The older I get the more I realize that any group of people trying to accomplish a thing needs records and old people to recount the lore and avoid past mistakes and young people to challenge assumptions and take risks

@danirabbit This summarizes Chesterton's Fence very nicely.

@drewdevault Are global binds and per-window desktop-portal capture things that are coming to sway anytime soon?

I'm stuck on i3 for my work device because I often need to screenshare individual windows (I have an ultrawide monitor and people complain if i screenshare the entire display).

And I need global keybinds so discord can listen to PTT. Which again, forces me back to i3 for playing certain games with friends.

I look forward to when I can actually just uninstall i3 from my systems.

I haven't talked much about my day job, but now feels like the right time since I recently moved away from management back into a content + community-driven role at @thunderbird.

As successful as the Thunderbird project is, there's a lot of room for us to improve our community engagement, whether that's creating a more welcoming environment for new contributors OR just being a fun "third place" for our users.

What do YOU think is missing right now? What can we do better? 👂

@killyourfm @thunderbird I have 2 minor complaints that started in supernova. I would love a formal way to bug report, or file complaints via socials. I'm sure I could create a bugzilla report or something, but realistically, I'm never going to do that. No one wants that level of effort for a minor complaint.

eg: on supernova, the tabs for inbox/calendar/tasks are BELOW the action toolbar. And I hate it, but not enough to do something about it.

@killyourfm @thunderbird I guess this is kind of me saying "I want to be able to participate in a community, without having to explicitly join the community to contribute"... Which is probably a non-surprising thing for me to say on Mastodon.

I wanted to play a game.
The console game i was going to play requires a 160Gb download.
The computer game I found the installer for requires me to run a Windows 98 VM on my mac.

Which one will I be able to play first?

Screenshot of Mac folder structure Best of Entertainment Installer Disk 1 containing lots of old windows installer files.

@mattgrayyes My way of playing BOWEP is dosbox + windows 3.11

@BrodieOnLinux I think "just let certain apps listen to certain keys" is absolutely the right way to do global shortcuts. It requires the apps to change nothing (and lets be real, a lot of apps are running in wine or xwayland, and are never going to implement a wayland protocol).
I also don't want my WM eating inputs, claiming that they are for a global keybind. If my PTT button is "control", i don't want it ONLY passed as a shortcut. I want it to behave normally, but also Discord can listen
