It's probably a lost cause but I'm annoyed that the party in the game I'm DMing completely skipped a huge section of the castle where this takes place because I thought I had some really good writing in there giving some insight into the BBEG.

Like I made it a point that when you look at the living quarters of his family they're all very personalized but his essentially looks like a hotel room. It tells you that he actually feels very empty inside and doesn't have much of a sense of self.

Ooh I just had a wicked idea. So the players are gonna meet a character who is working for the Kargatane and under Alcio, so what if she convinces them they have to hunt down a "dangerous criminal" who murdered her mentor's family member and killed an entire tribe of Vistani via an undead horde.

Aka Rudolph Van Richten, via a very biased version of the story that leaves out how said Vistani kidnapped his son and sold him to a vampire to be a slave and also killed his wife.

Halloween is making me remember when I was in college (sophomore year I think) one of our friends revealed she had never been able to go trick or treating because her family was super religious (I don't remember exactly what they were but I wanna say Jehovah's Witnesses) so we decided to give her the full experience by going around Savin Hill and trick or treating and some people gave us so much shit for it.

I'm really excited about my next Darkon game because I have set out several possible paths for the players to take and it's going to be interesting to see which ones they go for.

So I think of it like I have put out several fishing lures seeing which ones they'll bite.

The corollary of this metaphor being if they do something I don't expect that's the equivalent of the fish jumping up out of the water and hitting the fisher in the face.

Oh holy shitballs that fight was awesome. The players were up against a (slightly nerfed) enemy with the stat equivalent of a mummy lord and a clockwork dragon and it says something about how good these PCs are that it took that to do any real damage to them.

In "jokes only I'm going to get" one of the young women Zechariah's stolen the body of is named Charlotte, and this is how she's described in his journal.

She's named after Charlotte Corday, and the reference to stabbing him as he bathes is how Corday killed Jean-Paul Marat.

It also explains what the players found out last night which is this guy wears chainmail under his clothes because he is extremely paranoid.

I had a patient on Sunday who was a little girl going up into Children's Hospital for a fairly minor thing (TL;DR she probably had an infection in her jaw but because she had a fever they wanted a specialist to look at it) but she had an IV in and her father was insisting that she wasn't allowed to bend her arm.

I tried to jump in to say that as long as nothing is running through said IV, that's fine, but he kept cutting me off, and I just dropped it.

It's a real bittersweet feeling to be almost at the end of this #dnd campaign with the probably final session this Friday, but I also can't wait to hear the players when they realize what one of the two final bosses is.

My players managed to defeat the undead pirate who has been plaguing the Jagged Coast, and in the process they learned the true identity of the wereshark who showed up to help and had made a couple small appearances before then.

I also figured out how to move them into the next plot because they found the fourth member of their party in the hold of the undead ship and among the other captives was a young woman who charged at the undead pirate with a piece of wood.

So I saw this map and just knew I had to use it in a game.

I decided it's the "headquarters" for the local branch of the Kargatane in Martira Bay in the sense that they hang out there, but it's the equivalent of a cheesy tourist trap that they only go to because one of the agents has fond memories of going there as a kid.

Looking up previous editions of Ravenloft I found interesting characters I wanna bring into my game but I also found a fairly major one I'm going to revise. There's a wealthy rug merchant named Stefan Dyreth who has made a shit ton of money because he has employed reanimated people to work in his mills so he doesn't have to feed or pay them.

Now in the original it's undead children but I read that and said "Nope" because I am not comfortable with that. It's still horrible but they're adults.

Since I'm almost done with the current D&D campaign I'm DMing I've started preliminary work on the next one which is going to be #Ravenloft Darkon. I'm gonna end up taking bits from different editions rather than sticking with 5e canon.

There is a lot of interesting stuff in previous editions like the whole deal with the Necropolis and "Death" but the idea of Azalin being gone and the domain starting to collapse is very interesting to me so I'm doing the "Why not both?" method.

My favorite refutation of the "The Egyptians were too good at pyramids, they must have had aliens help" argument is how there are multiple pyramids that straight up fell down and the one where they changed the angle halfway up because they realized it wasn't gonna work (the Bent Pyramid).

It was a process to figure out how to do it right filled with multiple failures. Survivorship bias means that only the ones that were built best are still up.

Someone inspired me to declare that the absolute character assassination that was the asshole DM's take on the whole Strahd and Tatyana backstory was in fact a play that was written at sword point (okay, fang point) to portray Strahd as flatteringly as possible.

Discussion on Discord got me remembering the Great Tumblr Flag Wars of the 2010s. God, that was stupid. I'm eternally reminded of one of my dad's favorite quotes from academia, which is "the fights are so nasty because the stakes are so low."

There was a point in the 2010s when the queer community on Tumblr was all about making flags for the different identities and the fights got nasty and very very stupid.

I always go back to that one Eddie Izzard bit: "Yes, but do you have a flag?"
