When it comes to AI art (or "art"), it's hard to find a nuanced position that respects creative workers' labor rights, free expression, copyright law's vital exceptions and limitations, and aesthetics.

I think you miss two key points in here.

  1. No mention of "commercial impact" prong of fair use - LLMs directly diminish the market for the original works (esp. stuff like promoting midjourney with "in the style of X").
  2. The memorization problem isn't easy - it's impossible. LLM providers today are accounting for it on a vanishingly small number of potential outputs, and it's not by altering the models (they basically can't). It's by slapping output filters on at the end.

One time I met someone who I thought wanted to be a friend and she just wanted to ask if she could list all my awesome food recs in her ‘food recs startup’

Another time I met someone who was cool and then when we hung out she started spouting the worst Hindutva nonsense

Making friends in San Francisco is hard, I should move to Oakland lol

I decamped from SF to Oakland in 2014 - I loved 2010 SF (even though the character was already changing). Oakland was lovely, such distinctive character, and while it has all the same problems as SF, they're not as extreme and they're mitigated by how strong a sense of itself Oakland has. I miss it a lot, having recently moved up to Seattle

I love this from @danilo so much. It's not a promise, nor a solution, because those would both be disingenuous and ineffective.

Instead, it’s an exercise in refusing to accept the wrong constraints. I believe that’s the work under every work that matters.

I dislike this. To me, it reads like a total lack of empathy for the people who've burned out on trying to make this industry better. It's accurate to say that only monsters will make things if everyone else quits; but that observation doesn't erase the pain of the people who need to quit because caring is just too damn hard anymore

I expect you are! But that doesn't change the tenor of the piece. That second-to-last paragraph is not a statement of empathy.

PSA: This morning (10/14) there is an annular solar eclipse visible from many parts of the US.

⚠️DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITHOUT PROPER PROTECTION.⚠️

During an annular eclipse, at NO TIME is it safe to look at the sun without specially manufactured solar viewing film or filters. (No, you can’t make one with household materials. No, aluminum foil or sunglasses don’t work.)

A simple alternative: a pinhole projector (you just need some cardboard, or even just your fingers): https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/projection

@thomasfuchs
At the risk of being a total pedantic dickweevil, you just said "you can't make one with household materials" in the same breath as "you just need cardboard or your fingers"
