Electronic music and Sci fi novellas are what I do. Surreal/strange/unsettiling is good, literal/polite/nice is boring.

I forgot in my earlier post, I think you folks might appreciate. Adding some analog stank (and humanity) to sterile computer sounds.

Ie. All-analog mix of electronic music through an A&H GL2200 and 14 analog compressors (mostly dBx, but a Drawmer and an Ashley in there too).

This mix creates the general structure for a final (much tighter) edit/mix/master in , which I'll do sometime in the next couple of weeks...

one of the difficult things about today's Zeitgeist is that people seem to assume that your (well, my) opinions about things are permanent, ie. that I am incapable of acknowledging a good and valid argument and shifting my standpoint to accommodate it. assuming that I can't also assumes that confrontation is inevitable, which actively creates the conflict you're expecting... which defeats the purpose of talking about the thing in the first place.

The opprobrium panpsychists sometimes face is shocking. Yet, on the other end, I rarely see other theories receiving such spirited support. Maybe the fact that it's so polarising speaks volumes of its epistemic value, at the very least as a deep and thorough critique of established mores in literature on consciousness 🧠

@philosophy @philosophyofmind

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@ninokadic @philosophy @philosophyofmind The term is new to me, and the Wikipedia page for this one is a bit of a jumbled mess. How are you defining panpsychism? Universal consciousness in everything, or that consciousness is widely distributed through biology, even in the "lowest" levels of thought and perception?

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

I've used SEP before, and I like it, but it has the opposite problem of often being a bit too thorough 😅 But that's also me just being lazy...

Using Distrokid has ended up backfiring. All of my songs are now on Spotify, Apple, etc, meaning that whenever I post them to TikTok, they get muted because of copyright violations. So by making my music available to listen to and buy, I make it impossible to market.

Tomorrow it's back to puredata programming. I hope you're looking forward to more videos of little black boxes connected with black lines and listening to bleeps and bloops while staring at dancing spheres and cubes.

Fuck Pro Tools…. I swear it knows I’ve been using Reaper and now it’s throwing a strop.

Look Avid, I don’t care if it is Valentine’s Day, I’m in love with #Reaper just deal with it.

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@mxtthxw I haven't used ProTools since PT 7, but it was boss as a pure audio editor (for dialogue/sfx/sound design). But I always hated the shenanigans around how they tied the program to their expensive hardware, so i switched away as soon as i could. It's been a long time and I didn't keep up, but I'm not surprised to see that the shenanigans continue. Avid was the vanguard of shitty corporate subscription services that hijack your livelihood.

I joined the school band in 4th grade as a drummer because I didn't want to deal with notes.
Now I deal with notes every day of my life, and I love it.

I studied the arts because I didn't want to deal with the cold, unfeeling exactitude of math.
Now I'm trying to convert Beats Per Minute to Frames Per Second and I fucking hate it.

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@Traiken Excel is your friend on that one. You can put the formula together once and then just plug in your values. I use it all the time to converting from region length to bpm based on the number of beats in the region. Definitely more of a head twist to calculate by hand than you'd expect at first glance.

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@Traiken Hmm... Are you trying to match your bpm to the frame rate? Or control video playback speed with a metronome?

There are a bunch fo free options for full office suites. OpenOffice and LibreOffice are the two I know, but the others look pretty slick too.

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@Traiken Seems like you should be able to do that in a video editor. Can't you just edit the clips to fit the rhythm? You could even export just the guitar to make it easier. Or is there some other special thing you're trying to do?

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@Traiken Oh, I see. Reaper can do grid-based video editing... I've only tinkered with it so I don't know if it's actually useful.

Depending on your software, you might be able to import an edit decision list with the names of specific clips you want in each spot. Again, never actually used the function, but I know it exists...

Well I mean about 3.6 billion people are using it on their phone right now and probably don't even know about it, so yeah https://fedi.nano.lgbt/objects/d8041dcb-3b9f-4172-a129-a22e103209de

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@jimbob True, but those are also highly black-boxed versions of Linux designed to "protect" people from getting overwhelmed and confused by too many options... That said, I also think most people would be actively better off on Ubuntu. It's close enough to Windoze and though they'll still have no idea what they're doing, at least they won't be data-farmed the whole time they're doing it.

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@frigginglorious @jimbob This makes it seem pretty innocuous, analogous to the Popularity Contest thing in the Debian installer:

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@frigginglorious OH... Yeah, no. My article was from 2020, so this is a much newer development.

I very much agree with this sentiment:

"Because if this is allowed, it will get worse. Because that’s what happens with ads in any product or service, it’s like finding cockroaches. When there’s one, more are to follow."

I'm happy to donate to Debian to keep it alive, but it should never become a for-profit enterprise. There's nothing worse than a corporate profiteer cockroach infestation.

Looking for #recommendations for a #movie to watch this evening. I'm currently very into slow-moving spy thrillers of the post-war, cold war period, and the more paranoid, the better.

Anything in the vein of The Third Man or The Spy Who Came In From the Cold would be awesome.

Any ideas?

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

I've seen a lot of those already, part of the problem :)

Days of the Condor and All the President's men were what got me onto it. And yes, they're both spectacular. I really enjoyed The Parallax View, but it's definitely too paranoid for some people, I think...

I'm going to go with either Klute or Funeral in Berlin. Can't decide if I'm in a Donald Sutherland or Michael Cane kind of mood, though.

I'm about 45 mins in, pretty good so far. This one has a lot more of a "comedy" feeling than I rememebr Ipress having... But I adore 1960's British cinematography, and this is a wonderful example.

I remember not continuing the series last year because all of the production stills from BDB had Caine in a Russian fur hat that was obviously supposed to be goofy.

Funeral In Berlin held it together though, just. They pulled way back from the creepiness of Ipcress and kept it tame. Also, the bombshell secret-spy love-interest-with-grand-canyon-cleavage twist was an obvious bid for the Bond audience. Which was kind of disappointing.
