I was watching a YouTube tutorial on running nix on macOS, nodding along and impressed by defining a setup using a flake file, and then the person said "and now we're going to install homebrew using nix because there are packages in there that aren't in nix” and I nope'd out so hard.
@tonyarnold I used nix at my n-2 job and it's impressive technology but has holes. E.g. it would set up most of a Rails environment but you still had to install Postgres and Redis separately - which are the hard bits! So I never fully saw the appeal over just using asdf or whatever to manage installs.
Perhaps the most pointless app on Vision Pro, but still quite fun to play with. This is a complete remake of the original PCalc About screen in VR. It's basically me experimenting with what's possible today with RealityKit, over-engineering things as usual, and then for some inexplicable reason actually shipping it. I hope you enjoy it!
@tonyarnold@corduroy Yeah it's taking a LOT longer than I hoped to get reasonably priced EVs.
My experience: we weighed up a BYD Atto vs getting a new Kia Seltos - that's what we had already, basically the same size car. Here's how it priced out.
Yes, I'm fully aware that a 50k car is still way expensive for most people and we were lucky to have something to trade in.
@corduroy@huwr Education should be free for as long as people can take advantage of it. If we can't even do that as a society, what the fuck are we even doing pretending to be a society?
@davemark I've watched two games the last two days - almost two hours of hockey with one (real) goal. And it's been edge of the seat stuff the whole way!
Having all of this time to reflect and introspect during my illness and recovery over the past few months has left me wondering what impact I believed I was having on my peers and the people around me over the last decade.
@tonyarnold You've had much more impact than most people I know - specifically with Reveal on a LOT of developers, but also more locally with the people who have been lucky enough to work with you.
As for career, that's a very personal question. I felt the same - in fact I felt I'd gone significantly backwards. But then I realised I don't really care. I'd rather be a good developer working with good people than have a high fallutin' job title and be miserable.
The interactions between SwiftUI, SwiftData and Swift Concurrency can be confusing.
Because SwiftData Models are retrieved by Views on the MainActor, it's reasonably safe to pass them between Views, but anything around the edges will still force you to drop back to persistent identifiers and looking up the Models — it'd almost be easier to pretend that it's not safe to pass Models between Views, for consistency.
@tonyarnold I installed Sentry recently on a brand new iOS 17 app we're building with SwiftData. It's a standard architecture, no ViewModels, all simple and as Apple recommends kinda thing. Sentry spotted a few places were DB actions were performed off the main thread. (Was impressive actually.)
I am genuinely shocked at the lengths countries and their media will go to to shut down debate on the ongoing Israeli genocide of the Palestinians.
Germany - of all countries - should know what happens when only one side of a debate is allowed to be heard, for example.
The greatest trick Israel has pulled is to muddy the waters such that they can claim any criticism of their actions is anti-semitic. It's not the same thing, as can be seen by the very many jews who criticise Israel.
@maks They are, and have been for decades. This isn't only a Netenyahu thing (though he has been involved in it for much of that time of course). Slowly killing people by restricting their food, water, medicine has the same end result as killing them with bombs and bullets.
@maks That is an interesting video. I watch it and think "yep, tick, tick, tick" they are doing all that. His argument seems to mostly be as long as you don't say in public why you are doing it, it's not genocide. Which seems like too convenient a loophole tbh, I think he's oversimplifying there.
I’m behind a full season of #StarTrekDiscovery so I’m positive I’ll probably be spoiled before the end of the series. The sad part though is I don’t think I care.
The show got better near the end of S3 but honestly I still don’t like the way Bernham has treated Saru. The show’s never really felt like #StarTrek to me either, and for my money the best thing to come out of it was Pike and Strange New Worlds.
I know a lot of you out there love it tho, so you do you. I’m happy for ya. Enjoy! 🖖
@decryption yeah you’ve had way worse luck than me, but it’s definitely not uncommon.
I’ll likely do the same when the warranty is done, but like you said I’m still not blown away by the alternatives. Most decent ones are still $10k or more above the M3 and I already feel uncomfortable enough sitting at the $60k range for a car
