shut down, although I'm not sure if there were any legal consequences.

You need an insane amount of paperwork to be allowed to do something like this, and knowing our government, I'd be surprised if they would issue the appropriate permits to anybody below the age of 18.

apalu,

@miki girl scout cookies are boxed at a factory and sealed individually like any other product the FDA permits. Your comment inspired me to research it; presently Ferrero SpA and George Weston Limited are the ultimate owners of the subsidiaries that manufacture them. The girl scouts organization only owns the license.

apalu,

@miki I wish 😅. No it's a big corporate thing. Sometimes schools have bake sales, which are what you were imagining, where families cook and sell food as part of a fundraiser. I am far from an expert, but the overall picture is that "big operations" are heavily regulated, while local codes often have exceptions for small one-off events like school fundraisers, with exceptions to those exceptions for a list of high-risk foods the local government has found common issues with. The regulations can be very complex because so many bodies have the authority to write them. :blobfoxfloofcofe: 😂

apalu,

@miki Generally speaking the FDA does not concern itself with local affairs like restaurants or food sales, but I cannot say with certainty that principle applies in all cases, because although the constitution doesn't sound like it gives the federal government that authority, there have been two hundred years of astoundingly clever legal arguments by which the federal government has argued that various things indirectly have effects that cross between states, along with the common trick of withholding federal funding from unrelated state programs conditional on noncompliance with "voluntary guidelines."

apalu,

@miki That's interesting. If our government was that centralized it would never work - all of our federal regulations are written by agencies with a huge amount of autonomy. Only the local governments function well enough to actually write detailed laws like that (congress approves budgets and rarely sets anything other than broad directives). I think it's caused by having such a large country under one deliberative authority.

    apalu,

@beka_valentine you're asking for something impossible, he was a US airman presumably on leave. (I don't think that was a good thing for him to do, but "because he should have flown across the ocean and joined the fighting" is not the most practical reason to offer for that...)

    Question for astrophotography folks:

Is there any reasonable way to shoot with standardized filters with an off the shelf dslr? I have a home decor project in mind that id like to use a standard SDSS g and r for (or maybe a couple of the hst filters depending on how I’m feeling). But like I don’t really wanna be constrained to Nikon’s R, G, and B filters.

    #astrophotography

    apalu,

@erl @thomasfuchs you do get a product, but I'm not really sure how that's a problem. :blobfox3c: if you need precise numbers you can get them with a linear equation, otherwise the bands on the filter are pretty narrow relative to the bands on the camera so you can just pick the brightest of r,g and b.

    apalu,

@erl @thomasfuchs I suppose it depends on the filter. HST filters are very narrow.

    apalu,

@erl @thomasfuchs if you don't mind me asking, why not reduce the exposure time, if the problem is that the channels are being saturated?

@LeftistLawyer I think you are right in the northeast because of the early industrialization of the region, but wrong about the south where slave plantations were a basis for some of the oldest (American) money there is.

But the US has historically had a lot of social mobility so old money does not really exist as a major force here the way it does in Europe.

    We already know that this AI was created by ripping off visual artists without consent or compensation.     Oh my god, energy waves aren't the only thing that can be polarized, or have standing waves;

    • particles of all sizes, as seen with sound
    • physical, real objects with a point mass, such as a pendulum

Seemingly Christiaan Huygens, inventor of the first pendulum clock, ALSO invented a wave theory of light, which became "physical optical theory", that describes things like interference patterns in the 17th century (1673) and we never realized the connection between the two
    https://www.sciencealert.com/350-year-old-theorem-reveals-profound-connection-between-properties-of-light

    apalu,

@anthropy the connection between standing waves and uncoupled oscillators is an old idea. It comes from the linearity of the electromagnetic field through the fact that different frequencies can store energy without interacting.

It's where you start from to come up with the nonzero vacuum energy of the quantized em field. That is related to the way quantum harmonic oscillators have nonzero minimum energy.

    apalu,

@anthropy I checked a copy I have of a 1950s book and it mentions polarization in the discussion of the oscillators. Maybe the new research involves nonlinearity, because pendulums are anharmonic oscillators in the regime of large amplitudes? :blobfox3c:

I go to Israeli journalists' Twitter pages and read Yedioth and Haaretz and see scathing criticism of the government, and reporting of anti-government protests, of families of the dead and kidnapped openly heckling ministers, of civil society telling Bibi to go already. Then I see hate sites like Mondoweiss proclaim Israel as a dictatorship that brooks no dissent.

    apalu,

@Alon i heard something about protestors being arrested there. do you think that is really happening?

    apalu,

@Alon well its really more than just the cops unfortunately. you know what they say about war being a graveyard for democracies and all that. here's to the dissidents.

    apalu,

@Alon @Colinvparker unfortunately the coalition passed another bill to limit the supreme court after the one to politicize the judiciary failed, and now it is being reviewed by the court. The new bill strikes down the reasonableness test thereby reducing the court's power of review.
