up today, the good ol’ -cast gets into “unbroken chain” & it’s 2-hour a symphonic blowout! we explore the multi-tracks & get deep into the life of poet/lyricist bobby petersen, who wrote 1 song with phil lesh in the ‘60s, 2 in the ‘70s, & 1 in the ‘80s. in addition to many other heady guests: a visit from animal collective's avey tare, on sampling "unbroken chain" a few years back. https://www.dead.net/deadcast/mars-hotel-50-unbroken-chain /1

- @SunRaUniverse at montreux, july '76. coincidentally, almost exactly concurrent with the previous don cherry session. but, maybe not coincidentally, also near the end of the arkestra's furthest-out period, before they headed for more inside orbits. not inside yet, though. sprawling full-spectrum 20+ member 2-drummer ensemble arrangements blowing apart & back again, led by sunny's powerful (& wonderfully recorded) & noisy starstuff . @vinylrecords

- the last (known) session of don cherry's organic music ensemble period before cherry returned to the states, toured with lou reed, & returned to slightly more inside/outside sounds. recorded in italy, summer '76, with an om-ing/droning quartet featuring genius brazilian percussionist nana vasconcelos, guitarist gian piero pramaggiore, & moki cherry on tanpura. https://blacksweat.bandcamp.com/album/om-shanti-om @vinylrecords

immersive sonic magick with a flowing 1-hour set by setting on last night's frow show, like an appalachian version of the necks (as someone else put it), plus many other strains of wonderment, via the @WFMU archive. https://bit.ly/3Qg5Mxu

Room full of gear, including keyboards, drums, harmonium
harmonium and synth set up

@mrcompletely @WFMU very much same! and this set is already into the next phase from the album zones (& even the bandcamp live set) with new instruments/voices in the mix. sounds like they're committed, lots planned.

40 years ago tonight, the #GratefulDead open their last shows in new haven. spring ’84, show #14. soundboard: https://archive.org/details/gd1984-04-23.sbd.walker-scotton.miller.32536.sbeok.flac16 [1/3]

4/23/84 new haven: 1st set is barely 45 minutes. 14-minute SUGAREE glows in places. weir watch: slide guitar & whammy bar supplanted this set (& this tour, mostly) by harmonizing pedal, a vast improvement! no blues/C&W tunes helps, too. 88-minute LOST SAILOR > SAINT OF CIRCUMSTANCE > UNCLE JOHN’S BAND > ONLY A FOOL > DRUMZ > SPACE > SPANISH JAM > TRUCKIN’ > BLACK PETER > AROUND & AROUND > GOOD LOVIN’ is rough around the edges but has fascinating turns. garcia unspools SAINT OF CIRCUMSTANCE into UNCLE JOHN’S & keeps at UNCLE JOHN’S with long middle & exploratory coda. after garcia/weir/lesh split, mydland & drummers debut ONLY A FOOL (pissing lesh off, per scene report), its only performance. oddly, more appealing to me than DON’T NEED LOVE (almost Band-like keys groove?). satisfying extended SPACE wilding, garcialogue matched by stereo weir/keys & chaos-retaining SPANISH JAM with sweet soaring garcia tone. @tor_haxson this is definitely peak jerry/phil/weir-leave-and-brent-sings, which i don't think is what happened later.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @tor_haxson yeah, the garcia/mydland bromance definitely hasn't kicked in yet, at least in any audible way, almost the opposite with garcia's early exits.

unless i'm missing something, it's somehow still not possible to actually check the alt-text in @ivory? (yeah, yeah, it's still on the multi-year "road map" several years into the project.) kind of a drag. besides accessibility, adding additional info in the alt-text has become a norm, ala @nedraggett's great review of last night's matmos show that i just boosted, which i had to switch to a different app to read.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@ivory still missing something! at left is what a post looks like. at right is what happens when i single tap the image. please advise on specifically where i'm supposed to click to toggle.

what happens when I single tap

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@ivory when i do that it just gets smaller & retracts back to the version on the left.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@ivory and yet that is exactly what happens i tap. definitely not doing anything resembling swiping.

#NowReading - adored every damn page of steve waksman's "this ain't the summer of love," broadly about the unceasing #metal / #punk / #underground collision, but beautifully granular, connecting micro-scenes to #musicology. it equally brought alive conversations i know about in detail (punk), ones i don't (metal), & made me thirsty to read more #zines, listen to more #music, etc.. combined with his masterful "live music in america," i now wanna read everything waksman has written. @bookstodon

4/20/74 pilgrimage theatre: a step up in complexity, but less chemistry & tightness as old & in the way (or later grisman bands), which is weirdly unsettling at first. garcia mostly hangs back, not a lot of soloing. debuts of grisman’s DAWG’S BULL & show-stopping DAWG’S RAG, hot including SWEET GEORGIA BROWN & django reinhardt’s SWING ’42, guitarist david nichtern’s MY PLASTIC BANANA IS NOT STUPID & I’LL BE A GAMBLER IF YOU DEAL THE CARDS.
