In the United States, when you buy a house or a car, you become a target of scammers. They will send mail to your house, pretending to be your mortgage company or your auto maker or your auto lender, insisting that you must give more money for some other thing. I received these three—two postcards, one "URGENT" letter—just today.

The U.S. is a scam culture. We are beset at all times by people trying to trick us out of our money, and it’s all functionally legal.

benb,

@waldoj when I bought my EV, the dealership really wanted me to come back after a month for some ...thing. They tried to entice me with a $25 gas card

I choose to believe in a better future, in a future where someone has invented a simple-past tense form of the word "troubleshoot" that does not sound silly.
Does this make me an optimist? Maybe, but it's the only way I know how to live.

Using my work provided MacBook Pro 2023 with the M2 Max and doing a project in Xcode, and Xcode is so snappy, never realized it could behave this way... then again, this laptop is w/o a doubt the fastest computer I've ever owned…

benb,

@ogi shhhhhhh. I literally just talked myself out of buying one of those

I've now seen several folks push back against adding more flags when it comes to search visibility, saying it would be confusing to have more options. This is a solvable problem. More granular control is always better, and you can always roll these options up into higher level presets. This has been the standard for decades in PC gaming, it works, we should do it.

benb,

@fancysandwiches a similar option is to have something like prusaslicer's gui, where you can toggle the level of control you want over your environment, and it just hides the finer-grained controls

I am begging local news outlets to find ad services that don't feature body horrors

    benb,

@mike805 I know there are solutions, but I shouldn't have to install browser extensions to get news without visceral content

    benb,

@mgwalker you know, I wouldn't mind going back to the days of tiresome clickbait clichés if it meant never having to see the same picture if toenail fungus 18 times in a 6 paragraph article

This is doubly exciting because Chevy just announced that they are not canceling the Bolt, but will be bringing it back on the Ultium platform. So we might have very cheap drivable home batteries available on a mass scale soon!

    benb,

@mogul or they bring back the bolt at the same $50k entrypoint everyone is starting EVs at 🙃

    benb,

@mogul I would love to see a VTL (edit: VTH) at that price range. Lack of it is my biggest gripe so far with my car. I'm just also a little skeptical with Chevy right now, given they dropped the lower-trim Blazer

    benb,

    @mgwalker @mogul :hmm-yes:

I always wondered if there was a show that aired on January 2, 1999 as it's notably absent on 's website.

Now I have my answer 😈

    benb,

@qlp reading this made me a little curious. Then I got to the "😈" and now I'm a lot curious.

The alignment chart of emailers has a “chaotic neutral” box that’s defined as people who respond to emails by editing the quoted message to add their answers inline, in different-colored text.

    benb,

@waldoj I love this strategy, both as asker and answerer, because it ensures everything was answered and that the answers are associated with the right questions.

    benb,

@waldoj (N.B. this requires some other text to make it clear you don't come across as brusk)

    benb,

@waldoj totally. If that happens, hopefully everyone realizes a single email thread is the wrong format for the discussion

Anyone have a date/location yet for 2024? I'm sitting near our scientific programming / data viz folks and am trying to entice some of them into going.

    benb,

Do any camera manufacturers have better a warranty for their cameras and lenses than Sony? Sony only has 1 year warranty and they're fucking me hard on a $2k lens, which is making me want to sell all of my shit and buy from a company that won't entirely fuck me after I give them thousands of dollars.

    benb,

@fancysandwiches it might be worth asking your local camera shop for help. Even if you didn't buy it there, I think they generally have a closer relationship with manufacturers (more like a car dealership than a grocery store, if that makes sense)

Y'all should read this compelling piece from Marianne Bellotti - organizations should be investing in training their own staff, not outside consultants:

    https://bellmar.medium.com/the-first-thing-we-do-lets-kill-all-the-consultants-bc64bcebf1b5

I've been pushing this concept in for years - we need to upskill and not just rely on external folks to fix our problems.

    benb,

    @mogul @mzagaja @krusynth nevermind that:

    • many agencies max out individual contributors at GS-14 because GS-15 must be supervisory (CISA included, last I heard)
    • "software engineer" is a low-to-mid level role at most orgs. At my company, it's the lowest title a full-time software professional can have. What are the medians for a principal engineer, software architect, data scientist, etc?
