Radio news just now, talking about "job growth" and listing medical as first in their list of where such number goes up is happening.

Now why might we be seeing more need for medical jobs in now our fifth year of pandemic?

Meanwhile, ex-administration official they bring in to talk to the issue, skips right past this; talks about growth in hospitality jobs "after" pandemic "lock-downs".

To explain job openings in 2024.

Because of course he does.

beadsland,
@beadsland@disabled.social avatar

Walked away before segment ended, but 99% confident that despite opening with a gesture toward "growth" in medical jobs, the "what does this mean for inflation" news person let their guest expert's explanation by way of diversion to the bottom of the list… go unchallenged.

Because of course they would have. This is the fourth estate of , after all.

Also, notably, second on the list? Oh, look, "government" jobs. Orly? What sort of "government" jobs are those?

beadsland,
@beadsland@disabled.social avatar

Via Labor Dept:

"Health care added 72,000 jobs in March, above the average monthly gain of 60,000 over the prior 12 months. In March, job growth continued in ambulatory health care services (+28,000), hospitals (+27,000), and nursing and residential care facilities (+18,000).

…employment in government increased by 71,000, higher than the average monthly gain of 54,000 over the prior 12 months. Over the month, employment increased in local government (+49,000) and federal government (+9,000). "

“Is it cake” for the STS set: Is it infrastructure?

(had a slightly more academic convo about this w the grad class yesterday) (and i do mean slightly)

beadsland,
@beadsland@disabled.social avatar

@inquiline Thinking of every discussion of "successful" academics (or, you know, any other career where individual "success" is an externally ascribable quality) and the spouse keeping said success's home life in order.

The step from culturally-specific familial codings of domestic labor as institution, to institution as infrastructure, would seem, in this case esp., a mincing one.

Cf. Annemarie Mol's work on eating as excorporation of those who grow and prepare our food.

Curious if there's any SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence data for U.S. dairy cattle.

Thinking about deer (and cats) testing positive, in context of known consequence of immune senescence in humans.

We've been worried about crossing species barriers for decades. Was expected to happen eventually, even without covid in the mix.

Nonetheless, one wonders how much more susceptible are U.S. livestock to cross-species spillover & zoonoses than they would have been five years ago?

    Thought perhaps they renamed it and that broke the link, but searching for the author and various key terms is turning up only older articles.

    Thought perhaps a botched restore to an older backend database, but it was posted Monday, and am finding articles from today.

    Odd that it was pulled within an hour of your sharing the link.

    Hard to judge these things these days, no longer having a real sense of activity levels on site that shall not be named, but article appears to have gotten very little attention, judging by extant posts, even when author tweeted it.

    One would expect at least some reply-guys or abuse on such a topic, yet it looks to have passed unnoticed.

    That said, the explicit shout-out here suggests that perhaps there was back-office resistance to releasing the piece in the first place?

    Just peeeked in at the latest replyista in a mutual's thread.

    @inquiline Perhaps my use of the term casts a wider net than others would.

    That said, in a country where Jewish folk are being jailed† for challenging genocide, on the basis of violating (checks notes) antisemitism laws, that zeal for punishing perceived rule breakers, rather than addressing injustice, seems...

    Consistent.

    †Of course, those perceived as of certain other social categories suffer worse than mere arrest.

    There's a famous line where someone shouts something like "I'm furious, I tell you, furious!" Only the words not furious (I don't think) and myself am not clued in enough about pop culture to put my finger on what have only the vaguest of recollections.

    Jog anyone else's noggin?

    My recollection is of something much pithier, and almost reminiscent of an earlier 20th century vocal delivery, but perhaps played up to comic effect in a more recent production.

    The first estate would have an imperial interest in maintaining U.S. power in the region through a proxy settler state—even as military support for same serves to subsume latent domestic antisemitism under jingoist Islamaphobia—regardless of lobbying.

    That AIPAC is there to remind them of the benefits of letting their offshore partner develop & export occupation police training and automated weapons systems…is gravy, sure.

    But interests go back to Balfour.

    As you help them navigate unique challenges, you’ll have a chance to think critically about how these individuals can act responsibly and mitigate risks.

    @inquiline Any company that advertises itself with a scroll of industries already would ick anyone who is critical of monological ways of seeing.

    Such "yeah, it's all the same to us" pretty much heralds lack of discernment in that regard.

    beadsland,
    @beadsland@disabled.social avatar

    @inquiline Ooooh, priceless:

    At the top of industries page: 24,000+ customers

    At the bottom of same page, following an array of logos:
    24,000+ industry leaders

    Beyond the fact that apparently none of their customers aren't an industry leader, the math, given industries listed, would suggest that there are on average near a thousand leaders per industry...

    Even for an international concern, there ain't that many countries to lead in.

    Yeah, Landmark's got nothing on them.

    beadsland,
    @beadsland@disabled.social avatar

    @inquiline That antique tin of jacks someone found while cleaning out the attic is a dozen things—if the rubber ball hasn't degraded and we count the tin itself—yet only one (salable) item.

    But flipping that nomenclature of greater and lesser around, and now it makes less sense. (Cue math lady meme.)

    But yeah, Vector's subtext would seem to be either they don't accept non-leaders as customers (everyone's gotta specialize somehow!) or they make all their customers leaders (again cue Landmark…).

    A beset by reply-guys (sea lions) (ok, they're mostly seals)

    beadsland,
    @beadsland@disabled.social avatar

    @inquiline

    Interestingly, a group of sealions is known either as a "colony" (on land) or a "raft" (at sea, same as for otters); a group of seals is sadly either a "harem" (misappropriating the original term of a women's living space through the western gaze) or a "rookery"; and a group of manatee either a "herd" (for protection while grazing) or "aggregation" (when brought to together for no such purpose).

    TIL that for many animals, their collective nouns are context-specific.
