Wrapping up the v1.0 of an internal product hand-crafted from the ground up on my own...

It's kind of cool but also really scary. I have to show it to the department director this afternoon and I feel like yesterday and this morning has just been staring at the code, trying to figure out whether I made any mistakes, whether it's ready to deploy, what bugs are going to be found almost immediately..etc

@brandon@fosstodon.org avatar

@ninja Heheh that's true! Plus I just demoed it to my direct colleagues and they're thrilled with the design and function! :D So that's given me quite the confidence boost!

I find it odd that it's difficult to find light bulbs for home use higher than 1500 lumens. As well I find it weird that 800 lumens seems to be the standard.

Like, I need more LIGHT when I'm working.

Any tips? Checked two local hardware stores already

Reddit was briefly down earlier today. No fix was mentioned, potentially a DDoS?

Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/

@christianselig It's a goddamn shame what they've done and I hope that you've got other sources of revenue to supplant your income.

That being said, what about repurposing Apollo for Lemmy?

There are currently 137 active wildfires here in the province of Québec. This is a brutal wildfire season, and will likely be the worst season on record by the time things are settled down.

But y'know, climate change isn't real, right?

TFW you get shat on for speaking English in a French-speaking province, then shat on for speaking French because your French isn't good enough.

Catch 22? Sorry, dilemme insoluble!

I cannot get enough of this.

@kai that is a beautiful bike lane! I don’t think there’s the same kind of beauty in roads for cars? Like are there car lovers that legitimately think a roadway is “gorgeous”?

It also turns out that SpaceHey is one KB smaller than my website. At least the front page is.

@btp You mean smaller?

@TheTuzu Judging by the way that they've reinserted widgets into Windows 11, I think that Microsoft is also confused about Windows features

@kai honestly it’s a balance between saying it so early that the question is refused entirely and saying it so late that the other person already asked the question :p

You can scream and shout and moan and judge all you want, but if the proprietary alternative is by far easier to use to get the same results, you won't get most people to switch.

It's quite a high bar, but that's a consequence of the tendency towards the path of least resistance.

Genuinely interested if there are cases where this hasn't held true.

If you say any Linux distro, you lose. Those are easier for some to use. Not technically, but ideologically.

brandon,
@brandon@fosstodon.org avatar

@msprout So in a sense, Inkscape is easier to use?

bobulous, to rust
@bobulous@fosstodon.org avatar

Now I'm looking for some syntactic sugar in . At the moment I have this method signature:

pub fn assert_ratio_tolerance<T: TryInto<Decimal>>(expected: T, actual: T, tolerance: T) where <T as TryInto<Decimal>>::Error: Debug

and I'm hoping there's some way of creating a type alias, let's call it DebugDec, so that the method can be:

pub fn assert_ratio_tolerance<T: DebugDec, U: DebugDec, V: DebugDec>(expected: T, actual: U, tolerance: V)

Does Rust offer a way to create such an alias?

brandon,
@brandon@fosstodon.org avatar

@bobulous

https://doc.rust-lang.org/reference/items/type-aliases.html

Is this what you're looking for?

type DebugDec<T> = <T as TryInto<Decimal>>::Error where T: Debug;

pub fn assert_ratio_tolerance<T: DebugDec<T>, U: DebugDec<U>, V: DebugDec<V>>(expected: T, actual: U, tolerance: V) {
// Function body
}

brandon,
@brandon@fosstodon.org avatar

@bobulous I'll be honest, I ChatGPT'd it, I'm sorry :S
