Since about 1993, the Alberta government has been taking federal child allowance benefits away from the children in the care of the provincial welfare system.

Now Treaty 8 chiefs are supporting three representative plaintiffs in a legal action to get those dollars returned to individuals.

And the federal government is being sued too for not doing anything to stop Alberta’s actions.

I find the expressed in the riot at the high school in Queens to be deeply distressing, because it appears to be socially acceptable to some. We know how to deal with the old, white supremacist kind of antisemitism--with social ostracism. Our institutions and society are failing to call out this new antisemitism.

@gnome mods. when a Jew enters your chat and sends one message, on topic, and the only reply is "Free Palestine", you might just have an antisemitism problem

imagine if an outspoken LGBT activist entered the chat, asked about display scaling, and the next "random" message was "There are two genders!", or if a Black American asked about keyboard layouts and was responded to with "White power!"

You don't have to be into TypeScript to appreciate that CSS can do that and DevTools also reports it.

bp,

@matuzo true, yes, and, we can also appreciate that we have this AND typescript both because of an industry-wide shift towards stronger type guarantees, and that's a good thing

The SS developed a system of murder at Auschwitz in which hope was employed as a crucial weapon. Jews deported to the camp were given false hope and promised new lives.

One of the most significant remnants of this are thousands of kitchenware items that were found at the site of the liberated camp. Today many of them are presented in our main exhibition.

This is Emily Hand. She is an Irish-Israeli citizen whose mother died of cancer when she was young. Her father was initially told she had been killed in the Oct. 7th attacks when she was staying over at a friend's in Kibbutz Be'eri. He later found out that Emily was in fact alive and held hostage in Gaza. After hours of agonizing delays by Hamas, Emily was returned to her father last night as part of the ongoing truce and hostage deal.

Released in 2000, Giants: Citizen Kabuto is a third person shooter (TPS), real-time strategy (RTS), and kaiju game all in one.

This game deserves a better name because who the hell is ever going to remember Giants: Citizen Kabuto? What does that even mean? The name alone doesn’t even imply what this game is about. Is it a video game retelling of Citizen Kane?

In reality, this has to be one of the most ambitious games I’ve ever played – there’s nothing like it. You get three different campaigns, controlling three different alien races, all with tremendously different abilities.

In all this, we have one of the funniest stories I’ve ever encountered in PC gaming. This could be a Douglas Adams novel.

On a planet called The Island, one amphibious humanoid species called the Sea Reapers dominates. To do this, they collect another humanoid species called the Smarties to sacrifice to a giant called Kabuto. This being is beyond the control of the Sea Reapers, but they can pacify him for their own advantage.

Then one day, a very British hamster-like humanoid species called Meccaryns crash lands on the Island. One of them, called Baz, chances upon a Smartie who helps him find the rest of his crew. Shenanigans ensue, and now the Meccaryns are battling the Sea Reapers.

You start off as Baz. Later on, you switch to a Sea Reaper named Delphi. Finally, your last campaign is as the Kabuto, wreaking havoc across the Island.

Most of the dev team worked on MDK, a classic TPS. At first, it seems to be a lot like MDK – but with a jet pack. But after you rescue your team, and build relationships with the Smarties, the game starts having RTS aspects where you start building based and try to destroy the Sea Reaper’s bases. You might think this would be awkward and doesn’t mesh well, but actually the TPS + RTS blend works stunningly well.

Nowadays, I don’t think many people are impressed with the graphics, but back in 2000, this was considered cutting edge stuff. So good were the graphics, in fact, that people would often test out their PCs with this game. That said, I do like the graphics. For the same reason pixel art appeals to me, so does low poly art.

The sound design is likewise excellent. Particularly, the voice acting is phenomenal. I rarely look forward to cut scenes, but these cut scenes are core to the whole game. You don’t want to miss them. The soundtrack is also great, but the star of the show is clearly the voice acting.

If there’s anything I don’t like, it’s that this game doesn’t have a save anywhere feature. The game is only saved once you finish a mission. Since missions can sometimes be 15 minutes, this can get quite annoying fast.

Many people mention that this game has a great multiplayer feature, and it was popular for a short while at LAN parties. I’ve never tried the multiplayer, but hey, it’s a thing.

Almost any modern PC can run this game. You need a 1Ghz single core CPU, 256MB of RAM, and 1.1GB of space. Integrated graphics will do fine. This game has native support for Windows and Mac, and can be run on Linux via Proton. Right now, however, it is not supported on Steam Deck.

In addition to PC, Giants has been ported to PS2. Is is unavailable on any mobile platforms.

There’s no micro-transactions nor is there DLC.

Planet Moon Studios made Giants. In addition to this game, they also made Armed and Dangerous as well as Disney Tangled.

On Steam, Giants has a 95% positive rating based on 145 reviews. Many people agree that this is a hidden gem, a game that deserves more attention, and is completely unique. A few people on Steam feel that the Steam version isn’t feature complete and is full of bugs – they recommend buying from GOG.com.

Personally, I bought the GOG.com version and it’s been running without a hitch. It actually supports my resolution (1920x1200), which most modern games don’t even do. There is some jankiness, but that’s to be expected with games of this era.

On Steam, Giants: Citizen Kabuto sells for C$10.99 but is on sale for -20% off at C$8.79. However, on GOG.com, it’s still at regular price. I definitely recommend this game and think it’s worth checking out, but if you don’t want to monkey around with mods or patches, go with the GOG.com version.

This game is mostly forgotten nowadays but has a dedicated cult following. It is definitely both a hidden gem and a PC gaming classic.

bp,

@atomicpoet This game is a banger. Required reading imho

Some excellent perspective. Israel has been arbitrarily detaining Palestinian people, including women and children for decades. Media silence on the BBC, as usual these days.

All these innocent people on both sides need to go home to their families, today.

From tomorrow morning (4am CET), and for the next four days, 50 Israeli hostages and 150 Palestinian prisoners are to be exchanged in four groups. More could follow in the days after.
Hamas releases 40 children and 13 women in the first groups. Israel wants to hand over 150 'prisoners'. What the Western media is keeping quiet about... Israel's 150 'prisoners' are primarily children, teenagers, young people. Innocently imprisoned, taken away from their families.
The media is silent about it! I wonder why!?
