reminded of one of the many reasons my partner is amazing: at the first american all tomorrow's parties in 2008, she beat in a few hands of poker (& actually won some $$) at the all-night table without knowing who he was or that he was a professional world series of poker player. she says he was... poker-faced.

5/6/84 eugene: 1st HELL IN A BUCKET show opener, becoming its usual slot in ’85. tight soaring CASSIDY. 63-minute PLAYING IN THE BAND > CHINA DOLL > DRUMZ > SPACE > TRUCKIN’ > SPOONFUL > BLACK PETER > AROUND & AROUND > PLAYING IN THE BAND. brief PLAYING, one drummer flying free, one drummer tethered to hi-hat. well-controlled CHINA DOLL. SPACE kawing/vocalizing with full-spectrum mixing fun by healy. loses its chaotic coherence as they tilt towards blooze. abrupt shift back to PLAYING. [2/3]

@mrcompletely a little more expensive. spring tour seems like it was $10.50-$13.50. the rex benefits in san rafael in march were $25.

@mrcompletely and looks like the mezz tickets were reserved. but i bet heads found a way.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely there's seat info over on the left of that ticket. in the expanded masto view it's blocked by the alt text stuff!

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely kinda curious if these were actually benefits or just pricier cuz of the super nice venue. it's remembered as a benefit in one of those comments, but not mentioned in any of the ads or listings that i've seen. EDIT - muddying things further, the SEVA benefit in june (with The Band, even) was back at the more affordable $13.

- had i been buying LPs in 1967 & only had debut albums to go by, there's a very good chance that country joe & the fish might've been my favorite band, at least at first. way sharper, weirder, & more outwardly than the first albums by the dead, airplane, quicksilver, etc. (though "surrealistic pillow" came out before it). should probably revisit their earlier EPs. @vinylrecords @Corry342

"ohio" returned to neil young's setlist yesterday at (the solo electric heavy af version), presumably because it was the anniversary of when government representatives slaughtered peaceful protestors (& bystanders) at , but really hope he keeps playing it this tour. seems... topical. https://sugarmtn.org/sm_show.php?show=202405040

@mrcompletely i've only really clicked with them in the past 10 years maybe. i remember seeing their name in a few jam trend pieces in the early '90s, but (now that i've vibed with it some) i'm actually amazed that they're not remotely part of the jammy canon even though people like gary lambert & @Corry342 (hi, hello!) were way into them (& gary even managed them for a bit later on). seems so adjacent, almost literally, to the non-nyc jam scenes of the '80s. maybe terry's anti taping stance?

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @Corry342 there's such a fun lightness to it that puts it on a different family tree than so much other rock in that era. hadn't thought about the retro aspect but maybe they got lumped somewhat into the cracks of the long '60s tail, closer to the band/bobby charles/post-folk-rock circuit?

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @mmahaffie @Corry342 yeah, i guess basically they just fall on the roots side of the rootsy/jammy line. funny that they pulled in so many other kinds of heads as hardcores. besides the others mentioned, the 3 people i know most committed to nrbq (besides g. lambert) are the members of yo la tengo.

had an amazing time at our local sphere last eve, totally get the hype! soul-rattling drone thunder by isaiah from earthless, 2 formed/formless sets by garcia peoples (with sub drummer), drifting vibraphone, balcony synth by kendraplex, invocation by erik davis, film by arik roper, the return of bubba's lights, etc. also, a spontaneous opening prayer, when a woman named river harmonized to the field recording i was playing of san francisco fog horns. @bourgwick @FateMusic @mrcompletely @dminches

This seems like the outcome here:

  • Jerrybase is NOT introducing any new "song" to represent the D/S section of the show.

  • @InstituteJerry thinks the way that section of the show is not coded correctly since variations are often not listed. But no one liked this suggested solution, so he is going to roll up a wooler and get over it.

Thanks for your input on the subject. :stealie:

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @InstituteJerry @FateMusic @dminches in the long term, i definitely support more precision/granularity rather than less. i'll start with 2 spaceless exceptions that could be updated: 7/28/82 goes right from drumz into the spanish jam, 8/29/82 goes right from drumz into not fade away.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @InstituteJerry @FateMusic @dminches checking my listening notes, '81 shows with no space, it happened a lot! - 2/26, 3/3, 3/14, 3/23, 3/28, 5/4, 5/6, 5/22, 7/13, 8/15, 9/12, 9/26

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@InstituteJerry @mrcompletely @FateMusic @dminches my impression is that hart plays at points during the vast majority of space segments in the early '80s, usually hanging for a bit after garcia returns.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@InstituteJerry @mrcompletely @FateMusic @dminches from a data point of view, complicated/annoying af. but from a musical perspective, way fascinating (to me, anyway!) & exactly why i'm going through tape by tape. might take a bit, but it'll get there!

OK Heads, here is a question for you.
https://jerrybase.com/events/19721227-01 the first image --> Does that look like David Grisman sitting right at the bottom of the pic? I really and truly think it does. @bourgwick and anyone else - thoughts? (photo credit: Dave Tamarkin)

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@FateMusic @Corry342 i thought that was just a name he used on records, did he actually introduce himself with it, have it on his license & use it in day to day life, etc.? not that you apparently needed a last name or ID to be on the lion's share guest list.
