Hey Babka folks,

As some of you have experienced, it's been an "active" time here on the Fediverse in the last few days. There's a global spam attack which is effecting some of our users.

In response, we have imported a spam blocklist for the situation, and @serge has written a little tool to make it easier for him to block new spam locations.

Sadly this only works going forward, and existing spam has gotten through. So keep reporting, and we'll keep blocking!

In addition, Babka appears to have been the target of a DDOS attack yesterday, which was the cause of the 15 minutes of downtime. Special thanks to @raf for alerting @serge to stop watching TV on a Sunday without his phone and notice the instance was down.

We're still working on this, but we're aware of it, and while all downtime is bad, we have a procedure if it should happen again.

Babka Social's values include diversity and this proudly includes LGBTQ+ folks.

As part of our ongoing commitment to our Queer community members, we have signed the IFTAS pledge (
https://about.iftas.org/2024/01/30/targeted-misgendering-and-deadnaming-in-the-fediverse/ ) to protect our users from anti-queer harassment, including deliberate misgendering, deadnaming, and promotion of so-called "conversion therapy".

Though these have always been our policies, in the process of signing the pledge, we have made these clear and explicit as you can read about in our extended https://blog.babka.social/rules

Special thanks to @em for help in ensuring that our Code of Conduct, Server Rules, and new Rules Page all aligned and conformed with the IFTAS requirements.

Babka has some exciting announcements this week!

We're running a new version of Mastodon-Babka, which is based on Glitch-SOC. As you can see this new version has new iconography, as it's part of the yet-to-be-released Mastodon 4.3. We're on the cutting edge!

In addition, our translation offerings have increased greatly thanks to @raf whose translation service now supports 43 languages! What a great way to bridge communities worldwide!

Dear Babka Community,

Over the last week, we have seen some of the most terrible posts across the Fediverse and Babka moderators have worked diligently to identify antisemitism, report it, and most importantly, provide Jews on Babka Social a place with as little of it as possible.

This is not easy work. The moderators, some of who have family in Israel and are effected by the attacks by Hamas, continue to work diligently while sometimes struggling emotionally, both from the situation in I/P and from the callous hatred across the Fediverse.

What is clear is how important this instance is to so many, when the chips are down, how important it is to be amongst fellow Jews (and allies), for shared support, shared tears and shared laughter. We're here for you and we will continue to be here for you, with open doors and open hearts.

We have so much else you could help with (and we need the help). That includes:

Effective immediately, we are suspending all federation with emacs.ch.

One of its users has initiated a campaign of stalking and harassment against several of our users, with at least four being targeted, and specifically targeting our moderators. This includes false accusations, hashtag spamming, and the creation of sock puppet accounts to further harass these individuals.

We have made efforts to address this issue with the administrator of this instance, but despite days of intense discussion with him, there have been no visible actions that have resulted in a reduction of this harassment campaign.

With the current climate of antisemitism, including death threats against Jewish moderators, we suggest that other sites which care about the safety of their users take this situation seriously and this we recommend a #Fediblock against emacs.ch

We've signed the anti-Meta pact ( https://fedipact.online/ ). This is why:

Traditional social media, and Meta in particular, has been highly problematic when it comes to Jews, including allowing antisemitic hate speech, harassment and more.

If a Meta instance were to federate with Babka Social, it would put our people at risk, not only from antisemitic harassment, but also from data collection and other threats to our vulnerable community.

Babka operates according to its values: https://blog.babka.social/values/ and Meta violates those values in more ways than one.
